  • The eight types of Korean bibliographic information of biology and life science are included in PubMed that serves universal medical bibliographic information. Other domestic bibliographic information are served on its own format at different organizations. To fulfill the CCBB homepage user's request that it is necessary that integration of bibliographic service for quick acquisition of research information, we intends to construct metadata registry and service about bibliographic information of biology and life science. This paper describes the design and implementation of bibliographic information network prototype for biology and life science that can be used to share latest research result, seminar presentation data, research note, and research paper etc as well as to exchange information between researchers through Open Archiving Community.

  • 1. Objectives: In order to classify an individual into four constitution type, an oriental medical doctor utilizes various information such as face, pulse, voice, and questionnaire. When only one type of information is used, one's constitution may not be decided correctly. 2. Methods: In this paper, we propose a novel four constitution types classifier using facial images which classifies subjects into indecision group as well as Taeumin, Soeumin, and Soyangin. 3. Results: Experimental results show that it increases the classification rate though the decision rate is rather decreased, which is more effective and reliable than conventional classifiers without indecision. 4. Conclusion: For the effective classification, we have found that it is more useful to add an indecision group which requires more information to be properly classified into one constitution type.

  • Introduced were two biological investigations in which information biology played a significant role. In the first case independent findings in cancer research over a long period were united and organized by information biology and led to the outcome that was subject to a Nobel Prize. The outcome has revealed that the cause of human cancer is located in the genome in a dormant condition. The second case shows how to elucidate the function of an unknown DNA sequence or ORF in prokaryotes by a large - scale computer homology search and analyses. For the elucidation the International DNA Databases and a large - scale computer were two key factors.

  • Birth and development of information biology are introduced with its definition and scientific basis. The discipline lives on the two types of nutrition, one is a huge amount of biological data on genomes, gene expressions, proteomes, protein 3D structures, protein networks, and so forth. The other is the method of using them on a computer. The scientific basis of the two is evolution. To collect genome and gene expression data form laboratories in the world, annotate and dissimilate back to researchers worldwide, they built the EMBL database in Europe in 1982, GenBank in USA in 1984 and DNA Data Bank of Japan in 1987. On the other hand, the methods of using and analyzing those data have accordingly been developed. The two aspects advance the discipline further and further.

  • Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) play important roles in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling during ovarian follicular development, oocytes development and ovulation. In an attempt to investigate the effect of MMP activation in development cumulus-oocytes complexes, we examined the localization and expression of MMP, and monitored MMP expression profile. Cumulus-oocytes complexes were collected and matured in vitro for 24 hr, 36 hr and 48 hr. A mRNA expression of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-2 and TIMP-3 was detected in all culture medium regardless of CC, DC and CDCs. Activity of MMP-2 in the DC progressively was increased from 24 hr to 48 hr. But MMP-9 was not detected in all culture medium. The localization of MMP-2 was also measured by immunohistochemistry analysis. The MMP-2 and TIMP-2 was detected in cumulus cell and oocyte zone pellucida. Expression of MMP-2 protein in the COCs was progressively increased from 24 hr to 48 hr. However, MMP-9 protein was progressively decreased from 24 hr to 48 hr. And TIMP-2 protein was most highly expressed in the CDCs 36 hr. Expression of TIMP-3 protein in the CDCs was progressively increased from 24 hr to 48 hr. In conclusion, these results suggest that MMP-2 plays a role in maintaining normal maturation and development by controlling the ECM inhibitor concentration on cumulus cell and oocytes.

  • Targeted degradation of proteins through ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis is an important control mechanism in various cellular processes. The process of ubiquitin conjugation is achieved by three enzyme complexes, among which the ubiquitin ligase complex (E3) is in charge of substrate specificity. The SCF (SKP1-CUL1-F-box) family portrays the largest and the most characterized member of the E3 ligases. For each SCF complex, the ubiquitination target is recognized by the F-box protein subunit, which interacts with the substrate through a unique C-terminal domain. We have characterized a novel F-box protein CFL-1 that represents a single LRR-type F-box (FBXL) in the Caenorhabditis elegans genome. CFL-1 is highly homologous to FBXL20 and FBXL2 of mammals, which are known to regulate synaptic vesicle release and cell cycle, respectively. A green fluorescence protein (GFP)-reporter gene fused to the cfl-1 promoter showed restricted expression around the amphid and the anus. Modulation of CFL-1 activity by RNAi affected the time interval between defecations. RNAi-treated worms also exhibited reduced tendency to form dauer when exposed to daumone. The potential involvement of CFL-1 in the control of defecation and pheromone response adds to the ever expanding list of cellular processes controlled by ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis in C. elegans. We suggest that CFL-1, as a single LRR-type F-box protein in C. elegans, may portray a prototype gene exerting diverse functions that are allocated among multiple FBXLs in higher organisms.
