  • Field emitter arrays (FEAs) were developed using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electron emission sources. The CNTs were grown using a selective-positioning technique with a resist-protection layer. The light emission properties were studied through the electron emission of the CNTs on patterned islands, which were modulated with island diameter and spacing. The electron emission of CNT arrays with $5{\mu}m$ diameters and $10{\mu}m$ heights increased with increased spacing (from $10{\mu}m$ to $40{\mu}m$). The electron emission current of the $40-{\mu}m$-island-spacing sample showed a current density of 1.33 mA/$cm^2$ at E = 11 V/${\mu}m$, and a turn-on field of 7 V/${\mu}m$ at $1{\mu}A$ emission current. Uniform electron emission current and light emission were achieved with $40{\mu}m$ island spacing and $5{\mu}m$ island diameter.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to examine frame ratio of text information and font size in the circle smartwatch. Background: Recently, electronic manufacturers try to develop the original metaphor of traditional wrist watch (circle) in terms of smartwatch. They endeavor to break the square display in order to improve emotional customer satisfaction. Method: The experiments examined twenty level of text information design, combinations of four frame ratios (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, 21:9) and five font sizes (6pt, 7pt, 8pt, 9pt, 10pt). Nineteen participants volunteered for the experiment. Dependent variables were WPM (Words per Minute), reading preference, design preference and total preference. Furthermore, small circle display was made by using circle display data (1.3inch), which was exhibited in IFA (International Funkausstellung) 2014. Results: As a result, ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) revealed that WPM, and task time preference affect the specific frame ratio and font size. Results of ANOVA for reading preference, design preference, total preference were grouped by post-analysis LSD (Least Significant Difference). Among users, display ratio (16:9, 21:9), and font size (9pt) were preferred. In conclusion, 16:9 display ratio and 9pt are adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display. Conclusion: From the study, it is shown that 16:9 display ratio and 9pt size are more adaptable for text information in 1.3inch circle display than others. It is mainly due to the fact that the order of frame ratio and font size may affect the usability of reading long text information in a small circle display. Therefore, when developers design a circle display, the square frame ratio and font size are required to be considered according to circle size. Application: The 16:9 display ratio and 9pt font size may be utilized as a text information frame in the circle display design guideline for smartwatch.

  • We demonstrated that the threshold voltage shift owing to a gate-bias stress is originated from the trapped charges at the interface between semiconductor layer and dielectric layer, and such drawback can be settled by applying long-term delay time to the gate electrode.

  • We demonstrate novel soft-lithographic techniques for preparing patterned liquid crystal (LC) orientations at an alignment layer. By controlling patterning conditions such as wetting property and operating temperature depending on polymeric materials, multi-directional or modified LC alignment conditions can be simply achieved.

  • We propose a wheel screen type Lamina 3D display, which realizes a 3D image that can satisfy the accommodation cue by projecting volumetric images encoded by varying polarization states to a multilayered screen. The proposed system is composed of two parts: an encoding part that converts depth information to states of polarization and a decoding part that projects depth images to the corresponded diffusing layer. Though the basic principle of Lamina displays has already been verified by previous studies, those schemes suffered from a bottleneck of inferior resolution of the 3D image due to the blurring on the surfaces of diffusing layers in the stacked volume. In this paper, we propose a new structure to implement the decoding part by adopting a form of the wheel screen. Experimental verification is also provided to support the proposed principle.

  • In this paper, a new precharging method without any side effects is proposed to overcome image degradation caused by insufficient charging times. This work explains why the precharging method can compensate for short charging times. However, side effects of the precharging method in the form of horizontal line artifacts are addressed, wherein line artifact-compensating precharging (LCP) is presented to mitigate the side effects. Behavioral modeling is employed to investigate the side effects by estimating transient responses of a liquid crystal display. The LCP proves that it can dramatically reduce line artifacts caused by precharging because the brightness difference of adjacent pixels does not exceed 1.0.

  • We propose a hole-filling method to solve discontinuous depth representation and to reduce the visible seams and cracks that cause the limitation of the viewing angle of the three-dimensional (3D) image in the multilayer type 3D display system. The occlusion and the disocclusion regions between layers, such as the visible seams and cracks, are a major bottleneck of the multilayer type 3D display system to represent a volumetric 3D image by stacking multiple images. As a result, in the reconstructed 3D image, the visible seams and cracks appear as brighter overlapping and undesirable cut-off. In order to resolve the problems above, we applied the depth-fused effect to the sub-depth map generating algorithm and improve the viewing characteristics of the multilayer type 3D display. The experimental demonstrations are also provided to verify the proposed scheme.

  • Wearable device, next generation smart device, is consistently growing. The flexible display will be a kind of display in the wearable device. The flexible display technology is now evolving with end-user requirement such as portability and easy installation. Previous wearable display products still have some difficulties in manufacturing and in flexibility whole device. But it can be a flexible display with LED device and utilized in commercial area. In this paper, we propose a driver to control the LED display and implement a flexible LED display system.

  • The electrical and the optical properties of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), with and without various kinds of multiple heterostructures were investigated. The efficiency in green OLEDs were significantly enhanced by the structure of the multiple heterostructures acting as a hole transport layer (HTL) rather than by the number of periods. These results indicate that highly efficient green OLEDs utilizing multiple heterostructures acting as a HTL can be fabricated.

  • We have fabricated solution-processed zinc-tin oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) and simple circuits on glass substrates. We report a solutionprocessed zinc-tin oxide TFTs on silicon wafer with mobility greater than 9 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ (W/L = 100/5 ${\mu}m$) and threshold voltage variation of less than 1 V after bias-stressing. Also, we fabricated solution-processed zinc-tin oxide circuits including inverters and 7-stage ring oscillators fabricated on glass substrates using the developed zinc-tin oxide TFTs.
