Ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric effects for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics have been investigated. The data show that magnetoelectric polarization coefficient, ${\alpha}_p$ is due to a linear coupling between polarization and magnetization, and that ${\alpha}_p$ is independent of dc magnetic bias and ac magnetic field. The values of ${\alpha}_p$ and magnetic induced susceptibility for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics are much larger than those of single $BiFeO_3$ crystal. We believe that the magnetoelectric effect is significantly enhanced by breaking of the cycloidal spin state of a long-period spiral spin structure due to randomly distributed charged imperfections.

This study evaporates ZnO layer thickness' differently with RF sputtering method on Si Wafer(n-100). This study is performed to examine the characteristics of photon energy and dielectric loss according to the thickness of ZnO and increase the reliability and reproduction of ZnO thin film. It is confirmed that the variation of electric Permittivity by frequency is resulted from the formation of particles within thin film, the particle size and the polarization on grain boundary. Peak of electric Permittivity value of thin film has slower and less value in early low wavelength by the coulomb force involved in carrier combination according to the increase of frequency. Reversal of electric Permittivity values is induced by dipole polarization shown in the dielectric of thin film. Complex electric constant $({\varepsilon}_1,{\varepsilon}_2)$ has larger peak values as it's thickness is thinner and then it is larger according to the increase of frequency. Electric Permittivity by photon energy has large value in imaginary number and is reduced exponentially by the increase of carrier density according to that of photon energy.

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) is one of the most attractive perovskite-type materials for ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) due to its higher remanant polarization and the ability to withstand higher coercive fields. We first applied the damascene process using chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) to fabricate the PZT thin film capacitor to solve the problems of plasma etching including low etching profile and ion charging. The $0.8{\times}0.8\;{\mu}m$ square patterns of silicon dioxide on Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate were coated by sol-gel method with the precursor solution of PZT. Damascene process by CMP was performed to pattern the PZT thin film with the vertical sidewall and no plasma damage. The polarization-voltage (P-V) characteristics of PZT capacitors and the current-voltage characteristics (I-V) were examined by change of process parameters. To examine the CMP induced damage to PZT capacitor, the domain structure of the polished PZT thin film was also investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM).
The resonance characteristics of H-shaped metamaterials, whose widths were varied while keeping the height constant, were investigated in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The H-shaped metamaterials were numerically analyzed in two modes in which the polarization of the incident THz electric field was either parallel or perpendicular to the width of the H-shaped structure. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial changed stably in each mode, even if only the width of the H shape was changed. The resonant frequency of the metamaterial operating in the two modes increases without significant difference regardless of the polarization of the incident electromagnetic wave as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial increases. The electric field distribution and the surface current density induced in the metamaterial in the two modes were numerically analyzed by varying the structure ratio of the metamaterial. The numerical analysis clearly revealed the cause of the change in the resonance characteristics as the width of the H-shaped metamaterial changed. The efficacy of the numerical analysis was verified experimentally using the THz-TDS (time-domain spectroscopy) system. The experimental results are consistent with the simulations, clearly demonstrating the meaningfulness of the numerical analysis of the metamaterial. The analyzed resonance properties of the H-shaped metamaterial in the THz frequency range can be applied for designing THz-tunable metamaterials and improving the sensitivity of THz sensors.

Human skin cells undergo pathophysiological processes via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon excessive exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. This study investigated the ability of hesperidin ($C_{28}H_{34}O_{15}$) to prevent apoptosis due to oxidative stress generated through UVB-induced ROS. Hesperidin significantly scavenged ROS generated by UVB radiation, attenuated the oxidation of cellular macromolecules, established mitochondrial membrane polarization, and prevented the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. Hesperidin downregulated expression of caspase-9, caspase-3, and Bcl-2-associated X protein, and upregulated expression of B-cell lymphoma 2. Hesperidin absorbed wavelengths of light within the UVB range. In summary, hesperidin shielded human keratinocytes from UVB radiation-induced damage and apoptosis via its antioxidant and UVB absorption properties.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity-induced steatohepatitis accompanied by activated hepatic macrophages/Kupffer cells facilitates the progression of hepatic fibrinogenesis and exacerbates metabolic derangements such as insulin resistance. Heme oxyganase-1 (HO-1) modulates tissue macrophage phenotypes and thus is implicated in protection against inflammatory diseases. Here, we show that the flavonoid quercetin reduces obesity-induced hepatic inflammation by inducing HO-1, which promotes hepatic macrophage polarization in favor of the M2 phenotype. MATERIALS/METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a regular diet (RD), high-fat diet (HFD), or HFD supplemented with quercetin (HF+Que, 0.5g/kg diet) for nine weeks. Inflammatory cytokines and macrophage markers were measured by ELISA and RT-PCR, respectively. HO-1 protein was measured by Western blotting. RESULTS: Quercetin supplementation decreased levels of inflammatory cytokines ($TNF{\alpha}$, IL-6) and increased that of the anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) in the livers of HFD-fed mice. This was accompanied by upregulation of M2 macrophage marker genes (Arg-1, Mrc1) and downregulation of M1 macrophage marker genes ($TNF{\alpha}$, NOS2). In co-cultures of lipid-laden hepatocytes and macrophages, treatment with quercetin induced HO-1 in the macrophages, markedly suppressed expression of M1 macrophage marker genes, and reduced release of MCP-1. Moreover, these effects of quercetin were blunted by an HO-1 inhibitor and deficiency of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in macrophages. CONCLUSIONS: Quercetin reduces obesity-induced hepatic inflammation by promoting macrophage phenotype switching. The beneficial effect of quercetin is associated with Nrf2-mediated HO-1 induction. Quercetin may be a useful dietary factor for protecting against obesity-induced steatohepatitis.
We have studied the rheological and electrical properties of two types of electrorheological (ER) fluids based on semi-conductive polymers (poly(p-phenylene) and polyaniline). These semi-conductive polymer-based suspensions showed a dramatic increase in viscosity on the application of the static electric field due to the large value of conductivity ratio between particle and medium. The dynamic yield stresses of these ER suspensions exhibited a quadratic dependence on electric field strength at low electric fields and a linear one for high fields. They showed a maximum and then decreased with increasing bulk conductivity of particles. These yield stress behaviors under the static electric field were found to be closely related to the dielectric properties, which is in accord with Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization induced by the conductivity effects. In order to achieve better understanding of interfacial polarization effect on ER response and to improve the stability of ER suspension, different kinds of surfactants were employed for controlling the ER activity as well as for enhancing the colloidal stability of suspensions.
POLARBEAR is a ground-based experiment located in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. The experiment is designed to measure the Cosmic Microwave Background B-mode polarization at several arcminute resolution. The CMB B-mode polarization on degree angular scales is a unique signature of primordial gravitational waves from cosmic inflation and B-mode signal on sub-degree scales is induced by the gravitational lensing from large-scale structure. Science observations began in early 2012 with an array of 1.274 polarization sensitive antenna-couple Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers at 150 GHz. We published the first CMB-only measurement of the B-mode polarization on sub-degree scales induced by gravitational lensing in December 2013 followed by the first measurement of the B-mode power spectrum on those scales in March 2014. In this proceedings, we review the physics of CMB B-modes and then describe the Polarbear experiment, observations, and recent results.

We found that resveratrol enhances interferon (IFN)-γ-induced tryptophanyl-tRNA-synthetase (TTS) expression in bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs). Resveratrol-induced TTS expression is associated with glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) activity. In addition, we found that resveratrol regulates naive CD8+ T-cell polarization by modulating GSK-3β activity in IFN-γ-stimulated BMDCs, and that resveratol induces upregulation of TTS in CD8+ T-cells in the in vivo tumor environment. Taken together, resveratrol upregulates IFN-γ-induced TTS expression in a GSK-3β-dependent manner, and this TTS modulation is crucial for DC-mediated T-cell modulation. The effect of $Bi(Mg_{1/2}Sn_{1/2})O_3$ (BMS) modification on the crystal structure, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of $Bi_{1/2}(Na_{0.8}K_{0.2})_{1/2}TiO_3$ (BNKT) ceramics has been investigated. The BMS-substitution induced a transition from a ferroelectric (FE) tetragonal to a nonpolar pseudocubic phase, leading to degradations in the remnant polarization, coercive field, and piezoelectric coefficient $d_{33}$. However, the electric-field-induced strain was significantly enhanced by the BMS substitution-induced phase transition and reached a highest value of $S_{max}/E_{max}$ = 633 pm/V under an applied electric field of 6 kV/mm when the BMS content reached 6 mol%. The abnormal enhancement in strain was attributed to the field-induced transition of the pseudocubic symmetry to other asymmetrical structure, which was not clarified in this work.
