Influence of Self-Construal on Choice of Overseas Travel Product Type

  • Purpose: Understanding which product types of overseas travel (free independent travel vs. package travel) consumers will choose is one of the key issues of marketing and consumer behavior in travel agency management. Prior studies on overseas travel type preferences mainly focused on comparing regional differences (e.g., Asian vs. Westerner, or Korean vs. Australian, or Korean vs. Japanese, or American, French, Italian vs. Japanese) influencing the choice of overseas travel type. Another researchers focused on comparing cultural differences (e.g., individualism vs. collectivism, or individualistic culture vs. collectivistic culture), subcultural difference (e.g., acculturation; Koreans living in Republic of Korea vs. Koreans living in Australia), travel lifestyle, and socio-demographics (e.g., age, gender, income level, education level, marital status, occupation etc.). However, there are few studies that identify individual psychological differences (i.e., individual psychological differences within the same culture) influencing the choice of overseas travel type. Self-construal is a psychological factors that greatly influences choice behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of self-construal as an antecedent variable influencing choice of overseas travel product type. Research design, data and methodology: To achieve the purpose of this study, the questionnaire survey method was used. Self-construal items composed of independent self-construal items and interdependent self-construal items. Product types of overseas travel were free independent travel (FIT) type versus package travel type. In this study, the correlation coefficient between independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal was nonsignificant. It meant that the relationship between independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal was orthogonal. Therefore it was analyzed that independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal separately. Reliability analysis, factor analysis, and logistic regression analysis (controlling gender and age) was used as the data analysis method. Results: According to the results of this study, the stronger independent self-construal, the more preference for the free independent travel type rather than package travel, and the stronger interdependent self-construal, the more preference for the package travel type rather than free independent travel. Conclusions: Self-construal is an antecedent variable influencing the choice of travel type. Travel agencies must consider the consumer's self-construal (independent self-construal vs. interdependent self-construal) before planning and designing overseas travel products.

한국사회의 세대갈등 : 권력.이념.문화갈등을 중심으로 (Generational Conflicts in Korea : Power, Ideological and Cultural Conflicts)

  • 이 논문의 목적은 한국사회의 세대갈등을 권력갈등, 이념갈등, 문화갈등으로 구분하여 갈등 형성의 배경과 실태를 분석하고 그 함의를 논의하는 데 있다. 실태 분석을 위하여 관공서의 집합 자료와 경험적 연구결과들이 활용되었다. 우선, 세대간 권력갈등의 핵심은 권력 이양시기를 둘러싼 충돌에 있다. 세대간 권력갈등을 의회 권력에 국한시켜 볼 때, 정권교체기의 이념적 지향의 부침과는 무관하게 젊은 의원들의 비율이 꾸준히 증가하는 저(低) 연령화 추세가 지속되고 있었다. 이러한 세대교체 추세는 당분간 다른 영역에서도 유지될 것으로 보인다. 다음으로, 세대간 이념갈등은 2002년 대선 전 후 극대화되었으나 04년 총선 이래 점차 완화되었다. 그러나 조건의 변화에 따라 일정한 계기가 주어지면 다시 활성화될 수 있을 것이다. 마지막으로, 문화 격차의 견지에서 볼 때 세대균열의 깊은 골은 대략 출생시점 1970년경을 중심으로 형성되었다. 문화갈등의 축을 성장주의 대 소비주의, 집단주의 대 개인주의, 권위주의 대 탈권위주의로 설정하여 갈등의 배경과 실태를 검토했다. 세 유형의 갈등 중 문화갈등의 역기능에 주목해야 한다. 세대간 문화격차 확대는 상호 의사소통을 방해하며 상호 교류와 공동 활동 기피라는 결과를 낳을 수 있기 때문이다. 문화갈등 완화를 위해, 사회 제 부문의 부조리와 비리 척결 그리고 세대 통합 프로그램을 활용하는 방안 등이 제시되었다.

바디이미지 연구(제1보): 한.미 여성의 이상적 미, 바디이미지와 외모행동에 관한 연구 (Body Image I: A Comparison of Ideal Beauty, Body Image, and Appearance Management Behaviors Among Korean and American Women)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 사회.문화적 관점에서 한.미 여성의 이상적인 미, 바디이미지, 그리고 외모행동을 비교조사 하는데 있다. Open-Ended Questions에 의한 연구 결과, 이상적인 미로 미국여성이 \"키크고 마른 신체 매력성\"을 추구한 반면, 한국여성은 \"내적인 미\"와 \"서구적인 신체 매력성\"을 추구하는 것으로 나타났다. 이상적인 미를 추구하기 위해 미국여성은 주로 신체의 하체부분, 한국여성은 얼굴부분을 많이 가꾸고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 외모행동으로는 한국여성은 화장이나 피부관리 등에, 미국여성은 excercise나 다이어트 등을 많이 하고 있었다. 사회.문화적 이상적인 미에 비교해 볼 때 두 집단 모두 자신의 외모에 대해 만족하지 못하는 편으로 나타났다. 또한 두 나라 집단의 여성들은 각 나라마다 사회.문화적 이상적인 미가 각각 존재해야 함에도 불구하고 현재에는 이상적 미의 기준이 문화에 관계없이 동일한 편이라고 응답을 하였다. 본 연구에서는 사회.문화적 집단주의와 개인주의 개념을 토대로 이러한 연구결과들이 논의되어 진다.주의 개념을 토대로 이러한 연구결과들이 논의되어 진다.

가족주의 가치관과 노부모 부양에 관한 연구 - 기혼 여성의 시가와 친가에 대한 비 교- (A Study of Familism and Family Support for the Aged)

  • The aim of present study was to explore there were relationships among familism(collectivism vs. individualism), filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle-aged women towards parents. The respondents were 552 married women in their thirties, forties and fifties. OK Sun-hwa(1989)'s Seelbach (1978)'s, Cicirelli (1983)'s and Chang Sun-ju(1989)'s scale were utilized to tap the familism, filial responsibility, and helping behavior of the middle age daughter and daughter in low respectively. The major results of the study were summerized as follows; 1) Married women perceived relatively high levels of familism and filial responsibility and a moderate level of helping towards their parents and in-law parents as well. Among the demographic variables, education, income and age of the married daughters and daughters-in-law were found to be correlated to both familism and filial responsibility of support for their parents, Also, education and age were negatively related to helping behaviors. 2) Marred women reported similar levels of filial responsibility of support towards parents in law and their own parents, However significant difference were found between the amounts of helping behavior towards parents-in-law and their own parents. 3) Regression analysis revealed that living arrangement(living with parents or not ), the level of filial responsibility , and education level provided to be significant predictors on the helping behavior towards parent-in-law explaining 46% of the total variance. On the other hand, filial responsibility , living pattern, and income level for the parents were powerflu in predicting helping behavior towards their own parents accounting 24% of the total explained variance. 4) A path analysis model indicated that while educational level and living arrangement influenced directly to helping behavior toward parent-in-law, living arrangement, income level of parents and familism were directly associated with helping behavior for parents of their own. Therefor , helping behavior of the middles aged women was significantly mediated by familism and filial responsibility for support towards both parents-in-law and their own parents.

문화성향과 SNS 사용 간의 관계: 오프라인 문화성향의 효과를 통제한 위계적 회귀분석 (Collectivistic-Individualistic Tendency and its Relationship to SNS Usage: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis Controlling for Collectivistic-Individualistic Tendency in Offline Environment)

  • 본 연구는 문화성향에 따른 SNS의 사용 및 중독과의 관련성을 알아보고자 고안되었다. SNS 사용에 영향을 미치는 성별, 성격, 연령의 개인 내적 변인의 효과를 통제하고자 하였으며, 또한 SNS상에서의 문화성향과 오프라인상의 문화성향은 일치하지 않을 수 있기 때문에, 두 문화성향을 독립적으로 측정하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 혈족-비혈족 맥락으로 SNS상의 문화성향을 측정하는 문항들을 새로 개발하였다. 13~15세의 청소년 253명과 18~25세의 성인 246명을 연구대상자로 모집하여 총 499명의 자료가 분석되었다. 분석 결과 SNS상에서의 개인주의는 SNS 사용량 및 중독 경향성과 정적인 상관관계를 보여주었다. 또한 남성에 비해서 여성이 SNS 사용 시간과 SNS 중독 경향성이 높았으며, 청소년에 비해서 성인의 사용 기간 및 시간이 높았으나 중독 경향성에는 유의미한 차이가 없었다. 상관분석 결과 SNS 문화성향과 오프라인 문화성향 간의 상관은 높은 편이 아니었으며, 성별, 성격, 연령 및 오프라인 문화성향 변인의 효과를 통제한 후에도 SNS 혈족 개인주의 성향은 SNS 중독 경향성을 유의미하게 예측하였다. 이러한 결과는 SNS 사용과 중독을 예측하는 데 있어서는 SNS 맥락에 적절한 문화성향을 측정할 필요가 있음을 시사하며, SNS 중독에 있어서 SNS 혈족 개인주의가 주요 변인이 될 수 있다는 가능성을 보여주었다.

  • Recently, due to the globalization of the IT(Information Technology) market, devices and systems designed in one country are used in other countries as well. This phenomenon is becoming the key factor for increased interest on cross-cultural, or cross-national, research within the IT area. However, as the IT market is becoming bigger and more globalized, a great number of IT practitioners are having difficulty in designing and developing devices or systems which can provide optimal experience. This is because not only tangible factors such as language and a country's economic or industrial power affect the user experience of a certain device or system but also invisible and intangible factors as well. Among such invisible and intangible factors, the cultural characteristics of users from different countries may affect the user experience of certain devices or systems because cultural characteristics affect how they understand and interpret the devices or systems. In other words, when users evaluate the quality of overall user experience, the cultural characteristics of each user act as a perceptual lens that leads the user to focus on a certain elements of experience. Therefore, there is a need within the IT field to consider cultural characteristics when designing or developing certain devices or systems and plan a strategy for localization. In such an environment, existing IS studies identify the culture with the country, emphasize the importance of culture in a national level perspective, and hypothesize that users within the same country have same cultural characteristics. Under such assumptions, these studies focus on the moderating effects of cultural characteristics on a national level within a certain theoretical framework. This has already been suggested by cross-cultural studies conducted by scholars such as Hofstede(1980) in providing numerical research results and measurement items for cultural characteristics and using such results or items as they increase the efficiency of studies. However, such national level culture has its limitations in forecasting and explaining individual-level behaviors such as voluntary device or system usage. This is because individual cultural characteristics are the outcome of not only the national culture but also the culture of a race, company, local area, family, and other groups that are formulated through interaction within the group. Therefore, national or nationally dominant cultural characteristics may have its limitations in forecasting and explaining the cultural characteristics of an individual. Moreover, past studies in psychology suggest a possibility that there exist different cultural characteristics within a single individual depending on the subject being measured or its context. For example, in relation to individual vs. collective characteristics, which is one of the major cultural characteristics, an individual may show collectivistic characteristics when he or she is with family or friends but show individualistic characteristics in his or her workplace. Therefore, this study acknowledged such limitations of past studies and conducted a research within the framework of 'theoretically integrated model of user satisfaction and emotional attachment', which was developed through a former study, on how the effects of different experience elements on emotional attachment or user satisfaction are differentiated depending on the individual cultural characteristics related to a system or device usage. In order to do this, this study hypothesized the moderating effects of four cultural dimensions (uncertainty avoidance, individualism vs, collectivism, masculinity vs. femininity, and power distance) as suggested by Hofstede(1980) within the theoretically integrated model of emotional attachment and user satisfaction. Statistical tests were then implemented on these moderating effects through conducting surveys with users of four digital devices (mobile phone, MP3 player, LCD TV, and refrigerator) in three countries (US, Germany, and Russia). In order to explain and forecast the behavior of personal device or system users, individual cultural characteristics must be measured, and depending on the target device or system, measurements must be measured independently. Through this suggestion, this study hopes to provide new and useful perspectives for future IS research.
