This paper deals with filter design for utility-interactive voltage-sourced PWM inverters built by single-phase full-bridge topology By analyzing the relation between utility voltage and the ac output voltage of single-phase half-bridge inverters, the instantaneous voltage applied on the filter inductor is deduced qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, switching ripple current through the filter inductor is calculated from the filter inductor voltage. Based on the above mentioned analysis, filter design method is proposed by evaluating the percentage of the switching ripple current against the rated fundamental current. Proposed filter design method is verified by simulation and experiment.
Because the on-board charger (OBC) is installed in electric vehicles (EVs), high power density is regarded as a key technology. Among components of the OBC, inductors occupy more than 30% of the total volume. Thus, it is important to reduce the volume and the weight of inductors while maintaining thermal stability. Discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) can satisfy these requirements; however, only a few studies have adopted the DCM operation for OBCs because of the large inductor current ripple. In this paper, a design process is proposed for application of the DCM operation to OBCs. In order to analyze the inductor losses accurately, a numerical formula for the inductor current ripple is deduced based on a detailed analysis. Two inductors are fabricated using several ferrite cores and powder cores taking into consideration the inductor size, inductor losses, and temperature rise. In order to verify the analysis and design process, experimental results are presented that show that the designed inductors satisfy the requirements of the OBCs.

This paper proposes two modified Z-source inverter topologies, namely an embedded L-Z-source inverter (EL-ZSI) and a coupled inductor L-Z source inverter (CL-ZSI). The proposed topologies offer a high voltage gain with a reduced passive component count and reduction in source current ripple when compared to conventional ZSI topologies. Additionally, they prevent overshoot in the dc-link voltage by suppressing heavy inrush currents. This feature reduces the transition time to reach the peak value of the dc-link voltage, and reduces the risk of component failure and overrating due to the inrush current. EL-ZSI and CL-ZSI possess all of the inherent advantages of the conventional L-ZSI topology while eliminating its drawbacks. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed topologies, MATLAB/Simulink models and scaled down laboratory prototypes were constructed. Experiments were performed at a low shoot through duty ratio of 0.1 and a modulation index as high as 0.9 to obtain a peak dc-link voltage of 53 V. This paper demonstrates the superiority of the proposed topologies over conventional ZSI topologies through a detailed comparative analysis. Moreover, experimental results verify that the proposed topologies would be advantageous for renewable energy source applications since they provide voltage gain enhancement, inrush current, dc-link voltage overshoot suppression and a reduction of the peak to peak source current ripple.
This paper presents the performance improvement of voltage-mode controlled interleaved synchronous buck converters. This is a voltage-mode controlled scheme, where the controllers do not need an external saw-tooth generator for PWM generation and the loop design is easier. The controller implementation requires only a single error amplifier and gives almost current mode control performance. The control scheme uses voltage feedback with two loops similar to current mode control: one for the slow outer loop and the other for the faster inner PWM control loop. To improve the performance of the converter system a coupled inductor is used. This coupled inductor reduces the magnetic size and also improves the converter's transient performance without increasing the steady-state current ripple. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated through PSIM simulations.

Input current ripple and harmonic components of the power device are main causes of electromagnetic interference (EMI). Although the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) operation can reduce harmonic components of the power device by reducing reverse recovery current of diode and turn-off voltage spikes of the switch, input current ripple increases due to high peak to peak inductor current. Therefore, in this paper, frequency control algorithm is proposed to reduce the input current ripple of DCM operated interleaved boost converter. In the proposed algorithm, duty ratio is fixed either 0.33 or 0.67 to minimize the input current ripple and the switching frequency is controlled according to operating conditions. 600 W 3-phase interleaved boost converter prototype system is built to verify proposed algorithm.
In this paper, a ripple input current embedded switched-inductor Z-source inverter (rESL-ZSI) and a continuous input current embedded switched-inductor Z-source inverter (cESL-ZSI) are proposed by inserting two dc sources into the switched-inductor cells. The proposed inverters provide a high boost voltage inversion ability, a lower voltage stress across the active switching devices, a continuous input current and a reduced voltage stress on the capacitors. In addition, they can suppress the startup inrush current, which otherwise might destroy the devices. This paper presents the operating principles, analysis, and simulation results, and compares them to the conventional switched-inductor Z-source inverter. In order to verify the performance of the proposed converters, a laboratory prototype was constructed with 60 $V_{dc}$ input to test both configurations.
In the design of battery chargers, limiting the output ripple current according to the manufacturer's recommendation is important for reliable service and extended battery life. Ripple components can cause internal heating of the battery and thus reduce the service life of the battery. Care must be exerted in the design of the switching converter for the charge application through the accurate estimation of the output current ripple value. This study proposes a method to reduce the output current ripple of the converter and presents a detailed analysis of the output current ripple of the DC-DC boost converter to provide a guideline for the design of the battery charger.
For the purpose of designing an intrinsic safety Flyback converter with minimal output voltage ripple based on a specified output current, this paper first classified the energy transmission modes of the system into three sorts, namely, the Complete Inductor Supply Mode-CCM (CISM-CCM), the Incomplete Inductor Supply Mode-CCM (IISM-CCM) and the Incomplete Inductor Supply Mode-DCM (IISM-DCM). Then, the critical secondary self-inductance assorting the three modes are deduced and expressions of the output voltage ripples (OVR) are presented. For a Flyback converter with constant loads and switching frequency, it is shown that the output voltage ripple in the CISM-CCM is the smallest and that it has no relationship with the secondary self-inductance. Otherwise, the OVR of the other two modes are bigger than the previously mentioned one. It is concluded that the critical inductance between the CISM-CCM and the IISM-CCM is the minimal secondary self-inductance to ensure the smallest output voltage ripple. At last, a design method to guarantee the minimum OVR within the scales of the input voltage and load are analyzed, and the minimum secondary self-inductance is proposed to minimize the OVR. Simulations and experiments are given to verify the results.
High-gain DC/DC converters have become one of the key technologies for the grid-connected operation of new energy power generation, and its research provides a significant impetus for the rapid development of new energy power generation. Inspired by the transformer effect and the ripple-suppressed ability of a coupled inductor, a double-coupled inductor high gain DC/DC converter with a ripple absorption circuit is proposed in this paper. By integrating the diode-capacitor voltage multiplying unit into the quadratic Boost converter and assembling the independent inductor into the magnetic core of structure coupled inductors, the adjustable range of the voltage gain can be effectively extended and the limit on duty ratio can be avoided. In addition, the volume of the magnetic element can be reduced. Very small ripples of input current can be obtained by the ripple absorption circuit, which is composed of an auxiliary inductor and a capacitor. The leakage inductance loss can be recovered to the load in a switching period, and the switching-off voltage spikes caused by leakage inductance can be suppressed by absorption in the diode-capacitor voltage multiplying unit. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, the feasibility of the proposed converter is verified by test results obtained by simulations and an experimental prototype.
A photovoltaic power conditioning system (PV PCS) that contains single-phase dc/ac inverters tends to draw an ac ripple current at twice the output frequency. Such a ripple current perturbs the operating points of solar cells continuously and it may reduce the efficiency of the current based maximum power point tracking technique (CMPPT). In this paper, the ripple current generation in a dc link and boost inductor is analyzed using the ac equivalent circuit of a dc/dc boost converter. A new feed-forward ripple current compensation method to incorporate a current control loop into a dc/dc converter for ripple reduction is proposed. The proposed feed-forward compensation method is verified by simulation and experimental results. These results show a 41.8 % reduction in the peak-to peak ac ripple. In addition, the dc/ac inverter control system uses an automatic voltage regulation (AVR) function to mitigate the ac ripple voltage effect in the dc link. A 3kW PV PCS prototype has been built and its experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
