In this paper, we propose a method to interpolate two images obtained from two parallel cameras. The proposed method uses BDM(Bidirectional Disparity Map) to prevent hole generation due to occlusion. Furthermore, we use the block-based DM(Disparity Map) to decrease the amount of computation, and also use the adaptive block size to minimize the error of the block-based DM.

In this paper, to extract object regions in stereo image, we propose an enhanced algorithm that extracts objects combining both of brightness information and disparity information. The approach that extracts objects using both has been studied by Ping and Chaohui. In their algorithm, the segmentation for an input image is carried out using the brightness, and integration of segmented regions in consideration of disparity information within the previously segmented regions. In the regions where the brightness values between object regions and background regions are similar, however, the segmented regions probably include both of object regions and background regions. It may cause incorrect object extraction in the merging process executed in the unit of the segmented region. To solve this problem, in proposed method, we adopt the merging process which is performed in pixel unit. In addition, we perform the bi-directional stereo matching process to enhance reliability of the disparity information and supplement the disparity information resulted from a single directional matching process. Further searching for disparity is decided by edge information of the input image. The proposed method gives good performance in the object extraction since we find the disparity information that is not extracted in the traditional methods. Finally, we evaluate our method by experiments for the pictures acquired from a real stereoscopic camera.
This paper proposes a conditional replenishment algorithm (CRA) to improve the visual quality (where spatial resolutions of the left and right views are mismatched) of a hybrid stereoscopic 3DTV that is based on the ATSC-M/H standard. So as to generate an enhanced view, the CRA is to choose the better substitute among a disparity-compensated view with high quality and a simply interpolated view. The CRA generates a disparity map that includes modes and disparity vectors as additional information. It also employs a quad-tree structure with variable block size by considering the spatial correlation of disparity vectors. In addition, it takes advantage of the disparity map used in a previous frame to keep the amount of additional information as small as possible. The simulation results show that the proposed CRA can successfully improve the peak signal-to-noise ratio of a poor-quality view and consequently have a positive effect on the subjective quality of the resulting 3D view.

The detection of free spaces between obstacles in a scene is a prerequisite for navigation of a mobile robot. Especially for stereo vision-based navigation, the problem of correspondence between two images is well known to be of crucial importance. This paper describes multi-range approach of area-based stereo matching for grid mapping and visual navigation in uncertain environment. Camera calibration parameters are optimized by evolutionary algorithm for successful stereo matching. To obtain reliable disparity information from both images, stereo images are to be decomposed into three pairs of images with different resolution based on measurement of disparities. The advantage of multi-range approach is that we can get more reliable disparity in each defined range because disparities from high resolution image are used for farther object a while disparities from low resolution images are used for close objects. The reliable disparity map is combined through post-processing for rejecting incorrect disparity information from each disparity map. The real distance from a disparity image is converted into an occupancy grid representation of a mobile robot. We have investigated the possibility of multi-range approach for the detection of obstacles and visual mapping through various experiments.
In this paper, we proposed muli-dimensional feature vector matching method combined with disparity smoothness constraint. The smoothness constraint was calculated using the difference between disparity of center pixel and those of 4-neighbor pixels. By applying proposed algorithm to IKONOS satellite stereo imagery, we obtained robust stereo matching result in urban areas.
For efficient transmission of 3DTV video signals, it is necessary to eliminate the inherent redundancy between the stereo image pairs. Though disparity estimation provides a powerful tool for eliminating the redundancy, it is very time consuming. This paper presents a novel disparity estimation scheme based on the human visual property. The disparity vectors of image blocks spatially adjacent to the current block are used as initial guesses fur the disparity vector of the current block. In addition, mixed-resolution coding is applied to reduce the computational complexity of disparity estimation. Through computer simulations on a stereoscopic sequence we show that the proposed method gives rise .to visually pleasing results with much reduced computational complexity.
Stereo matching algorithm is usually used to obtain a disparity map from a pair of images. However, the disparity map obtained by using stereo matching contains lots of noise and error regions. In this paper, we propose a virtual-view synthesis algorithm using disparity refinement in order to improve the quality of the synthesized image. First, the error region is detected by examining the consistency of the disparity maps. Then, motion information is acquired by applying optical flow to texture component of the image in order to improve the performance. Then, the occlusion region is found using optical flow on the texture component of the image in order to improve the performance of the optical flow. The refined disparity map is finally used for the synthesis of the virtual view image. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the quality of the generated virtual-view.
In this paper, we describe an algorithm to automatically generate an intermediate scene using the bidirectional disparity morphing from the parallel stereopair. To compute the disparity between two reference images, we use the 2-step fast block matching algorithm that restricts the searching range and accelerates the speed of the computation of the disparity. We also define three occluding patterns so as to smooth the computed disparities, especially for occluded regions. They are derived from the peculiar properties of the disparity map. The smoothed disparity maps present that the false disparities are well corrected and the boundary between foreground and background becomes sharper. We discuss the advantages of this algorithm compared to the commonly used schemes and we show some experimental results with real data.
In this paper, an effective method for reconstruction of stereoscopic image pair through the regularized adaptive disparity estimation is proposed. Although the conventional adaptive disparity window matching can sharply improve the PSNR of a reconstructed stereo image, but there still exist some problems of overlapping between the matching windows and disallocation of the matching windows, because the size of the matching window tend to changes adaptively in accordance with the magnitude of the feature values. In the proposed method, the problems relating to the conventional adaptive disparity estimation scheme can be solved and the predicted stereo image can be more effectively reconstructed by regularizing the extimated disparity vector with the neighboring disparity vectors. From the experimental results, it is found that the proposed algorithm show improvements the PSNR of the reconstructed right image by about 2.36${\sim}$2.76 dB, on average, compared with that of conventional algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a new stereo matching algorithm by using color information especially for stereo images containing human beings in the applications such as tele-presence system. In the proposed algorithm, we first remove the background regions by using a threshold value for stereo images obtained by stereo camera and then find an initial disparity map and segment a given image into R, G, B and white color components. We also obtain edges in the segmented image and estimate the disparity from the extract boundary regions. Finally, we generate the final disparity map by properly combining the disparity map of each color component. Experiment results show better performance compared with the window based method and the dynamic programing method especially for stereo images with human being.
