The present study was aimed to produce a chicken polyclonal antibody against Cronobacter muytjensii and to develop an immunoassay for its detection. Purification of anti-C. muytjensii IgY from egg yolk was accomplished using various methods such as water dilution and salt precipitation. As a result, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis produced two bands around 30 and 66 kDa, corresponding to a light and a heavy chain, respectively. Indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IC-ELISA) was performed to determine the effectiveness of the chicken IgY against C. muytjensii. The optimum conditions for detecting C. muytjensii by indirect ELISA and checkerboard titration of the antigen revealed an optimum average absorbance at the concentration of 18 ${\mu}g/mL$, having ca. $10^8$ coated cells per well. The anti-C. muytjensii IgY antibody had high specificity for C. muytjensii and low cross-reactivity with other tested pathogens. In this assay, no cross-reactivity was observed with the other genera of pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Salmonella Enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes. In addition, detection of C. muytjensii in infant formula powder showed a low matrix effect on the detection curve of IC-ELISA for C. muytjensii, with similar detection limit of $10^5$ CFU/mL as shown in standard curve. These findings demonstrate that the developed method is able to detect C. muytjensii in infant formula powder. Due to the stable antibody supply without sacrificing animals, this IgY can have wide applications for the rapid and accurate detection of C. muytjensii in dairy foods samples.

Objectives: This study compared the nutritional intakes of early and late preterm infants in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and at home. The dietary problems and the need for community care services for premature infants were further investigated. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study on 125 preterm infants and their parents (Early preterm n = 70, Late preterm n = 55). The data were collected by surveying the parents of preterm infants and from hospital medical records. Results: No significant differences were obtained between the early and late preterm infant groups when considering the proportion of feeding types in the NICU and at home. Early preterm infants were fed with a greater amount of additional calories at home and had more hours of tube feeding (P = 0.022). Most preterm infants had feeding problems. However, there was no significant difference between early and late preterm infants in the mental pain of parents, sleeping, feeding, and weaning problems at home. Many parents of preterm babies had no external support, and more than half the parents required community care to take care of their preterm babies. Conclusions: Regardless of the gestational age, most preterm infants have several problems with dietary intake. Our study indicates the need to establish community care services for preterm infants.
Selenium contents of infant formulas that were commerically available in Japan and Korean were determined by the method of atomic absorption spectrometry with hydrode generation. Total means of selenium contents were 45.2$\pm$22.1ng/g(n=34) in all the Japaneses formulas and 58.3$\pm$18.9ng/g(n=22) in all the Korean formulas. selecnium contents of milk-based formulas (54.7$\pm$23.2ng/g in Japan, n=20 and 64.8$\pm$12.6ng/g in Korean , n=18) were significantly higher than those of soy-based formulas (36.8$\pm$11.0ng/g in Japanes brands, n=11 and 36.4ng/g in Korean one , N=1). Based on selenium data of these formulas the selenium intakes of infants have been estimated to be about 6.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/day and 8.1$\mu\textrm{g}$/day in Korean by milk-based formula feeding.
Cronobacter is a major foodborne pathogen in powdered infant formula and can lead to serious developmental after-effect and death to infants. The contamination of Cronobacter may be a high risk for the powdered foods. To isolate and identify Cronobacter from the powdered foods such as powdered infant formula and Saengsik in Korea, a conventional culture method, rapid identification system, PCR, and 16S rDNA sequencing were performed. As the results of isolation, seven Cronobacter spp. were isolated from seven out of 102 powdered infant formulas and 41 Cronobacter were isolated from 41 out of 86 Saengsiks. Forty-eight Cronobacter isolates were identified to be C. sakazakii and C. dublenisis by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Most of the isolates were C. sakazakii and 13% of the isolates were C. dublinesis. One fourth of the C. sakazakii isolates showed different biochemical characteristics of negative nitrate reduction and nonmotility activities compared with the other strains reported previously.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and growth of Korean infants, who were atending peripheral community clinics in low income areas, by anthropometric measurements and estimating dietary intakes. Dietary intakes and growth were compared among different feeding patterns of 143 infants until age 9 months. The overall mean nutrient intakes of infants in this study were below the recommended allowances except the calcium intake from significant difference in each groups; however, calcium, zinc and iron intake of the formula fed infant(FF) was higher than the breast fed infant(BF) or the mixed fed infant(MF). Form ages 4-6 months, the nutrient intakes were shown to be higher in groups that were given supplementary foods than groups that were not. From ages 7-9 months, all nutrient intakes were higher in or the formula and supplementary foods fed(ESF) infants than in the breast and supplementary food(BSF) or the formula and supplementary food(FSF) groups, All subjets in this study showed a large Z-score. The growth of infants up to 6 months of age showed no significant difference in the feeding pattern, however, after 7 months of age the BSF group had significantly lower weight than the FSF or the ESF groups, There were significant positive relationships between infants weight gain at age 7-9 months from birth and the current protein or zinc intakes. As a result the average status of nutrient intakes of infants in this area was loser than the RDA, however, the growth pattern was fairly good. Although the breast milk is beneficial for infants, mothers should be educated for the importance of supplemental food and its practice to support good mutrition(Korean J Community Nutrition 3 (2) : 174-189, 1998)
Rice based infant foods of carrot, of beef, and of egg for 4-6 month old infants were prepared using freeze drying (FD) process. The optimum moisture content prior to FD and the plate temperature in the drier were determined with the use of response surface methodology. For all the infant foods under this study, FD time was longer as the initial moisture content was higher and the plate temperature was lower. Brittleness of the dried infant foods increased as the moisture content decreased and the plate temperature increased. Among the sensory attributes, hydration rate, uniformity, and smoothness were greater with increased moisture content and with decreased plate temperature. Ease to spoon increased as moisture content increased and mouthcoating increased as both the moisture content and the plate temperature increased. Optimum moisture content and plate temperature for the FD of carrot, beef and egg foods were 88.5% and $34^{\circ}C$, 88.5% and $28^{\circ}C$, and 87.3% and $39^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Three types of infant food were experimentally prepared based on the average caloric requirement for, Koreans : Formula A, with 1/3 RDA for 4-6 month, formula B, with 1/2 RDA for 7-9 month, and formula C, with 2/3 RDA for 10-12 month old infants. Into each formula was added approximately 50% of rice. Analysis of the nutritive values on these formula showed no deviance Com the expected values in case of general nutrients while the percent of essential amino acids in protein was muck higher except methionine. Since iron content was found to be below the half of except values, a sufficient amount of iron as required in RDA should be additionally supplied, for example, in iron drops. The infant preference test on each formula showed much favorable acceptability : 50% of them responded as moderate, 33.3% as favorable, 12.5% as disliking, and 4.2% as disgusting. The test also showed no noticeable change in both feces and appetite.

To compare the extent of heat treatment in domestic infant formula, pH,titratable acidity, undenatured whey protein contents, HMF contents and protein-reducing substances of three commercial products (A, B, C) were measured. The pH of B products was lowest and the titratable acidity of B product was highest. The contents of undenatured whey protein per 100ml serum were 0∼30mg(A products), 90∼130mg(B products)and 80∼90mg(C products), respectively. Distinct differences of undenatured whey protein contents according to the manufacturer and infat's stage in age could be observed. The HMF contents of tested products showed 10.9∼21.5umol/L and B-2 product(B products for the second stage of 5∼9 month) was the highest among tested products. The protein-reducing substances showed 4.46∼9.50mg K4Fe(CN)6/100ml serum nd B-2 product was the highest among tested products.
This study was conducted to survey the feeding methods in Seogypo city and south Chejukun area. A random sample for this study a total of 355 mothers having babies under the age of 3 were surveyed. were boys. 45.5% were girls. infants' colostrum intakes in Seogypo sith and south Chejukun area were 69.9% and 63.1% respectability. Nother's education level affected colostrum intakes significantly. Baby's sex birth weight and mother's job affected the infants' feeding methods. The case of girl normal birth weight and mother's employment showed high percentage of bottle feeding. Bottle feeding was higher in Seogypo small city than in south Chejugun the country. Most of reasons for bottle feeding or mixed feeding was the lack of breast milk. The highest percentage of recommenders for breast feeding were baby's mother in Seogypo city area and were baby's grandmother in south Chejugun area. In Seogypo city area mother's education level did not affect the infant's feeding methods but in south Chjukun area mother's education level affected significantly.
