Performance Analysis of TH-PPM UWB System for Positioning in Indoor Environment (TH-PPM UWB를 이용한 실내 위치인식 기법의 성능 분석)

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze the positioning technique using TH-PPM ultra wideband for indoor environment. We employed AWGN and IEEE 802.15.3a channel as a simulation environment and used to TDOA algorithm. Positioning technique using ultra wideband has high accuracy in indoor environment. From the simulation results, it is analyzed the probability of error and positioning performance for channel effects and confirmed usefulness of the proposed scheme.

Location Correction Based on Map Information for Indoor Positioning Systems (지도 정보를 반영한 옥내 측위 보정 방안)

  • An indoor location-based service cannot be realized unless the indoor positioning problem is solved. However, the cost-effective indoor positioning systems are suffering from their inaccurateness. This paper proposes a map information-based correction method for the indoor positioning systems. Using our Kalman filter with map information-based appropriate parameter values, our method estimates the track of the moving object, then it performs the Frechet Distance-based map matching on the obtained track. After that it applies our real time correction method. In order to verify efficiency of our method, we also provide our test results.

  • In this paper, Indoor Positioning System based on Wi-Fi system which is one of the key technology in LBS(Location Based Service) is proposed. The proposed system estimates distance between MS(Mobile Station) and AP(Access Point) using RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator). RSSI is affected by outlier that originate from indoor environment complexity and obstacle. In this paper, we introduce a Robust outlier Extended Kalman Filter that can ignore, real-time outlier in the observations. To demonstrate performance of proposed indoor positioning system, we used a PDA as the MS.

A Review on the Applicability of Geomagnetic Field-Based Indoor Positioning in Construction Site (지구자기장 기반 실내측위기술의 건설현장 적용 가능성 검토)

  • Despite the acuuracy, stability, and economic feasibility of geomagnetic field-based indoor positioning, its applicability in construction sites needs to be thoroughly discussed due to the issue of distortion of geomagnetic fields around ferromagnetic objects such as rebars. In this study, the possibility of applying the geomagnetic field-based indoor positioning in construction sites was reviewed through the Student's t-test after measuring the changes in geomagnetic field values depending on the presence or absence of rebars. The statistical analysis revealed that there is a high probability (over 80%) of significant changes in geomagnetic field values when measuring points are located within 60cm from the rebars. On the other hand, the probability of minimal changes in geomagnetic field values is over 90% when measuring points are located more than 60cm from the rebars. This suggests the application of geomagnetic-based indoor positioning in construction sites would be possible if the issue of distortion in geomagnetic field values near rebars within 60cm is resolved.

Study on the Beacon Signal Characteristic for Efficiency Analysis of Indoor Positioning (실내 위치 측위 효율성 분석을 위한 비콘 신호 특성 연구)

  • Recently, the activity area in the indoor space has been widening. Various types of service technologies have been developed and applied user location, tracking, spatial pattern analysis and environmental analysis in indoor space. BLE-based beacon is used for the service technology in the indoor space. Therefore, in this paper, we collected and analyzed signals for indoor positioning based on beacon. For this purpose, a module was designed to analyze the efficiency of indoor location measurement using beacon. Experimental results show that the accuracy of the measured data at close range is improved. Also, it was analyzed that the more accurate the position data is extracted without the obstacle in the indoor space.

Short-range Visible Light Positioning Based on Angle of Arrival for Smart Indoor Service

  • In visible light (VL) positioning based on angle of arrival (AOA) estimation for smart indoor service, the AOA parameters obtained at the receiver has sometimes a random and distributed angle form instead of a point angle form due to the multipath transfer of the actual visible light and short positioning distance. The AOA estimation of a VL signal with a random and parametric distributed angle form may give incorrect AOA parameter estimates, which may result in poor VL positioning performance. In this paper, we classify the AOA parameters of the received VL signal into three forms according to the actual positioning channel environment and consider the short-range VL positioning method. We propose a subspace-based AOA parameter estimation technique and a data fusion method, and analyzed the proposed method by simulation and the measurement of the real VL channel characteristics.

  • Rapid developments in wireless sensor networks have extended many applications, hence, many studies have developed wireless sensor network positioning systems for indoor environments. Among those systems, the Global Position System (GPS) is unsuitable for indoor environments due to Line-Of-Sight (LOS) limitations, while the wireless sensor network is more suitable, given its advantages of low cost, easy installation, and low energy consumption. Due to the complex settings of indoor environments and the high demands for precision, the implementation of an indoor positioning system is difficult to construct. This study adopts a low-cost positioning method that does not require additional hardware, and uses the received signal strength (RSS) values from the receiver node to estimate the distance between the test objects. Since many objects in indoor environments would attenuate the radio signals and cause errors in estimation distances, knowing the path loss exponent (PLE) in an environment is crucial. However, most studies preset a fixed PLE, and then substitute it into a radio propagation loss model to estimate the distance between the test points; such method would lead to serious errors. To address this problem, this study proposes a Path Loss Exponent Estimation Algorithm, which uses only four beacon nodes to construct a radio propagation loss model for an indoor environment, and is able to provide enhanced positioning precision, accurate positioning services, low cost, and high efficiency.

Comparison of TDOA Location Algorithms for Indoor UWB Positioning (UWB 실내 측위를 위한 TDOA 위치결정기법)

  • Most of location systems use RF signal. Because multipath is too severe at indoor environment, RF signal are usually used in outdoor positioning such as GPS. To overcome the difficulty at indoor positioning, m positioning is recently developed and is being vigorously studied. Some standardizations on UWB are in progress at IEEE 802.15 committee. In developing UWB positioning system, we should consider the synchronization of sensor network, positioning algorithm, sensor allocation, and so on. This paper presents a comparison of TDOA positioning algorithms that are widely used in location systems. Two algorithms are compared; one is derived by linearization, and the other is by analytic solution(CH algorithm). Simulation results show that the CH algorithm is superior to the linearized least square at indoor environment in that CH algorithm shows consistent positioning performance regardless of the visibility and geometry of basestations.

  • For indoor mobile robots, the performance of autonomous navigation is affected by a variety of factors. In this paper, we focus on the characteristics of indoor absolute positioning systems. Two commercially available sensor systems are experimentally tested under various conditions. Mobile robot navigation experiments were carried out, and the results show that resultant performance of navigation is highly dependent upon the characteristics of positioning systems. The limitations and characteristics of positioning systems are analyzed from both quantitative and qualitative point of view. On the basis of the analysis, the relationship between the positioning system characteristics and the controller design are presented.
