조선소 용접작업 중 오존 및 TVOCs의 노출평가와 사용 호흡보호구의 적합성 (Exposure to Ozone and TVOCs during Shipyard Welding and the Adequacy of RPE)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the exposure to ozone and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) generated during welding work at a shipyard and recommend respiratory protective equipment(RPE) adequate against these hazards. Method: Ozone was collected for about 30 minutes at two-minutes intervals using a direct reading instrument, specifically an ozone analyzer(Serinus 10, Ecotech, Australia). TVOCs were collected for about 30 minutes at three-minute intervals using a portable GC (Alpha 115, Synspec BV, the Netherlands), and were determined simultaneously by area sampling at the welding plume closest to the welder's breathing zone. The total measurements were 162 for ozone($CO_2$ welding 47, TIG 60, stick 55), and 136 for TVOCs($CO_2$ 65, TIG 50, stick 21). Based on these measurements, a literature survey was conducted to assess the adequacy of RPE. Results: Relative to Korean OEL, measurements above STEL 0.2 ppm were 23.4% for $CO_2$, 63.3% for TIG and 14.5% for stick welding. There were significant differences(p=<0.0001) among welding types. Compared with ACGIH peak exposure of 0.4 ppm for ozone, which is not applied in Korea, $CO_2$ welding exceeded it by 10.6%, TIG by 40.0% and stick by 7.3%. Although it was not feasible to compare them directly since there are no Korean OEL, TVOCs had very high levels similar to the concentrations before moving into a new apartment and about 10-20 times the indoor air quality recommendations for some individual measurements. Conclusions: As ozone removal RPE has been recommended in welding environments for a long time(Lunau, 1967), this fact was demonstrated based on the results of the on-site work environment measurements(ozone and TVOCs). In conclusion, for all welding at a shipyard, gas/vapor and particulate combination RPE are recommended. If this is not possible, it should at least be present for TIG welding.

도장처리에 따른 소나무 판재의 휘발성유기화합물 방출특성 변화 (Changes of VOCs Emission on Pine (Pinus Rigida) Board by Finishing with Different Coating Types)

  • In previous study, VOC emission characteristics of coating materials for wood finishing were conducted and results showed that eco-friendly products has about 15~46% lower TVOC emission than typical products. In this study, lower TVOC emitted coating materials were applied on pine and then changes of VOC emission characteristics from pine with treatments were determined. Non-treated pine emitted $604.7{\mu}g/m^2h$ of TVOC that contained 66% of NVOC ($399.7{\mu}g/m^2h$). However, $V_2$ finished pine showed no NVOC emission rather than AVOC emission that consisted of Toluene, Ethylbenzene, m,p-Xylene, o-Xylene, 1,2,4- Trimethylbenzene. All coating materials inhibited ${\alpha}$-Pinene emission which originally from pine, but waterborne stain ($W_1$ and $W_3$) showed lower disruption of that emission. Moreover, $W_3$/wood showed higher NVOC emission such as ${\alpha}$-Terpinol, Terpinen-4-ol which are known as antioxidant substrates. Based on results, VOC emission characteristic of pine was significantly affected by coating materials with negatively in terms of ${\alpha}$-Pinene emission or positively in terms of NVOC emission. Therefore, coating material is important factor for indoor air quality when it would apply on wood products. For the future study, VOC emission characteristic of coated wood will be conducted continuously.

경기도 소재 고등학교 급식소의 위생·안전관리와 작업구역별 공기 품질 간의 관련성 (Relationship between Air Quality of Functional Areas and Hygiene Safety Management Performance in High School Foodservices in Gyeonggi Province)

  • The study examined evaluated the sanitation management state of the high school foodservice operations, as measured by temperature, humidity and airborne bacteria concentration in functional areas and further identified their relationships. Data were collected from 26 high school foodservices in Gyeonggi Province. Statistical analyses were conducted with the SPSS program using descriptive analysis and spearman's correlation. The sanitation management performances in high school foodservice scored 86.85 out of 100 points and showed higher scores in the dimensions of preparation and storing management (17.85/20 points), operation management (17.78/20 points), and cooking utensil management (17.62/20 points), while the dimensions of cross contamination management as well as personal hygiene management needed action plans for prompt improvement. The airborne bacteria concentration was highest in the dining area (179.2 CFU/plate), and requiring action plans for improvement. The relative humidity in functional areas ranged from 66.5% in the receiving area to 74.4% (dish-washing area) and the temperature of the preparation area showed an average of $25.1^{\circ}C$ with the highest of $35.4^{\circ}C$ in the dish-washing area. In terms of the relationships among airborne bacteria, temperature, and humidity, the concentration of airborne bacteria was negatively correlated with and temperature in the dish-washing area (r= -0.693, P<0.05), and no other significances were shown in the other areas.

서울시 환경보건정책 로드맵 수립 (Process and Results of Seoul Metropolitan Government's Environmental Health Policy Road Map)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to introduce the establishment process and results of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's road map on environmental health policy. Methods: The process consisted of expert group meetings, civic participation, research, and questionnaire survey for priority environmental health policy agenda items in Seoul. Results: The announced vision for the environmental health policy was "a healthy environment, safety in Seoul". This policy was established in order to define environment health policy initiatives for a period of five years with an aim to protect Seoul citizens' health from hazardous environmental factors. The resulting Seoul environmental health policy consisted of four areas and 16 key agenda items. The four areas were "Protection for children against hazardous materials", "Enhancement of health and safety of all", "Carcinogen-free and endocrine-disrupting chemical-free Seoul (reducing environmental exposure to hazardous materials), and "Establish the foundation of environmental health policy". Sixteen key agenda items include the enhancement of management of spaces for children, certification of environmental health status at schools, establishment of a unit responsible for the environmental health of children, strengthening environmental health management for susceptible populations (children, the aged, and the socioeconomically vulnerable), management of hazardous materials, physical hazardous factors (noise, radiation, etc.), indoor air quality, and the enhancement of monitoring, research, and regulation of environment health. Conclusion: The Seoul Metropolitan Government established an environmental health policy road map for a five-year period (2013-2017). To implement this environmental health policy, budget allocation, and detailed execution plans are required.

벽지용 천연마늘접착제의 제조 및 접착성능 (Preparation and Bonding Properties of Natural Garlic Adhesives for Wallpaper)

  • 최근 실내공간에서의 안전성을 확보하기 위해 유해물질의 방출이 없는 천연재료의 사용이 요구됨에 따라 음식재료인 마늘을 이용한 도배용 천연마늘접착제의 제조와 그 성능에 관하여 검토하였다. 마늘을 이용한 천연접착제는 생마늘을 물로 추출하여 탄수화물과 단백질을 분리 및 농축하는 방법에 의해 제조가 가능하였다. 제조한 천연마늘접착제의 접착성능은 불휘발분의 양에 의해 크게 영향 받았으며, 최적의 불휘발분은 60% 전후였다. 제조한 천연마늘 수지의 특성은 불휘발분 62%, 밀도 $1.3g/cm^3$, 점도 2,789 mPa s, pH 6.6이었다. 또한, 마늘 접착제의 접착성능은 KS의 기준을 크게 상회하였으며, 방부제의 첨가 없이도 마늘이 가지고 있는 항균성을 유지하고 있었으며, 특히 휘발성유기화합물과 폼알데하이드의 방산이 거의 없는 매우 안전한 천연접착제로서의 이용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

활성탄소 입도에 따른 산화마그네슘 경화체의 공극특성과 흡착성능 평가 (Pore Characterisitics and Adsorption Performance Evaluation of Magnesium Oxide Matrix by Active Carbon Particle Size)

  • 라돈가스는 암석이나 토양 등에 존재하는 자연 방사성 물질인 우라늄이 붕괴할 때 발생하는 무색, 무취, 무미의 가스이다. 인체가 연간 노출되는 방사선의 85%는 자연 방사선에 의한 것이고, 그 중 50%가 라돈가스이다. 미국 환경보호청(EPA)의 조사결과에 의하면, 라돈가스에 장시간 노출될 경우 흡연자는 1,000명 중 62명, 비흡연자는 1,000명 중 7명이 폐암 발병률에 노출된다. 이러한 라돈가스의 위해성을 저감하고자 활성탄소를 사용하여 경화체를 제작하여 그에 대한 공극 특성과 라돈가스 저감 특성에 대한 실험을 진행하였다. 활성탄소를 활용하였을 경우, 측정기간이 길어질수록 라돈가스 농도는 급격한 저감과 그래프 상의 변화를 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 활성탄소의 재료적 특성 중 하나인 공극 분포와 미세공 특성을 파악할 수 있다.

지하시설 VOCs 제거를 위한 메탈 필터의 흡착기능부여 연구 (A Study on the Application of Adsorption Function in Metal Filter for the Removal of VOCs in Underground Facilities)

  • 실내공기질 중 지하시설은 휘발성유기화합물(VOC, volatile organic compound)의 처리가 미흡한 실정이며, 이를 환기와 같은 확산법이 아닌 오염물질 저감하기 위하여 다양한 제조, 활성화법을 이용해 메탈 필터에 흡착성을 부여한 제올라이트 코팅 흡착 필터소재를 제조하였다. 그 결과, 메탈폼 지지체 대비 약 2~20배 이상 흡착 성능의 증진을 확인하였으며 이는 기공의 증진에 기반함을 SEM 분석으로 확인하였다. 또한 리그닌을 첨가함에 따라 13.95 mg/g의 흡착 성능을 확보하였으며, 세척 후에도 평균 13.25 mg/g의 유사한 흡착 성능을 확보하여 높은 내구성을 가진 흡착 필터소재를 제조하였음을 확인하였다. 개발된 흡착 필터소재는 지하시설 내 기계적 환기로의 농도 저감이 아닌 근본적으로 VOCs를 제어할 수 있는 해결방법으로 제시할 수 있을 것으로 판단하였다.

커피 찌꺼기 혼합물을 활용한 라돈 저감 효과 분석 (Analysis of Radon Reduction Effect Using Coffee Waste Mixture)

  • 커피는 국내뿐만 아니라 전 세계인들에게 인기 있는 음료로서 그 소비는 점점 늘어나는 추세에 있다. 커피 소비 증가는 커피를 추출하고 발생되는 커피 찌꺼기 또한 증가하고 있으며, 다양한 분야로 재활용을 시도하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 재활용 방법들은 재활용 과정들이 복잡하고 전문적인 기술을 필요로 한다. 하지만 본 연구에서는 커피 찌꺼기, 한천분말, 가루풀을 적정 비율로 배합하여 시멘트 건축마감 재료로 활용하였다. 본 재활용 방법은 제조 방법이 간단하고 시멘트벽에서 방출되는 라돈을 1회 바름으로 2.5시간, 2회 바름으로 3.9시간을 지연시켜 실내 공기질을 향상시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 커피 찌꺼기 혼합물을 바른 후 건조과정에서 발생하는 균열을 매우기 위하여 2회 바름으로서 미관적인 완성도와 벽면에서 커피 찌꺼기가 탈락되는 것을 방지할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

부산지역 지하역사의 최근 3년간(2015~2017년) PM10과 PM2.5 농도 특성 (Characteristics of PM10 and PM2.5 Concentrations at Subway Stations in Busan for 3 years (2015~2017))

  • This research investigated the characteristics of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations at the main subway stations in Busan. Annual mean $PM_{10}$ concentrations at the Seomyeon 1- waiting room and platform were $51.3{\mu}g/m^3$ and $47.5{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively, and the annual $PM_{2.5}$ concentration at the Seomyeon 1- platform was $28.8{\mu}g/m^3$. $PM_{2.5}$/$PM_{10}$ ratio at Seomyeon 1-platform and Dongnae station were 0.58 and 0.53, respectively. Diurnal variation of $PM_{10}$ concentration at subway stations in Busan was categorized into four types, depending on the number of peaks and the times at which the peaks occurred. Unlike the areas outside of the subway stations which reported maximum $PM_{10}$ concentration mostly in spring across the entire locations, the interiors of the subway stations reported the maximum $PM_{10}$ concentration in spring, winter, and even summer, depending on their location. $PM_{10}$ concentration was highest on Saturday and lowest on Sunday. The numbers of days when $PM_{10}$ concentration exceeded $100{\mu}g/m^3$ and $80{\mu}g/m^3$ per day over the last three years at the subway stations in Busan were 36 and 239, respectively. The findings of this research are expected to enhace the understanding of the fine particle characteristics at subway stations in Busan and be useful for developing a strategy for controlling urban indoor air quality.

Effect of aerobically treated manure on odorous material emissions from a swine finishing barn equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system

  • Objective: This study was conducted to determine reduction of various odorous materials from a swine farm equipped with a continuous pit recirculation system (CPRS) with aerobically treated liquid manure. Methods: The CPRS is used in swine farms in South Korea, primarily to improve air quality in pig houses. In this study, CPRS consists of a manure aerobic treatment system and a fit recirculation system; the solid fraction is separated and composted, whereas the aerobically treated liquid fraction (290.0%±21.0% per day of total stored swine slurry) is continuously returned to the pit. Four confinement pig barns in three piggery farms were used; two were equipped with CPRS and the other two operated a slurry pit under the slatted floor. Results: All chemical contents of slurry pit manure in the control were greater than those of slurry pit manure in the CRPS treatment (p<0.05). Electrical conductivity and pH contents did not differ among treatments. The biological oxygen demand of the slurry pit treatment was greater than that of the other treatments (p<0.05). Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen contents of the slurry pit treatment were greater than those of other treatments (p<0.05). Odor intensity of the CPRS treatment was lower than that of the control at indoor, exhaust, and outside sampling points (p<0.05). The temperature and carbon dioxide of the CPRS treatment in the pig barn was significantly lower than those of control (p<0.05). All measured odorous material contents of the CPRS group were significantly lower than those of the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The CPRS application in pig farms is considered a good option as it continuously reduces the organic load of animal manure and lowers the average odorant concentration below the threshold of detecting odorous materials.
