  • Recently, damage to waterside structures, such as bridges or retaining walls, is increasing due to typhoons, flooding, aging, etc. In such cases, the damage is not limited to the structures themselves, but can include effects on a wider scale, such as the suspension of and restriction of access to the facilities, human injury, economic loss, etc. To preclude such damage, recovery methods suitable for the particular field circumstances should be applied when damage occurs. By enforcing prompt repairs, the material and human damage and losses that can occur can be minimized. Since the impact of losses caused by damage and disaster increases with the elapse of time, emergency recovery is even more important. In the emergency recovery process, appropriate repair and reinforcement is crucial. In the present study, the derivation scenarios of the emergency recovery method were applied to some field recovery cases, and their applicability was verified by comparison with the recovery methods actually used. It is expected that the results of this study will be useful for practical application, by suggesting more appropriate recovery methods.

  • Recently, the quality of a product or system has becoming increasingly important as it means customer satisfaction. The function, which is recognized as a nature of this quality, means how it functions well so it is the closest to the customer satisfaction. On the other hand, it is becoming more important as safety is closely related to destruction or human injury from accidents for engineers who handle large-scaled structures, such as ships. This study analyzed the function using quality function development (QFD) and considering the function and safety, which are being recognized as important in the structure. In addition, the safety and the quality analysis method based on the customers' needs was analyzed using failure mode and influence analysis (FMEA). In addition, the supplementary materials that are important in terms of the aspect of safety and function for the quality enhancement of a hatchway system were determined by applying a bulk carrier and hatchway. As a result, there are commonly understood items in important supplementary materials and parts, which are determined individually in terms of function and safety, because they can enhance both the function and safety simultaneously. This study shows that designers can improve the quality of products and systems by enhancing these supplementary materials and parts with greater interest.

  • Frangible bullets, which are shredded after impact on a target, reduce the possibility of both ricochet and unexpected injury in shooting training and in mission acts in dams, nuclear power plants, and cultural properties. Reducing the levels of hazardous materials in shooting ranges, such as lead, has become an important agenda for the government and environmental groups. In this study, the shape of a frangible bullet was designed for efficient shredding, and the safety and reliability were confirmed by actual firing under different process conditions. In addition, the physical characteristics, such as compaction pressure, density, and frangibility of each process, were compared by analyzing the microstructure of the sintered frangible bullet. The experiment revealed the smallest fragmentation after impact on the target under the following conditions: Cu-Sn 85:15; sintering temperature, 600℃; sintering time, one hour. Further development of the process conditions and experimental methods will contribute to the performance and environmental improvement of a frangible bullet.

  • There is a cause and effect relationship in that brain injury causes impairment of mental rotation and ultimately independent functional activities. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of mental rotation on reaction time and precision between the normal adults and chronic hemiparetic stroke patients. Thirty-one patients with chronic hemiparetic stroke and twenty normal adults participated in this study. The participants conducted 2 types of tasks for mental rotation: a comparison task using mirror images, and a rotation task using angular disparity images for 2 different 3-dimensional objects. Each of the 3 possible angled shapes ($90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$, and $270^{\circ}$) appeared in each pair. The test consisted of 6 mirror-reflected image pairs and 6 angular disparity image pairs visualized during angular rotation, and 12 test periods. The subjects were judged on how accurately and rapidly they could distinguish between the mirrored and non-mirrored pairs. The study measured reaction time and precision to compare the effect of mental rotation tasks. Reaction time during all 3 angular conditions were significantly longer in the stroke patients than that in the normal adult during the comparison tasks and the rotation tasks. In addition, precision during mental rotation tasks was not significantly different between normal adults and stroke patients. Our results suggest that rehabilitation therapists should keep in mind that mental rotation is more difficult in stroke population than in normal adults.

  • Paddy lands around industrial areas in Gyeonggi and Jeonbuk provinces are increasingly concerned about pollution by heavy metals. This stimulated the quantitative analysis of copper, zinc, lead and cadmium in the soil from the aress concerned. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Heavy metal contents of the soil from Sue-Myun, Siheung-Gun, Gyunggi province were 20.95 ppm of Cu, 226.46 ppm of Zn, 84.17 ppm of Pb, and 2.62 ppm of Cd, respectively. Those of Anyang, Kimpo, and Jeonbuk areas were as low as the natural background levels, about 10 ppm. 2. The contentration of heavy metals of the river valley soils tended to increase from upper stream to the lower. This seemed to be caused by the fact tat disposed water from plants flows to the lower stream and metals contained in the water accummlate in the soils around the lower stream. 3. Cadmium content was exceptionally lower than 0.2 ppm in all the areas tested. The present concentartion of cadmium is not of the extent to which any injury could occur to rice plants.

  • The liver is vulnerable to alcohol-related injury because it is the primary site of alcohol metabolism. Additionally, a number of potentially dangerous by-products are generated as alcohol is broken down in the liver. However, dietary supplements may prevent or relieve some of alcohol's deleterious effects. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the prophylactic effect of aqueous extract of Sesamum indicum (SI) on ethanol induced toxicity in rats. Male Wistar albino rats were divided into control, ethanol, pre-treatment, simultaneous and post-treatment groups. In the prophylactic experiment, Sesamum indicum, (200 mg/kg body weight) was administered by oral gavage for 28 days; two hours before, simultaneously with or two hours after ethanol exposure. Toxicity was induced by administering 45% ethanol (4.8 g/kg bw) by oral gavage. Lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and gluthathione-S-transferase (GST) activities were then determined in the liver, serum triglyceride (TG) levels, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities were monitored and histological examination was carried out. The results revealed that ethanol administration led to significant elevation of TBARS level while depleting in the level of GSH as well as CAT, GPx, SOD and GST activities. Similarly, TG level and ALT and AST activities were elevated. The SI pre-treated group significantly inhibited TBARS, restored GSH level, enhanced CAT, GPx, SOD and GST activities and significantly decreased the elevated level of serum TG, ALT and AST activities. SI treatment (simultaneously with ethanol) exhibited similar effects to those of the SI pre-treated groups, while the SI post-treated group did not show the same protection as the Pre-treated group. S. indicum possesses antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties, that eliminate the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites of ethanol.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the lower extremity muscle activities according to the different longitudinal arch and treadmill inclination and to provide basic data on treadmill walking exercise. The selected 17 subjects who had not lower extremity injury and ROM limitation were recruited in this study. The longitudinal arch was divided into normal foot and flat foot. The inclinations of the treadmill were $0^{\circ}$, up hill $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, down hill $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. The electromyography was used to analyze the muscle activity of rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius lateralis and medialis. There were significant differences between the inclination $0^{\circ}$ and down hill $15^{\circ}$. There was no interactive effect of treadmill inclination on the longitudinal arch. The activity difference of lower extremity muscle was not conspicious. There existed the interactive effect between the longitudinal arch and muscle activity. The contrast test within subjects showed positively in the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius medialis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius medialis. The different longitudinal arch did not influence on the effect(p>.05). There was significant difference between the normal foot and the flat foot. So it is necessary to carry out the long term study.

  • Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) has been widely used in traditional medicine and is considered to have medicinal properties to treat diseases and symptoms such as bronchitis, coughs, spasm, edema, hepatitis, colitis, and lung injury. In order to investigate whether native Codonopsis lanceolata extract alleviates ashmatic symptoms in vivo, we first carried out various antioxidant activities by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assays. The antioxidant activities were increased by adding Codonopsis lanceolata extract in a concentration-dependent manner which compared to ascorbic acid as a positive control. Histological studies using an ovalbumin-induced animal model exhibited potent anti-inflammatory potential by decreasing immuno-responsive cells in the lung by the extract by confirming H&E and PAS staining. It is revelaed that further immunihistochemical analysis showed anti-ashmatic capabilities by assessing histamine, IL-31, and MMP-9 expressions. The level of IL-13 expression in Codonopsis lanceolata extract-treated group was decreased upto 73.7% compared to control, whereas that of total cells and eosinophil counting in Codonopsis lanceolata extract-treated group was diminished to 73.5% and 80.9%, respectively. These results collectively indicate that the C. lanceolata extract ameliorates asthmatic symptoms effectively in an ovalbumin-challenged mice model, in that the extract can be used for the development of an anti-asthmatic food ingredient.
