  • When you move to a new home, or when you change the wallpaper or flooring of your home, office, etc., you can enjoy the joy of opening your new home with the sick house syndrome, such as the stinging smell and stinging eyes that may appear after the interior work. It is only a moment. Volatile organic compounds from building materials, adhesives, wallpaper, and paints used in new buildings or new furniture cause residents' health and discomfort in indoor life. These volatile organic compounds include benzene, toluene, acetone, and styrene, as well as the representative formaldehyde, and these substances are slowly released over a long period of time, causing acute or chronic diseases to residents. As a method for removing organic volatile substances, physical methods using adsorption, chemical methods for converting volatile substances to other substances, or a mixture of the two are mainly used. In this paper, a sustained release chlorine dioxide gel pack obtained by a method for controlling the reaction rate of a reactant and the release of a product is mixed with a zeolite adsorbent having an optimized hole diameter to adsorb and decompose and remove formaldehyde suspended in the air. I would suggest an effective method.

  • Radon is an invisible, odorless, and radioactive gas. It is formed by the disintegration of radium, which is a decay product of uranium. Some amounts of radon gas and its products are present ubiquitously in the soil, water, and air. Particularly high radon levels occur in regions of high uranium content. Although radon is permeable into indoor environment not only through geological features (bed rock and permeability) but also through the construction materials and underground water, the radiation from the geological features is generally main exposure factor. So there can be a problem in a certain space such as the underground and/or relatively poor ventilation condition. In this study, a GIS technique was used in order to investigate spatial distribution of radon measured from sub- way stations of 1 thru 8 in Seoul, Korea in 1991, 1998, 2001, and 2006. Spatial analysis was applied to reproduce the radon distribution. We utilized spatial analysis techniques such as inverse distance weighted averaging (IDW) and kriging techniques which are widely used to relate between different spatial points. To validate the results from the analyses, the jackknife technique for an uncertainty test was performed. When the number of measuring sites was less than 100 and also when the number of omitted sites increased, the kriging technique was better than IDW. On the other hand, when the number of sites was over 100, IDW technique was better than kriging technique. Thus the selection of analytical tool was affected sensitives by the analysis based on the number of measuring sites.

  • Until now, because a new product (or facility) launched in market has been retired from one year of age, we can have had ASL by stub-curve method by Iowa curve. Recently, many innovative products with important role in market like display and solar-cell etc. are more durable and, what are better, they have the constant variance in ASL because of their good quality. Of course, there are some ones like smart mobile phone with relatively big dispersion in ASL. Estimating ASL of products like display and solar-cell etc., the new approach is needed. In this paper a new method applied traditional Iowa curve with accelerated reliability test (indoor/outdoor) etc. is proposed.

  • The aging of Korea is rapidly advancing in an unprecedented rate in the world. Indoor and outdoor safety accidents involving the elderly frequently occur, with elderly population increasing. Because the physical strength of elderly is decreased, it is necessary to develop devices that aid the everyday life of the elderly to prevent safety accidents. Among many activities, the motions of standing from and sitting on a chair require much physical strength from particular body parts, which causes an overload for particular body parts. To the elderly the repeating motion of standing from and sitting down on a chair is burdensome, because they do not have enough physical strength compare to young persons. As a result the elderly could be injured or falling during standing or sitting. Therefore, the development of a lift chair that considers the problems mentioned above is necessary to prevent the safety accidents of the elderly. The study designed a non-motorized lift chair that comfortably aids the standing and sitting down motion for the use of the elderly by reflecting the anthropometric data of the Korean elderly over 65 years old. Also the design was implemented to smoothly aid the standing motion by considering the knee angle of the elderly when standing. Because the regained strength to stand from a chair is depend on the knee angle. Unlike existing lift devices, this device utilizes a tilting mechanism that does not use electric power so that the product could be composed inexpensively than existing chairs released in the market.

  • In this paper, a study of the design of a lighting optical system to form indirect light was conducted, to reduce the glare caused by the hot spot of the LED. In the case of using an LED for indoor lighting, glare is caused because of the high luminance and non-uniform luminance distribution. In particular, LED stands are located close to the user's eyes and are used for a long time, so research to reduce glare is essential. Therefore, in this paper an optical system structural study and the design of an LED stand for glare reduction were conducted. Afterward, the luminance analysis and comparison to an existing LED stand product confirmed that the reflective LED stand proposed in this paper had better performance in terms of glare.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the quality comparison of M. longissimus from 4 crossbred wild boars(wild boar ♂×Duroc ♀, 113kg, 1 barrow and 3 gilts, CWB) reared outdoor, 5 Korean native black pigs(64kg, 5 barrows, KNP) and 5 modern genotype pigs(Landrace×Yorkshire×Duroc, 114kg, 5 barrows, MGP) reared indoor. The samples were stored at 2±0.2℃ for 12 days and utilized in the quality measurement. The moisture content was significantly higher in CWB than in KNP(p<0.05), however crude fat content was significantly lower in CWB than in KNP(p<0.05). The pH value of CWB was significantly lower than that of MGP during 12 days of storage(p<0.05). Therefore the CWB showed significantly lower water-holding capacity than MGP(p<0.05). The L*, a*, b* and C* values of CWB were significantly lower than those of KNP during 12 days of storage(p<0.05), however those of CWB were significantly higher than those of MGP after 3 and 6 days of storage(p<0.05). In fatty acid composition, the CWB had higher unsaturated fatty acid including linoleic acid, arachidonic acid and lower saturated fatty acid. However, the lipid oxidation of CWB was delayed during storage compared with KNP and MGP. The aroma patterns by principal component analysis(PCA) from electronic nose was discriminately different among 3 different pork at 0 and 12 day of storage.
