A Study of the Care Giver's Perception on Weaning Foods in Atopic Dermatitis Infants (아토피 피부염 영유아 양육인의 이유식에 관한 인식 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was evaluate the perception on the relationship between feeding and atopic dermatitis of infants. The results are summarized as follows:. The feeding method of atopic dermatitis infant was composed of breast feeding 26.9%, bottle feeding 50.9%, and mixed feeding 22.2%. 95.3% of the subjects recognized mother's meal during breast feeding were transmitted to infant, but 30.8% of breast feeding restricted their foods. Weaning food was recognized as a nutritional supplement primarily. 61.5% of the subjects perceived the relation between food and atopic dermatitis and 58.8% of the subject perceived atopic dermatitis infants will be cured by growing. 39.9% of the subjects answered that special food developed and made worse atopic dermatitis in their infants. Egg, mackerel, milk, pork, chicken scored high as doubtful food related with atopic dermatitis. It is necessary to find out the food that develop atopic dermatitis symtoms and make guidelines for diet therapy for the infants with atopic dermatitis.

Study on Infant Feeding Practice in Sockcho-City (속초시 영유아의 이유실태조사)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the weaning practice of 170 infants, aged 6 to 20 months, in Sockcho city Kangwon province. Informations on the infant feeding were obtained by interviewing mothers in three different pediatric clinics located in Sockcho. In this survey 40.4% of infants were breast-fed, while 44.1% of them were bottle-fed. Among subjects 75.9% of infants began to be weaned within 6 months. Among those who finished weaning aleady, 56.7% of infants fnished weaning 11 to 13 months. Sixty percent of mothers got the nutritional knowledge on infant feeding by the aid of cook book and child care book. Fruit juice was firstly introduced as infant food. The most favorite food for infants was fruit juices which were followed by soup, and e99 Pudding. Cereals were used frequently as infant foods while meat & fish, beans and vegetables were lesser used for infants. For the improvement of nutritional states of infants. nutritional education programmes and development of infant food is needed.

  • This has been a brief overview of where infant nutrition has been, where it is, and my projection of where it's going. The purpose has been to provide an indication that in the U.S., foods are available to provide sound nutrition for infants. More remains to be done-largely in the education of parents in good feeding practice and in continued refinement and expansion of foods.

A Study on the Future Plans for Infant Feeding Practice and Its Associated Factors among University Students (대학생의 미래 모유수유계획에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the future plan for infant feeding practice and its associated factors among university students so as to develop focus for nutritional education program for the promotion of breastfeeding. The subjects were 301 students (males 130, females 171). The results obtained were as follows. In this survey, the subjects had a basic knowledge of breastfeeding and lactation, especially of the ingredient of breastmilk. However they were not well informed about the physiology and method of breastfeeding and benefits of breastfeeding for mothers. The average scores far attitude toward breastfeeding and lactation were 3.09 points on a 4 point scale, which indicated a slightly positive attitudes toward breastfeeding. However the participants had a negative attitude toward its emotional and practical aspects. Their future plan for infant feeding was breastfeeding 40.3%, formula feeding 3.0% and mixed feeding 56.7%. A concern was that the students showed a high rate with regard to a mixed feeding plan, and Dey decided this based on an incorrect knowledge of breastfeeding. The group who planned to breastfeed in the future (BF) showed higher scores with respect to knowledge and attitudes than those who planned to formula feed or mixed feed (FF + MF). Therefore, to encourage mothers to breastfeed and support breastfeeding, breastfeeding nutritional education is urgently needed among university students. In addition, nutrition education programs should promote the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and the physiology and practical method of breastfeeding. Also a practical and culturally sensitive course about food and nutrition is recommended to inform participants about breastfeeding. (Korean J Community Nutrition 8(2) : 240∼249, 2003)

Dietary Habits and Nutrient Intakes according to Feeding Method during Infant Period in Elementary School Students (충남 일부지역 초등학생의 영아기 영양법에 따른 식습관과 영양섭취상태)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine dietary habits and nutrient intakes according to feeding method during infant period in elementary school students. Subjects were 1,251 elementary school students. Subjects were divided into three groups, breast-fed group (N=508), formula-fed group (N=397), and mixed group (N=346), according to feeding method during infant period. The questionnaire was composed of general characteristics, dietary conditions during infant period, dietary behaviors, and dietary intakes and was completed by children and children's parents. Average age, height, weight, and body mass index were 11.6 years, 139.0 cm, 34.6 kg, and $17.8kg/m^2$, respectively. The formula-fed group showed a smaller proportion of subjects with colostrum feeding (P<0.001) compared to the breast-fed and mixed groups. Frequency of eating snacks was significantly higher in the mixed group than in other groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in dietary habit total score and nutrient intakes according to feeding method during infant period. Feeding method in during infant period was associated with dietary habits (milk and vegetable intake habits) up to growth period of elementary school. A longitudinal and systematic study is needed to clarify this relationship.

Effects of Breast-feeding Education and Support Services on Breast-feeding Rates and Infant's Growth (모유수유 교육 및 지지 서비스가 모유수유 실천율과 영아 성장에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of breast-feeding education and support services on rate of breast-feeding three and six months after birth, and the effect on infant's growth (weight, height, body mass index [BMI]). The experimental group which had both education and support services was compared with the control group which had only breast-feeding education. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with a time-series design. The participants were 39 mothers who were hospitalized for childbirth. Twenty mother were assigned to the experimental group and 19 mothers, to the control group. The breast feeding education was done during hospitalization, and support services were provided once a week after discharge for a month (a total 4 times) by a maternity ward nurse. Data regarding breast-feeding rate at one month after childbirth was collected by phone call; the breast-feeding rates at three and six months after childbirth were collected in a visit to the families. The child's weight and height were also measured during the visit. Results: The experimental group had a statistically significant higher rate for frequency of breast-feeding at one, three and six months after childbirth than the control group. However, there was no meaningful difference between the two groups for infant growth. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that breast-feeding education is helpful for a start, but support services are also necessary to sustain breast-feeding.

Concept Analysis of Effective Breastfeeding (효과적인 모유수유 개념 분석)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze and clarify the concept of the effective breastfeeding. Methods: This study used Walker and Avant's process of concept analysis. Results: Effective breastfeeding is how to give infant adequate milk, which fulfills needs of mother and infant, from her breast so that they can be satisfied with the process and results. It included the effective breastfeeding properties as follows: feeding behaviors (positioning, latch on, and suckling), transferring a breast milk to an infant, mother-infant interaction, and satisfying their desires (satisfaction, comfort, mother's self-confidence, infant's adequate weight gain and defecation, adequate breastfeeding interval). The antecedent of effective breastfeeding were anatomical and functional normal breast, breastfeeding knowledge and steady-state of mother, and feeding desire, rooting reflex and normal oral cavity of infant. The consequences of effective breastfeeding were exclusive breastfeeding, infant and maternal health and wellbeing, and achievement of mother and infant attachment. Conclusion: The meaning of effective breastfeeding defined in this study will contribute to develop the effectiveness breastfeeding assessment tool and the nursing intervention for ineffective breastfeeding.

An Exploration and Comparison of Infant Feeding Practices in Home and Center Contexts

  • This study compared parents' and teachers' feeding practices with young children. Parents and teachers of children aged 0-3 years were recruited at 24 child care centers to complete surveys regarding their demographic characteristics, parenting styles, and feeding practices with young children. Respondents included 106 parents and 102 teachers. Participants' feeding beliefs and values were found to be related to their parenting style classifications (i.e., Authoritative, Authoritarian, or Permissive), ethnicity, income, and other demographic characteristics. Findings indicate the need for teachers and parents to begin communicating about their longterm goals for a child's development as soon as the child enters care. Understanding the goals and variation of feeding practices used at home and at school can help teachers and parents begin to construct a shared vision for care.

Effects of Nonnutritive Sucking on Behavioral State in Preform Infants (비영양 흡철의 미숙아 행동상태에 대한 효과)

  • The purpose of study was to examine the effect of nonnutritive sucking(NNS) on behavioral state in preform infants. Fourteen infants (gestational age 28-35 weeks, M=31.86 ; birth weights 1095-2275g, M=1694g) admitted to NICU, serving as their controls were randomly administered 5 min of nonnutritive sucking and a control condition. Behavioral state was measured using the Anderson Behavioral State Scale(ABSS). Heart rates were obtained for each infant before and during NNS and bottle feeding. Data collecction was done by 3 experienced nurses in NICU 2 times a day for conseculive 4 days for each subject. Interrater reliability were .80-.90. The findings were as follows : 1. Preform infants averaged active restless states 58.93% in the prointervention phase and 27.32% in the NNS phase. Inactive awake states were 3.57% in the preintervention phase and 34.64% in the NNS phase. 2. There were significantly more positive changes to inactive awake states for the NNS intervention, Z=-2.35, p=.01. 3. There was no statistically significant difference in heart rate change between NNS intervention and control condition, z=-1.15, p=.24. 4. The rates of feeding success determined by finishing prescribed amount of milk by bottle feeding within 15 minutes were 83.94% in NNS intervention and 89.29% in control condition. The findings from this study confirmed that NNS is effective for behavioral state modulation and inducing optimal state for feeding in preform infant. The NNS intervention in nursing practice may help the transition of preform infants for nipple feeding.

The Economic Benefits of Breastfeeding (모유수유의 경제적 효과)

  • To compare the costs incurred by infant feeding between mothers who breastfed their infants and those who fed them infant formula, a questionnaire survey was carried out to 136 mothers living in Seoul, Cheongju and Chungju who breastfed and 199 mothers who formula-fed their infants. The cost of formula-feeding was estimated based on the expenditures for formula and feeding apparatus, and the time needed to wash bottles and prepare formula. The cost of breastfeeding was estimated based on the expenditures for food for the additional nutritional intake of these mothers. The mean cost of formula-feeding was ₩ 1,870,125 during the first year of the baby's life. The food cost for the additional nutritional intake of the breastfeeding mothers was ₩ 203.004 per year. The extra medical cost for respiratory illnesses in the formula-fed group compared to the breastfed group was W 62,920 because the formula-fed infants required medical attention for respiratory illnesses more often than the breast-fed infants. Therefore, breastfeeding could save ₩ 1,730,041 during the first year of an infant's life. We may have underestimated the cost savings from breastfeeding because we did not take into account the potentially decreased costs of fertility control and the health benefits for mothers. as well as the decreased usage of water and gas. Analyses showed that breastfeeding is not only nutritionally advantageous, but also economically advantageous for families and society.
