  • As the use of waste and biomass increases in a power generation boiler, high temperature corrosion (HTC) problems of boiler heat exchangers are becoming very important. Chlorine of the low-rank fuels is mainly responsible for the HTC issues, which typically occur in the surface of high temperature heat exchanger like a superheater or reheater. In order to mitigate the problem, various approaches have been proposed in terms of design modification, material improvement, fuel pre-treatment and additive utilization. In this study, the current state of research and development focused on the additive method was investigated.

Effects of Operating Conditions on NOx Emission in OFA-type Boiler (OFA형 보일러의 운전조건이 NOx 발생에 미치는 영향)

  • In the present study, the characteristics of combustion phenomena and NOx emission in the OFA-type tangentially injected coal-fired boiler have been investigated numerically in order to find the effect of geometrical variation on the performance of the boiler. For these, numerical analyses of turbulent flow, chemical reaction, and radiation heat transfer are performed by using the computational fluid dynamics method. The predicted results clearly show that NOx formation highly depends on the combustion processes, the temperature and species concentrations. In addition, the optimum conditions for both the maximum NOx reduction and highest boiler efficiency can be obtained by considering the amount of supplied air and the injection angle at OFA, and modifying the boiler configuration. It is also found that the variation of supplied air at OFA is more effective than that of the injection angle for reducing the NOx emission, within the present operating conditions.

  • Boilers, which are considered to be one of the basic equipment in industry, consume large potion of nation's petroleum and their demand is growing everyday. In recent, the technology improvement in production of high efficiency boilers and their effective utilization is needed for design of boiler which steam condition is the large capacity of high temperature and high pressure. It is necessary that boiler control system be studied for high efficiency, high reliability and smooth operation. The control of drum pressure and water level particularly becomes an important task for greater accuracy with the avail ability of boiler operation. To achieve this aim, dynamic analysis of a boiler is accomplished by choosing a boiler as a model. Transfer function thus obtained is made a comparison of measurement with reckoning to technical design data. The results of comparison makes it possible to verify thermodynamical analysis on the dynamic behavior of the overall system.

Analysis on the Heat Exchange Efficiency of Kraft Recovery Boiler by Nose Arch Structure Using CFD (CFD를 활용한 크래프트 회수보일러 내부 노즈 아치 구조에 따른 열교환 효율 분석)

  • A kraft recovery boiler produces steam for power generation by the combustion of black liquor from the kraft pulping process. Since saturated steam became superheated in a superheater above the furnace, it is important to increase the heat exchange efficiency for the superheated steam production and power generation. A nose arch at the bottom of the superheater is important for blocking radiation from the furnace which causes corrosion of the superheater. But the nose arch is the main reason for creating a recirculation region and then decreasing the heat exchange efficiency by holding cold flue gas after the heat transfer to saturated steam. In this study, the size of recirculation region and the temperature of flue gas at the outlet were analyzed by the nose arch structure using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). As a result, when the nose arch angle changed from 106.5° (case 1) to 150° (case4), the recirculation region of flue gas decreased and the heat exchange efficiency between the flue gas and the steam increased by 10.3%.

  • Catalytic combustion is the environmental-friendly technology, which has been applied to a variety of areas for industrial and domestic use in recent years. Accordingly, this study performed the development of the catalytic manufacturing technology for the high temperature and of the catalytic combustor in priority, which were aimed to be applied to a commercialized boiler. Paliadium(Pd) of a noble metal was used as a catalyst for the high temperature and supported on alumina($Al_[2}O_{3}$) and zirconia($ZrO_{2}$) in constant weight ratio. Activity of Pd catalysts is compared and analyzed in the catalytic combustion of natural gas. The ratio of $Pd/Al_{2}O_{3}=4$ was found to be better than any other weight ratios in activity and durability. The performance examination of catalysts and of combustion through the plate-type combustor made it possible to be developed the cylindrical-type combustor which has increased combustion area. Catalytic combustion boiler of 25,000 kcal/hr class was also developed, which had the optimum combustion condition at the nozzle of 5.95mm and the orifice of 21mm. This condition was determined through the performance experiments of catalytic combustion boiler to which the cylindrical-type catalytic combustor was applied.

PAHs Source Fingerprints for Municipal Incinerator, Motor Vehicle Fuels and Industrial Boilers Emission (발생원별에 따른 PAHs 배출특성)

  • The results of individual PAH source profiles that can be applied to receptor model are as follows. The sum of 16 PAH concentrations was 391.41 ng/S㎥ in a tunnel. Phenanthrene was the most abundant compound among 16 PAH, and then pyrene, fluoranthene, anthracene, and naphthalene can be seen in elevated contents. 11,056.61 ng/S㎥ of 16 PAH concentrations in BC oil boiler was two times higher than 6,582.57 ng/S㎥) of those in LNG boiler. Naphthalene was the most abundant compound in both facilities. Phenanthrene, anthracene, and acenaphthylene were the second dominant compound group in order from both facilities. BC oil boiler had relatively high concentration of pyrene compared to LNG boiler that had high concentration of fluorene and did not detect pyrene. The sum of 16 PAH concentrations emitted from MSW incinerators after APCD (air pollution control device) was three times higher than those from MSW incinerators before APCD. However, the concentrations of more than 4-ring PAH compounds (e.g., benzo (a)anthracene) before APCD were higher than those after APCD. This fact implies that PAHs generated by combustion process are eliminated in APCD and they are continuously produced in stack or atmosphere by PAHs precursors.

Numerical Study on the Ventilation Performance in the Boiler Building with and without Roof Openings (루프 환기구에 따른 보일러빌딩 내부 환기성능에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Objectives: The objective of this paper is to find flow and heat transfer characteristics numerically in boiler buildings for three different ventilation window configurations. Methods: Turbulent natural convection flow in boiler buildings with a constant heating wall temperature was analyzed numerically. Governing equations were solved with standard finite-volume method using the SIMPLE algorithm. Conclusions: Flow and heat transfer characteristics are found for three different ventilation types. In the lower area under furnace, velocity and temperature distributions show similar patterns among the three different ventilation types. In the upper area over furnace, however, air flow is well mixed with lower peak temperatures for types B and C, which have roof ventilation windows, compared to type A which has side wall louvers only. Also, type B, with a single large roof window, shows better ventilation effect than does type C with its distribution roof windows.

  • For many industrial processes there are good static models used for process design and steady state operation. By using system identification techniques, it is possible to obtain black-box models with reasonable complexity that describe the system well in specific operating conditions [1]. But black-box models using inductive modeling(IM) is not suitable for model based control because they are only valid for specific operating conditions. Thus we need to use deductive modeling(DM) for a wide operating range. Furthermore, deductive modeling is several merits: First, the model is possible to be modularized. Second, we can increase and decrease the model complexity. Finally, we are able to use model for plant design. Power plant must be able to operate well at dramatic load change and consider safety and efficiency. This paper proposes a simplified nonlinear model of an industrial boiler, one of component parts of a power plant, by DM method and applies optimal control to the model.

A Study on Low-NOx Combustion in an Oil Burner for an Industrial Boiler (산업 보일러용 오일버너에서의 저 NOx 연소 연구)

  • A novel low NOx oil burner of 0.7 MW (for a 1 ton steam/hr industrial boiler) was designed and tested to investigate the combustion characteristics through in-flame measurement and flue gas analysis. Flame shape was observed by CCD camera and $CH^*/{C_2}^*$ radical distribution in the flame were observed, along with measurement of flue gas composition such as NOx and CO, for various heat inputs, excess airs and pressure of the fuel spary nozzles. The flame showed the two-zone structure: fuel-rich and fuel-lean zone, which was very favorable for the low-NOx combustion, and the NOx emission for haevy oil combustion was significantly reduced to < 150 ppm at 4 % $O_2$, compared with the NOx level of a conventional heavy oil burner.

A Case Study on the Facilities Layout with FactoryCAD in a Boiler Factory (FactoryCAD를 이용한 보일러 제조업체의 설비배치 사례연구)

  • This paper deals with a case study on the process improvement and the layout design of a boiler factory with FactoryCAD. Firstly, two alternatives of job reallocation are suggested with the understanding of problems in current process. The layout planning for these new alternatives is carried out by simple procedure and the detailed analyses are performed by the aid of FactoryCAD program. The result shows that the new layout plan brings on about 10% reduction of travel distance. The utilization of FactoryCAD program can simplify the process of layout design.
