The fabrication process and the structure of PIN semiconductor detectors have been designed optimally by simulation for doping concentration and width of p+ layer, impurities re-contribution due to annealing and the current distribution due to guard ring at the sliced edges. The characteristics to radiation response has been also simulated in terms of Monte Carlo Method. The device has been fabricated on n type, $400\;{\Omega}cm$, orientation <100>, Floating-Zone silicon wafer using the simulation results. The leakage current density of $0.7nA/cm^2/100{\mu}m$ is achieved by this process. The good linearity of radiation response to Cs-137 was kept within the exposure ranges between 5 mR/h and 25 R/h. This proposed process could be applied for fabricating a PIN semiconductor detector for measuring individual dose.

Objectives We aimed to assess the radiation exposure for epidemiologic investigation in residents exposed to radiation from roads that were accidentally found to be contaminated with radioactive cesium-137 ($^{137}Cs$) in Seoul. Methods Using information regarding the frequency and duration of passing via the $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads or residing/working near the roads from the questionnaires that were obtained from 8875 residents and the measured radiation doses reported by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, we calculated the total cumulative dose of radiation exposure for each person. Results Sixty-three percent of the residents who responded to the questionnaire were considered as ever-exposed and 1% of them had a total cumulative dose of more than 10 mSv. The mean (minimum, maximum) duration of radiation exposure was 4.75 years (0.08, 11.98) and the geometric mean (minimum, maximum) of the total cumulative dose was 0.049 mSv (<0.001, 35.35) in the exposed. Conclusions An individual exposure assessment was performed for an epidemiological study to estimate the health risk among residents living in the vicinity of $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads. The average exposure dose in the exposed people was less than 5% of the current guideline.
This study was objected to evaluate clinical progressions about both the degree of pain relief and the occurrence of morphine tolerance while the epidural analgesia with low dose of morphine, bupivacaine and antidepressant continued repeatedly at every 5 day intervals of the constant-rate infusion(0.5 ml/hr, 60 ml capacity). The subjects were divided to 56 cancer and 36 non-cancer patients who failed to respond to palliative treatments. Before the relief of pain, the pain severity was moderate(10%) and severe(90%). The dose escalation of morphine noted to 11(20%)patients in cancer pain and to one(5%) case only in non-cancer. During the epidural analgesia, the effect of pain relief was moderate(11%) and good(89%). It suggest that the morphine tolerance may be reduced to some degree such as an initial minimum dose of epidural morphine with local anesthetic and antidepressant should be adjusted on an individual basis using the constant-rate infusor, even though rapid dose escalation occurrs in some patients who the diseases progress over a short period of time.

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical feasibility of knowledge-based planning (KBP) for volumetric-modulated arc radiotherapy (VMAT) in spine stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). Methods: Forty-eight VMAT plans for spine SBRT was studied. Two planning target volumes (PTVs) were defined for simultaneous integrated boost: PTV for boost (PTV-B: 27 Gy/3fractions) and PTV elective (PTV-E: 24 Gy/3fractions). The expert VMAT plans were manually generated by experienced planners. Twenty-six plans were used to train the KBP model using Varian RapidPlan. With the trained KBP model each KBP plan was automatically generated by an individual with little experience and compared with the expert plan (closed-loop validation). Twenty-two plans that had not been used for KBP model training were also compared with the KBP results (open-loop validation). Results: Although the minimal dose of PTV-B and PTV-E was lower and the maximal dose was higher than those of the expert plan, the difference was no larger than 0.7 Gy. In the closed-loop validation, D1.2cc, D0.35cc, and Dmean of the spinal cord was decreased by 0.9 Gy, 0.6 Gy, and 0.9 Gy, respectively, in the KBP plans (P<0.05). In the open-loop validation, only Dmean of the spinal cord was significantly decreased, by 0.5 Gy (P<0.05). Conclusions: The dose coverage and uniformity for PTV was slightly worse in the KBP for spine SBRT while the dose to the spinal cord was reduced, but the differences were small. Thus, inexperienced planners could easily generate a clinically feasible plan for spine SBRT by using KBP.
Background: As an important detecting device, TLD is a widely used in the radiation monitoring. It is essential for us to study the property of detecting element. The aim of this study is to calculate the thermo-luminescence efficiency of TL elements. Materials and Methods: A batch of thermo-luminescence elements were irradiated by the filtered X-ray beams of average energies in the range 40-200 kVp, 662 keV $^{137}Cs$ gamma rays and then the amounts of lights were measured by the TL reader. The deposition energies in elements were calculated by theory formula and Monte Carlo simulation. The unit absorbed dose in elements by photons with different energies corresponding to the amounts of lights was calculated, which is called the thermo luminescent efficiency (${\eta}^{(E)}$). Because of the amounts of lights can be calculated by the absorbed dose in elements multiply ${\eta}^{(E)}$, the ${\eta}^{(E)}$ can be calculated by the experimental data (the amounts of lights) divided by absorbed dose. Results and Discussion: The deviation of simulation results compared with theoretical calculation results were less than 5%, so the absorbed dose in elements was calculated by simulation results in here. The change range of ${\eta}^{(E)}$ value, relative to 662 keV $^{137}Cs$ gamma rays, is about 30% in the energy range of 33 keV to 662 keV, is in accordance by the comparison with relevant foreign literatures. Conclusion: The ${\eta}^{(E)}$ values can be used for updating the amounts of lights that are got by the direct ratio assumed relations with deposition energy in TL elements, which can largely reduce the error of calculation results of the amounts of lights. These data can be used for the design of individual dosimeter which used TLD-2000 thermo-luminescence elements, also have a certain reference value for manufacturer to improve the energy-response performance of TL elements by formulation adjustment.

Objective : This study was carried out to evaluate the liver toxicities of Wild Aconiti Tuber decoction. Methods : The amounts of aconitine in the methanol extract of Wild Aconiti Tuber was measured by HPLC. Safeties was studied by LD50 in mice. Liver toxicities were evaluated histologically and by CBC, blood chemistry after 2 weeks of 0.4g/kg/day clinical dosage oral administrations in rat. Results : 1. The amounts of aconitine in the methanol extract of Wild Aconiti Tuber is $1.697{\pm}0.052mg/g$. But aconitine was not detected in the water decoction of Wild Aconiti Tuber. 2. To evaluate LD50 and safeties of Wild Aconiti Tuber decoction, ICR mice were given high dose of 2, 5, 10g/kg for single time and were observed for 2 weeks. There were no dead animal and abnormal clinical sign and no abnormalities at the autopsy. So, LD50 was admitted to higher than 10g/kg. 3. After 2 weeks of 0.4g/kg/day clinical dosage oral administrations in rat, there was no significant change in the CBC and blood chemistry. 4. In the liver tissues of clinical dosage, mitotic figures, apoptosis and individual cell death were observed, but clear liver toxicities like fatty liver or necrosis were not observed. the liver tissues of high dose in mice, hydropic changes were getting severe as dose grows. Conclusions : According to the results, though aconitine was not detected in the Wild Aconiti Tuber decoction, 0.4g/kg/day 2 weeks p. o (clinical dosage) group showed weak changes in the liver tissues and high dose group showed liver toxicities like hydropic changes.
The intercomparison exercise on internal dose assessment has been carried out for the purpose of the evaluation for harmonization of internal dosimetry between the nuclear-related institutes in Korea. The exercises of 9 items on internal dose assessment have been developed for the unknown internal dosimetric parameters such as the intake pathway, absorption type, AMAD, and intake time of a radionuclide. Solutions to these exercises were reported by 7 participants from 5 institutes. The range of the ratio between the individual values and the geometric mean value of the evaluated doses for the exercises was $5.75{\times}10^{-4}$ ~ 9.81. But without the extreme partial solution, the range of the ratio was 0.216 ~ 3.12.
Background: This study examined the detection limit of thyroid screening monitoring conducted at the time of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in 2011 using a Monte Carlo simulation. Materials and Methods: We calculated the detection limit of a NaI(Tl) survey meter to measure 131I accumulation in the thyroid gland of children. Mathematical phantoms of 1- and 5-year-old children were developed in the simulation of the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System code. Contamination of the body surface with eight radionuclides found after the FDNPP accident was assumed to have been deposited on the neck and shoulder area. Results and Discussion: The detection limit was calculated as a function of ambient dose rate. In the case of 40 Bq/cm2 contamination on the body surface of the neck, the present simulations showed that residual thyroid radioactivity corresponding to thyroid dose of 100 mSv can be detected within 21 days after intake at the ambient dose rate of 0.2 µSv/hr and within 11 days in the case of 2.0 µSv/hr. When a time constant of 10 seconds was used at the dose rate of 0.2 µSv/hr, the estimated survey meter output error was 5%. Evaluation of the effect of individual differences in the location of the thyroid gland confirmed that the measured value would decrease by approximately 6% for a height difference of ±1 cm and increase by approximately 65% for a depth of 1 cm. Conclusion: In the event of a nuclear disaster, simple measurements carried out using a NaI(Tl) scintillation survey meter remain effective for assessing 131I intake. However, it should be noted that the presence of short-half-life radioactive materials on the body surface affects the detection limit.
A nonlinear mixed effects model is mainly used to analyze repeated measurement data in various fields. A nonlinear mixed effects model consists of two stages: the first-stage individual-level model considers intra-individual variation and the second-stage population model considers inter-individual variation. The individual-level model, which is the first stage of the nonlinear mixed effects model, estimates the parameters of the nonlinear regression model. It is the same as the general nonlinear regression model, and usually estimates parameters using the least squares estimation method. However, the least squares estimation method may have a problem that the estimated value of the parameters and standard errors become extremely large if the assumed nonlinear function is not explicitly revealed by the data. In this paper, a new estimation method is proposed to solve this problem by introducing the ridge regression method recently proposed in the nonlinear regression model into the first-stage individual-level model of the nonlinear mixed effects model. The performance of the proposed estimator is compared with the performance with the standard estimator through a simulation study. The proposed methodology is also illustrated using quantitative high throughput screening data obtained from the US National Toxicology Program.
Essential oils are increasingly of interest for use as novel drugs acting as antimicrobial and antiviral agents. In the present study, we report the in vitro antiviral activities of 29 essential oils, extracted from Chinese indigenous aromatic plants, against the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Of these essential oils, those oils from ginger, lemon, tea tree, tangerine peel, artemisia, and lemongrass effected a more than 50% inhibition of TMV at 100 ${\mu}g/ml$. In addition, the mode of antiviral action of the active essential oils was also determined. Essential oils isolated from artemisia and lemongrass possessed potent inactivation and curative effects in vivo and had a directly passivating effect on TMV infection in a dose-dependent manner. However, all other active essential oils exhibited a moderate protective effect in vivo. The chemical constitutions of the essential oils from ginger, lemon, tea tree, tangerine peel, artemisia, and lemongrass were identified by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major components of these essential oils were ${\alpha}$-zingiberene (35.21%), limonene (76.25%), terpinen-4-ol (41.20%), limonene (80.95%), 1,8-cineole (27.45%), and terpinolene (10.67%). The curative effects of 10 individual compounds from the active essential oils on TMV infection were also examined in vivo. The compounds from citronellal, limonene, 1,8-cineole, and ${\alpha}$-zingiberene effected a more than 40% inhibition rate for TMV infection, and the other compounds demonstrated moderate activities at 320 ${\mu}g/ml$ in vivo. There results indicate that the essential oils isolated from artemisia and lemongrass, and the individual compound citronellal, have the potential to be used as an effective alternative for the treatment of tobacco plants infected with TMV under greenhouse conditions.
