The objective of this study is to propose and evaluate the BAYES-ESP, which is a dam inflow prediction method based on Ensemble Streamflow Prediction method (ESP) and Bayesian theory. ABCD rainfall-runoff model was used to predict monthly dam inflow. Monthly meteorological data collected from KMA, MOLIT and K-water and dam inflow data collected from K-water were used for the model calibration and verification. To estimate the performance of ABCD model, ESP and BAYES-ESP method, time series analysis and skill score (SS) during 1986~2015 were used. In time series analysis monthly ESP dam inflow prediction values were nearly similar for every years, particularly less accurate in wet and dry years. The proposed BAYES-ESP improved the performance of ESP, especially in wet year. The SS was used for quantitative analysis of monthly mean of observed dam inflows, predicted values from ESP and BAYES-ESP. The results indicated that the SS values of ESP were relatively high in January, February and March but negative values in the other months. It also showed that the BAYES-ESP improved ESP when the values from ESP and observation have a relatively apparent linear relationship. We concluded that the existing ESP method has a limitation to predict dam inflow in Korea due to the seasonality of precipitation pattern and the proposed BAYES-ESP is meaningful for improving dam inflow prediction accuracy of ESP.
This study investigates turbulent flow around a square cylinder mounted on a flat surface at high Reynolds number using a large-eddy simulation (LES) model, particularly focusing on vortex streets behind the square cylinder. Total 9 simulation cases with different inflow wind directions, inflow wind speeds, and cylinder widths in the x- and y-directions are considered to examine the effects of inflow wind direction, speed, and cylinder widths on turbulent flow and vortex streets. In the control case, the inflow wind parallel to the x-direction has a maximum speed of $5m\;s^{-1}$ and the width and height of the cylinder are 50 m and 200 m, respectively. In all cases, down-drafts in front of the cylinder and updrafts, wakes, and vortex streets behind the cylinder appear. Low-speed flow below the cylinder height and high-speed flow above it are mixed behind the cylinder, resulting in strong negative vertical turbulent momentum flux at the boundary. Accordingly, the magnitude of the vertical turbulent momentum flux is the largest near the cylinder top. In the case of an inflow wind direction of $45^{\circ}$, the height of the boundary is lower than in other cases. As the inflow wind speed increases, the magnitude of the peak in the vertical profile of mean turbulent momentum flux increases due to the increase in speed difference between the low-speed and high-speed flows. As the cylinder width in the y-direction increases, the height of the boundary increases due to the enhanced updrafts near the top of the cylinder. In addition, the magnitude of the peak of the mean turbulent momentum flux increases because the low-speed flow region expands. Spectral analysis shows that the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency in the control case is 0.2 and that the cylinder width in the y-direction and the inflow wind direction affect the non-dimensional vortex generation frequency. The non-dimensional vortex generation frequency increases as the projected width of the cylinder normal to the inflow direction increases.

After treatment with imidacloprid, there were clear differences in the time to the first reaction of Myzus persicae among the concentrations treated. The time taken for the proboscis of the aphids to penetrate, during the recording plants increased as the imidacloprid concentration increased. Imidacloprid concentration inflow into a leaf was investigated using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the residues of the imidacloprid varied slightly with the different concentrations treated. However, the inflow rates of this insecticide into a leaf increased as the dipping times increased. Furthermore, it was shown that there was no relationship in inflow concentration between the concentrations and times of treatment. However, the concentration in the leaf differed according to the dipping time. Judging from the fact that the first reaction behavior against imidacloprid displayed at an inflow concentration of 0.32-0.35 mg/L, we concluded that inflow concentrations causing the first reaction of the aphids to the insecticide were much lower than the concentration treated. The general feeding characteristics of the aphids indicated that xylem and/or phloem feeding behavior continued after a series of probing behaviors and stylet activity during the first 3 h from the start of EPG recording. After 90 min treatment with imidacloprid, feeding behavior over the next 30 min indicated a significant increase in the withdrawal of the stylet from the plant at all treated concentrations. Xylem and/or phloem feeding patterns were significantly decreased during this time. In particular, the proportion of xylem feeding differed according to the concentration of imidacloprid.

To prevent turbidity breakthrough in a depth filter caused by hydraulic shock loads, influence of turbidity and particle number in filtrate by variation of operating filter number depending on inflow change was investigated. Inflow quantity at the S water treatment plant (WTP) was varied and ratio of maximum/minimum inflow quantity was 2.2, therefore filtration velocity was also subsequently changed. The S WTP changed operating filter number depending on inflow variation to minimize change of filtration velocity. Particle breakthrough was not severe when operation system was changed, out-of-operation and re-start of filter was repeated depending on inflow quantity. Slight particle breakthrough was noticed when re-start of filter was implemented at the filter that had a cumulative filtration run time of less than 10 h or more than 50 h. This can be attributed to the inadequate ripening and over accumulation of particles on media. Therefore, it is more efficient to choose a re-starting filter basin which has cumulative filtration run time more than 10 h or less than 50 h to reduce particle breakthrough. Filter number variation depending on inflow change was proven to be a method for improvement of unit filter run volume (UFRV).

We estimated the global inflow and stock of plastic marine debris. In South Korea, we estimated that the annual inflow of plastic marine debris (72,956 tons) was about 1.4% of annual plastics consumption (5.2 million tons) in 2012. By applying this 1.4% ratio to global plastics production from 1950 to 2013, we estimated that 4.2 million tons of plastic debris entered the ocean in 2013 and that there is a stock of 86 million tons of plastic marine debris as of the end of 2013, assuming zero outflow. In addition, with a logistic model, if 4% of petroleum is turned into plastics, the final stock of plastic marine debris shall be 199 million tons at the end. As the inflow and the stock are different units of measurement, better indicators to assess the effectiveness of inflow-reducing policies are needed. And, as the pollution from plastic marine debris is almost irreversible, countermeasures to prevent it should be valued more, and stronger preventive measures should be taken under the precautionary principle. As this is a preliminary study based on limited information, further research is needed to clarify the tendency of inflow and stock of plastic marine debris.

The inflow estimation at large multipurpose dam reservoir is carried out by considering the water balance among the discharge, the storage change during unit time interval obtained from the observed water level near dam structure and area-volume curve. This method can be ideal for level pool reservoir but include potential errors when the inflow is influenced by the water level slope due to backwater effects from upstream flood inflows and strong wind induced by typhoon. In addition, the other uncertainties arisen from the storage reduction due to sedimentation after the dam construction and water level noise due to mechanical vibration transmitted from the electric power generator. These uncertainties impedes the accurate hydraulic inflow measurement requiring exquisite hydrometric data arrangement for reservoir waterbody. In this study, the distributed hydrologic model using UBC-3P boundary setting was applied and its feasibility was evaluated. Finally, the modeling performance has been verified since the calculated determination coefficient has been in between 0.96 to 0.99 after comparing with observed peak inflow and total inflow at Namgang dam reservoir.

The vertical shaft of a selective intake structure, which is constructed in a large reservoir, is required to be impermeable and to employ a grouting technology to prevent water inflow from the reservoir or surrounding ground. In this study, groundwater inflow is estimated using a numerical model for two cases (i.e., grouting or non-grouting cases at the exterior of a vertical shaft) and compared with data measured during an excavation at the construction site of a selective intake structure in the Soyang reservoir, Korea. Groundwater inflow is estimated to range from 444 to 754 $m^3/d$ in the case of non-grouting and from 58 to 95 $m^3/d$ in the case of grouting. The groundwater inflow measured in a vertical shaft, which ranges from 30 to 100 $m^3/d$, is similar to the simulated amount. It is recommended that before the excavation of a shaft, water inflow is estimated using a numerical model and a grouting test to ensure excavation stability and improve excavation efficiency.
The energy losses due to surcharged flow at four-way combining manhole, which is mainly installed in the downstream of urban sewer system, is the main cause of inundation in urban area. Surcharged four-way combining manholes form various flow configuration such as straight through, T-type, and four-way manholes depending on variation of inflow discharge in inlet pipes. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze change of energy loss and estimate head loss coefficients at surcharged four-way combining manhole with variation of inflow discharge ratio. The hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change inflow ratios were installed to analyze the flow characteristics at four-way combining manhole. In this study, to calculate the head loss coefficient according to change of the inflow discharge ratios at the surcharged four-way combining square manhole, the discharge conditions of 40 cases which the inflow ratios of each inlet pipe were changed by 10% interval was selected. The head loss coefficient at surcharged square manhole showed the lowest value of 0.40 at the straight manhole and the highest value of 1.58 at the $90^{\circ}$ junction manhole. In the combining manholes (T-type and four-way), the head loss coefficients were calculated more higher as the lateral flow rate was biased. The contour map of head loss coefficient range was constructed by using the estimated head loss coefficients and the empirical formula of head loss coefficients was derived to consider the variation of inflow discharge ratios at the surcharged square manhole. The empirical formula could be applied to the design and assessment of the urban drainage system.

This paper aims to evaluate the applicability of dam inflow prediction model using recurrent neural network theory. To achieve this goal, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model and the Elman Recurrent Neural Network(RNN) model were applied to hydro-meteorological data sets for the Soyanggang dam and the Chungju dam basin during dam operation period. For the model training, inflow, rainfall, temperature, sunshine duration, wind speed were used as input data and daily inflow of dam for 10 days were used for output data. The verification was carried out through dam inflow prediction between July, 2016 and June, 2018. The results showed that there was no significant difference in prediction performance between ANN model and the Elman RNN model in the Soyanggang dam basin but the prediction results of the Elman RNN model are comparatively superior to those of the ANN model in the Chungju dam basin. Consequently, the Elman RNN prediction performance is expected to be similar to or better than the ANN model. The prediction performance of Elman RNN was notable during the low dam inflow period. The performance of the multiple hidden layer structure of Elman RNN looks more effective in prediction than that of a single hidden layer structure.

The restoration of the Nakdong River estuary is one of the most important projects of the Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea. A real-scale experiment of gate operation was executed from 2019 to 2020, and a pilot operation was performed in 2021. The gate of Nakdong River Estuary Barrier (NEB) is supposed to be continuously opened based on the experiment results. Many critical decisions should be made immediately during the experiment based on the real-time measured data and numerical analysis considering the seawater inflows. The decision-making sequence was made systematically with the accurate estimation of seawater inflow. The estimation of seawater inflow is the main research objective and the equations of seawater inflow were developed, reflecting the structural characteristics of NEB. The inflow equations were developed in two forms, overflow and underflow. ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) was used to measure seawater inflow, check the accuracy of the developed equations, and derive the flow coefficient. The comparison error of the developed equations was about 3% compared to the measured data.
