The axial-flow type blood pump(XVAD) which has been developed in our group consists of mechanical parts (an impeller, a diffuser and a flow straightener) and electrical parts (a motor and a magnetic bearing). The magnetic bearing system fully levitates the impeller to remove mechanical coupling with other parts of the pump with constant gap, which needs non-contact type gap sensing. Conventional gap sensors are too large to be adopted to the implantable axial -flow type blood pump. Thus, in this paper, the compact eddy current type gap sensor system proper for the implantable axial-flow type blood pump was developed and its performance was evaluated in vitro. The developed eddy current type gap sensor system is a transformer type and has a differential probe. Sensor coil(probe) has small dimensions(6 mm diameter, 2 mm thickness) and its optimal inductance was determined as 0.068 mH for the measurement range of $0\sim3mm$. It could be manufactured with 130 turns of the 0.04 mm diameter copper coil. The characteristics of the developed eddy current type gap sensor system was evaluated by in vitro experiment. At experiment, it showed satis(actory performance to apply to the magnetic bearing system of the XVAD. It could measure the gap up to 3mm, but the linearity was decreased at the range of $1.8\sim3.0mm$. Moreover, it showed no difference in different media such as the water and the blood at the temperature range of $35\sim40^{\circ}C$.

A magnetic field exposure system that generates 60 Hz magnetic fields from 1 mG to 5 G was designed and constructed for small-sized animal study. In order to investigate as many animals as possible at one series of test, uniform magnetic fields are required at wide living area of the animals. In this article, a cubic shaped field exposure system with three animal living floors was designed, which offers about 50 seating capacity. For calculation of magnetic fields inside the cage, a three-dimensional calculation program was developed. Using this, optimum electric current ratio of inner coil to outer coil and position of each coil were determined. Meanwhile, inductance of the exposure system was calculated for the design of power supply. The field measurement results of the manufactured exposure system showed that the difference between maximum and minimum magnetic field at the testing floors was less than 3%, which strongly demonstrated the field exposure system was good for small sized animal study.

In this paper, characteristics on arrangement of coils in the wireless power transfer system based on magnetic resonance is presented. A helical structure is used for a self-resonant coil. To design a proper self-resonant helical coil, its inductance and capacitance are obtained. Using the finite element method, the self-resonant coil designed is simulated and characteristics of wireless power transfer with various arrangement between Tx and Rx resonant coils is analyzed. For verification, a prototype of a wireless power transfer system based on magnetic resonance is fabricated and efficiency of different arrangement such as both vertical and parallel arrangements is measured. From the measurement, transmission efficiency of 50 % for parallel arrangement is obtained within twice the diameter of the coil while for the vertical arrangement it is measured within one and a half diameter of the coil. Maximum efficiency of 84.25 % is observed at the distance 40 cm from the resonant coil in the case of parallel arrangement.
This paper presented the design of wireless power transfer (WPT) system using electromagnetic induction techniques and analysed WPT efficiency. Also, we presented the optimum coil condition by measuring the efficiency variation according to some receiving coil parameter changes. Voltage change is measured by receiving coil position for the designed transmitting and receiving circuit. Voltage change according to inductance variation at the same position and charging time are compared at the same environment by using a developed application program to realize an optimum WPT system. Developed wireless power transfer system using electromagnetic induction techniques uses 125 kHz. It takes 16 minutes by using wired charger, and 23 minutes by using wireless charger for charging from 50% to 60% charging status.

The design of low voltage LC-VCO(LC Voltage Controlled Oscillator) has been presented to optimize the phase noise and power consumption for the block of frequency synthesis to satisfy WCDMA system specification in this paper. The parameters for minimum phase noise has been obtained in the region of design, using the lines of the tuning range and the excess gain in the plane of the inductance and the transconductance of MOS transistor to compensate the loss of LC-tank. As a result of simulation, the phase noise characteristics is -113dBc/Hz for offset of 1MHz. The optimum designed LC-VCO has been fabricated using the process of 0.25um CMOS. As a result of measurement for fabricated chip, the phase noise characteristics is -116dBc/Hz for offset of 1MHz. The power consumption is 15mW, and Kvco is 370MHz/V.
There is a growing demand for non-contact current measurements for efficient use of electrical power and energy saving. In this study, I propose a non-contact current sensor using LC resonance by a resonance circuit composed of a sensor coil and 2 coupling coils for enabling a wireless measurement. The inductance of the sensor coil, which could be changed by applied current, causes the change of resonance frequency of the resonance circuit. A pair of magnet was attached to the ferrite core to apply a bias magnetic field that enabled the determination of the current direction. We obtained an output voltage change of 18 V with the current of -3~3 A. But, the output was nonlinear. In order to realize the non-contact current measuring method proposed in the present study, there is a need for a strict investigation of linearity and resolution for the future study.

In this paper, novel lumped equivalent circuits for a conventional parallel directional coupler are proposed. This novel equivalent circuits only have self inductance and self capacitance, so we can design exact lumped equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit and design formula for the presented lumped element coupler is derived based on the even- and odd-mode properties of a parallel-coupled line. By using the derived design formula, we have designed the 3 dB and 10 dB lumped element directional couplers at the center frequency of 100 MHz and 2 GHz, respectively a chip type directional coupler has been designed with multilayer configurations by employing commercial EM simulator. Designed chip-type directional couplers have a 3 dB-coupling value at the center frequency of 2 GHz and fabricated lumped directional coupler on fr4 organic substrate has a 3 dB, 10 dB-coupling values at the center frequency of 100 MHz. Excellent agreements between simulation results and measurement results on the designed directional couplers show the validity of this paper. Furthermore, in order to adapt to multi-layer process such as Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC), chip-type lumped element couplers have been designed by using this method.

Inductive sensors are versatile and economical devices that are widely used to measure a wide variety of physical variables, such as displacement, force, and pressure. In this paper, we propose a simple inductive sensor consisting of a thin partial ring and a coil set. The self-inductance of the sensor was estimated using magnetic circuit analysis and validated through finite element analysis (FEA). The natural frequency of the ring was estimated using Castigliano's theorem and the method of equivalent mass. The estimation was validated through experiments and FEA. A prototype sensor with a signal processing circuit is built and applied to noninvasively sense the pressure inside a flexible tube. The obtained sensor outputs show quadratic behavior with respect to the pressure. When fitted to a quadratic equation, the least-square measurement error was less than 2%. The results confirm the feasibility of pressure sensing using the proposed inductive sensor.

In this paper, a new active damping method of LCL filter without capacitor voltage sensors is proposed for 3 phase PWM Inverter. Normally, L filter or LCL filter is used as an output filter of grid connected PWM inverter. An LCL filter has more excellent performance than L filter to reduce harmonic current, so the small inductance value can be used. However, the resonance problem in LCL filter is happen due to the zero impedance by the addition of LC branch. To solve the resonance problem, the various active damping method has been proposed so far. Generally, the virtual resistor active damping methods is required to additional hardware sensors for measurement of capacitor voltage and current. In this paper, the new active damping method is proposed without any capacitor voltage or current sensors. In the proposed method, the resonance component of the capacitor voltage of LCL filter can be observed by a simple MRAS(Model Reference Adaptive System) observer without additional hardware sensors, and this component is suppressed by feedforward compensation. The validity of the proposed method is proven by simulation and experiment on the 3-phase PWM inverter system.

In recent, there have been several developments in lamp technology that promise savings in electrical power consumption and improved quality of the lighting space. Above all, the advantage of ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp is the removal of internal electrodes and heating filaments that are a light-limiting factor of conventional fluorescent lamps. The ring-shaped electrodeless lamp is intended as a high efficiency replacement for the incandescent reflector lamp in many applications. Therefore, the life time of ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamps is substantially higher than that of conventional fluorescent lamps and last up to 60,000 hours. In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program(Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250 KHz and some specific conditions. The optical characteristics were measured luminance and a temperature and an optical spectrum distribution for 10 min in a one minute interval at the same time. With a goal of finding alternative materials, we show measurement results of electrical characteristics of a ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp as a function of frequency and the number of coil turns using a highly permeable($\mu$$_{r}$(equation omitted) 2,000) Mn-Zn ferrite. These results are compared with those of conventional ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp. It is found that the resistance, inductance and impedance are increased while the quality factor decreases as frequency increases.s.
