With the fast-developing of mobile terminals, positioning techniques based on fingerprinting method draws attention from many researchers even world famous companies. To conquer some shortcomings of the existing fingerprinting systems and further improve its performance, we propose a radio map building and updating technique, which is able to customize the spatial and temporal dependency of radio maps. The method includes indoor propagation and penetration modeling and the analysis of human traffic. Based on the combination of Ray-Tracing Algorithm, Finite-Different Time-Domain and Rough Set Theory, the approach of indoor propagation modeling accurately represents the spatial dependency of the radio map. In terms of temporal dependency, we specifically study the factor of moving people in the interest area. With measurement and statistics, the factor of human traffic is introduced as the temporal updating component. We improve our existing indoor positioning system with the proposed building and updating method, and compare the localization accuracy. The results show that the enhanced system can conquer the influence caused by moving people, and maintain the confidence probability stable during week, which enhance the actual availability and robustness of fingerprinting-based indoor positioning system.
Measurement results are presented for the effects of people moving near and across short-range indoor propagation links at 2.45 GHz (ISM band). Excess loss due to scattering and blockage by human bodies in the vicinity of one terminal were measured for different radio links in an office environment. Statistics on fades due to human body motion are given. Polarization coupling (depolarization) for various radio links was measured, and correlation of polarization components is discussed as a basis for using polarization diversity reception in short-range indoor systems.

With 5G standards proceeding in earnest and increasing demand for services of indoor localization, research on indoor location recognition is being studied in various industrial fields, and research based on fingerprint recognition technology using Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is representative. In this paper, we propose an indoor positioning system based on fingerprinting technique that uses Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) architecture and Channel State Information (CSI). In order to improve the performance in indoor positioning, we combined existing fingerprinting method and K nearest neighbor (KNN) technology which is one of the machine running technique. The performance improvements of the proposed indoor positioning system was verified by comparative experiments with the existing localization technique in a indoor localizztion testbed.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of RAKE receiver for impulse radio-ultra wide band (IR-UWB) systems in indoor multipath radio channel. Pulse position modulation-time hopping (PPM-TH) signal is considered. And we also consider three types of RAKE receivers, which are ideal RAKE, selective RAKE, and partial RAKE receivers. The indoor channel is modeled as the modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model which has been proposed as a UWB channel model by the IEEE group, IEEE 802.15.SG3a.

This paper considers the crucial problem of deploying wireless relays for achieving a connected wireless sensor network in indoor environments, an important aspect related to the management of the sensor network. Several algorithms have been proposed for ensuring full sensing coverage and network connectivity. These algorithms are not applicable to indoor environments because of the complexity of indoor environments, in which a radio signal can be dramatically degraded by obstacles such as walls. We first prove theoretically that the indoor relay placement problem is NP-hard. We then predict the radio coverage of a given relay deployment in indoor environments. We consider two practical scenarios; wire-connected relays and radio-connected relays. For the network with wire-connected relays, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm to compute the deployment locations of relays for achieving the required coverage percentage. This algorithm is proved to provide a $H_n$ factor approximation to the theoretical optimum, where $H_n=1+{\frac{1}{2}}+{\cdots}+{\frac{1}{n}}={\ln}(n)+1$, and n is the number of all grid points. In the network with radio-connected relays, relays have to be connected in an ad hoc mode. We then propose an algorithm based on the previous algorithm for ensuring the connectivity of relays. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve better performance than baseline algorithms.
In this study, we present the investigation results using a 3D radio wave propagation simulator in indoor environments. Previous studies treat only the path loss between the transmitter and receiver in 2D geometry. We provide the simulation results of indoor propagation prediction based on various ITU-R Recommendations. Simulation results compared here indicate that 150MHz and 2GHz frequency bands give quite different characteristics in presented indoor geometry. Since the field intensity is affected by the loss at the wall, the transmitting power level is one of the key factor for receiving power.
In the development of a new wireless communications system, a versatile and accurate radio channel for indoor communications is needed. In particular, the investigation of radio transmission into buildings is very important. In this letter, we present an improved three-dimensional electromagnetic wave propagation prediction model for indoor wireless communications that takes into consideration building penetration loss. A ray tracing technique based on an image method is also employed in this study. Three-dimensional models can predict any complex indoor environment composed of arbitrarily shaped walls. A speed-up algorithm, which is a modified deterministic ray tube method, is also introduced for efficient prediction and computation.

Rapid developments in wireless sensor networks have extended many applications, hence, many studies have developed wireless sensor network positioning systems for indoor environments. Among those systems, the Global Position System (GPS) is unsuitable for indoor environments due to Line-Of-Sight (LOS) limitations, while the wireless sensor network is more suitable, given its advantages of low cost, easy installation, and low energy consumption. Due to the complex settings of indoor environments and the high demands for precision, the implementation of an indoor positioning system is difficult to construct. This study adopts a low-cost positioning method that does not require additional hardware, and uses the received signal strength (RSS) values from the receiver node to estimate the distance between the test objects. Since many objects in indoor environments would attenuate the radio signals and cause errors in estimation distances, knowing the path loss exponent (PLE) in an environment is crucial. However, most studies preset a fixed PLE, and then substitute it into a radio propagation loss model to estimate the distance between the test points; such method would lead to serious errors. To address this problem, this study proposes a Path Loss Exponent Estimation Algorithm, which uses only four beacon nodes to construct a radio propagation loss model for an indoor environment, and is able to provide enhanced positioning precision, accurate positioning services, low cost, and high efficiency.
Due to recent improvement of various sensor technologies, indoor positioning becomes available. However, Indoor positioning technologies by Wi-Fi radio map and acceleration sensor and digital campus still have a certain level of errors and a number of researches have been done to increase the positioning accuracy of the indoor positioning. If we could provide a room level accuracy, indoor location based services with current indoor positioning methods such as Wi-Fi radio map and acceleration sensors would be possible. In this paper, we propose an indoor map matching method to provide a room level accuracy based on hidden markov model.

Among indoor positioning system techniques using wireless APs, fingerprint techniques collect Mac information and reception strength of APs before performing positioning, build a radio map, and compare it with AP information collected during positioning. However, the existing Radio Map construction method has a problem in that signal interference occurs due to collisions of numerous APs depending on the indoor environment, and the signal strength search result is not always constant. Therefore, this paper compares the existing fixed radio map construction method and the variable radio map construction technique that actively analyzes and constructs the measurement area itself according to signal strength.
