The accuracy of the 30% and SRSS rules, commonly used to estimate the combined response of structures, and some related issues, are studied. For complex systems and earthquake loading, the principal components give the maximum seismic response. Both rules underestimate the axial load by about 10% and the COV of the underestimation is about 20%. Both rules overestimate the base shear by about 10%. The uncertainty in the estimation is much larger for axial load than for base shear, and, for axial load, it is much larger for inelastic than for elastic behavior. The effect of individual components may be highly correlated, not only for normal components, but also for totally uncorrelated components. The rules are not always inaccurate for large values of correlation coefficients of the individual effects, and small values of such coefficients are not always related to an accurate estimation of the response. Only for perfectly uncorrelated harmonic excitations and elastic analysis of SDOF systems, the individual effects of the components are uncorrelated and the rules accurately estimate the combined response. In the general case, the level of underestimation or overestimation depends on the degree of correlation of the components, the type of structural system, the response parameter, the location of the structural member and the level of structural deformation. The codes should be more specific regarding the application of these rules. If the percentage rule is used for MDOF systems and earthquake loading, at least a value of 45% should be used for the combination factor.
The incoherent neutron scattering cross section of molecular liquids is analyzed using a damping function model for correlation functions of molecular translations and rotations. The present approach is different from recent works in that the scattering function is evaluated directly, not through the intermediate scattering function. The damping fuction is determined from a simple relation between its long-wavelength limit and the generalized frequency distribution function, and translation-rotation couplings are assumed to be neglected. A physical model is used for the translational motions of center-of-mass of a molecule, including properly its short-time and long-time behaviors. A simple model for the rotational motions is suggested which relates the damping function to the Fourier transform of the dipole correlation function, or equivalently, the infrared vibrational absorption spectrum. Theoretical absolute scattering intensities are computed for liquid methane and shown to be in satisfactory agreement with both thermal and cold neutron measurements.
A common form of construction for apartment buildings consists of walls and coupling elements. But, the structural behavior of coupling elements are very complex and affected by the properties of coupling elements. The objective of this study is to estimate the behavior of coupling elements in wall-dominant systems. For the purpose of this study, two wall-slab specimens and two wall-beam specimens were tested. The specimens with different reinforcement layouts were subjected to reversed cyclic loading, consistent with coupling action, with increasing imposed inelastic deformations. From the results of this study, 1) in coupling slabs, the stresses were not uniform across the width, 2) the effective width of coupling slabs was found smaller than that of predicted from previous studies, 3) diagonally reinforced coupling beam with slab showed larger ductility and more amount of energy dissipation to be attained compared with conventionally reinforced coupling beam.
This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as energy dissipation devices in structural applications. Shaking table tests are carried out on the viscoelastically damped structure and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of the inelastic analysis results for the same test structure with no dampers added. It can be concluded the viscoelastic dampers are effective in reducing excessive vibrations of structures under strong earthquake ground motions. It is also observed that the increase in structure's stiffness by the addition of dampers can not contribute to improving the seismic response of a structure. In general. the reduction of the seismic response by adding the dampers to the structure is mostly resulted from the increased damping effect. It is found that the modal strain energy method can be used to reliably predict the equivalent structural damping. and the seismic response of a viscoelastically damped structure can be accurately estimated by conventional modal analysis techniques.
The seismic fragility curves of a structure represents the probability of exceeding the prescribed structural damage given various levels of ground motion intensityand the seismic fragility curve is essential to evaluation of structural performance and assessment of risk and loss of structures. The purpose of this paper is to develop seismic fragility functions for bridge structures in Koreaby reviewing those of advanced countries. Therefore, at first, we investigated development conditions of the seismic fragility functions. And the next highway bridges in Korea are classified into a number of categories and several typical bridges are selected to estimate seismic fragilities for using this analysis method in Korea. Finally, fragility curves for PSC Box girder bridge are estimated. The results show that the bridge classification and damage state play an important role in estimation of seismic damage and seismic fragility analysis for bridge structures.

With bending moment, torsional moment due to geometric properties as "Initial curvature" acts in horizontally curved I-girder. These behavior causes the secondary effect of bending in minor-axis because of interaction between bending and torsion. The bending and torsion interaction cause a loss of load bearing capacity by induced the early inelastic or plasticity condition in curved girder. Also eccentric load by movements of traffic can increase torsion. However, Equation of interaction between bending and torsion for straight girder, not deal with characteristics of curved girder behavior in previous studies, can be overestimated for ultimate strength in horizontally curved I-girder acting vertical force. Therefore, using more rational, obvious suggestion is required when design curved girder. In this study, we identified the bending-torsional moment interaction for the horizontally curved I-girder of the eccentric load acting by FEM analysis.

Infinite element approach has been widely used to analysis soil-structure interaction, in which the soil domain is treated as infinite domain. However, most of the developed infinite element has been formulated in the frequency domain rather than the time domain to include the frequency contents of the earthquake or vibration wave. Due to that, those approaches have a critical limitation which is restricted to the linear elastic analysis. To main objective of this research is to develop the infinite element in the time domain to cooperate the inelastic soil and structure behavior. Developed infinite element is verified with the results of finite element analysis modeled in large domain. The nonlinear analysis also conducted to demonstrate the application of developed infinite element. Hence, based on above-mentioned statements, it can be concluded that the propose approach would assist for structure-seismic design.

Constitutive modeling of constituent materials is very important for reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Cyclic constitutive behavior of unconfined concrete, confined concrete and reinforcing steel should be well defined in fiber-based discretization of RC sections. This study performs nonlinear dynamic analyses of RC frame structures to investigate the sensitivity of seismic behavior of such frames to different constitutive models of constituent materials. The study specifically attempts to examine confinement effects in concrete modeling and degrading effects in steel modeling, which substantially affects the monotonic, cyclic and seismic responses of RC members and frames. Based on the system level analysis, it is shown that the response of non-ductile frames is less sensitive to confined concrete models while the modeling of reinforcing steel is quite influential to the inelastic response of both non-ductile and ductile frames.

It has been shown that ion implantation produces remarkable improvements in surface-sensitive physical and chemical properties as well as other mechanical properties, in polymers. In this study, ion implantation was performed onto polymer, PC(polycarbonate), in order to investigate surface hydrophilic property through contact angle measurement using distilled water. PC was irradiated with N, Ar, Xe ions at the irradiation energy of $20\;{\sim}\;50keV$ and the dose range of $5{\times}10^{15},\;1{\times}10^{16},\;7{\times}10^{16}\;ions/cm^2$. The contact angle of water has been reduced with increasing fluence and ion mass but increased with increasing implanted energy. The changes of chemical and structural property are discussed in view of infrared spectroscopy and FT-IR, XPS, which shows increasing C-O bonding and C-C bonding. The root mean square of surface roughness examined by means of AFM changed smoothly from 0.387nm to 0.207nm and the change of wettability was discussed with respect to elastic and inelastic collisions obtained as results of TRIM simulation. It was found that wettability of the modified PC surface was affected on change of functional group and nuclear stopping or linear energy transfer(LET, energy deposited per unit track length per ion) that causes chain scission by displacing atom from polymer chains, but was not greatly dependant on surface morphology.
In this study, we demonstrated the characteristics of the near-fault ground motion thatwas not considered in the domestic seismic design code and how the effect of the near-fault ground motion affects the response of cable-stayed bridges. Afterselecting the actual measurement records of the typical near- and far-fault ground motion, the characteristics of ground motion is analyzed using the elastic and inelastic response spectrum. Analyzing the response regarding the earthquake's characteristics on cable-stayed bridges by the typical three-type cable-stayed bridges and the actual cable-stayed bridge, the characteristics of responses about main members are compared and analyzed. Moreover, reliability analysis is accomplished using the results of the seismic response analysis, and the seismic safety of the cable-stayed bridges is evaluated quantitatively as a reliability index and probability of failure. According to the results of the response spectrum, the earthquake response analysis and the reliability analysis, because the effect of the near fault ground motion against the response of cable-stayed bridges is different from the effect of the existing far-fault ground motion, it should be considered as an important factor when designing cable-stayed bridges.
