Evaluation Index of Rural Development for Producing Potential Value of Rural Regions on a Commercial Scale (농촌의 잠재적 가치에 의한 농촌지역개발 평가지표 연구)

  • The purpose of this research was to develop evaluation index of regional development for producing potential values of rural regions besides agriculture on a commercial scale. Rural regions have potential values such as preserved nature and spatial advantages and so on. For regional development, potential values should be synthetically evaluated by objective and standard index for supporting decision. For evaluation of plural functions of rural regions, evaluation index of rural regions was developed based on rural amenity. Applicability of evaluation index was studied using GIS and natural break method.

A Novel Reversible Data Hiding Scheme for VQ-Compressed Images Using Index Set Construction Strategy

  • In this paper, we propose a novel reversible data hiding scheme in the index tables of the vector quantization (VQ) compressed images based on index set construction strategy. On the sender side, three index sets are constructed, in which the first set and the second set include the indices with greater and less occurrence numbers in the given VQ index table, respectively. The index values in the index table belonging to the second set are added with prefixes from the third set to eliminate the collision with the two derived mapping sets of the first set, and this operation of adding prefixes has data hiding capability additionally. The main data embedding procedure can be achieved easily by mapping the index values in the first set to the corresponding values in the two derived mapping sets. The same three index sets reconstructed on the receiver side ensure the correctness of secret data extraction and the lossless recovery of index table. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • Nowadays, it is an important task to find extremal values on any molecular descriptor with respect to different graph parameters. The Sombor index is a novel topological molecular descriptor introduced by Gutman in 2021. The research on determining extremal values for the Sombor index of a graph is very popular recently. In this paper, we present the maximum Sombor index of bicyclic graphs with given matching number. Furthermore, we identify the corresponding extremal bicyclic graphs.

Effect of Foulant Characteristics on Membrane Fouling Index (오염물질의 특성이 막오염 지수에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of foulant characteristics on Membrane fouling index such as Silt Density Index (SDI) and Modified Fouling Index (MFI). A linear relationship was found relating the fouling index (both SDI and MFI) on particle concentration, but fouling index values were nonlinearly (exponentially) with increasing organic concentration. When organic matter was the primary cause of fouling, the MFI was not accurately predicted due to internal fouling such as pore adsorption. The fouling index was determined mainly by particle characteristics when both particle and organic coexisted in the feed water. This observation was attributed to lessening of organic pore adsorption by particle cake layer formed on the membrane surface. Bench-scale actual fouling experiments demonstrated that permeate flux declines much faster with feed water containing particles than organic matters although fouling potential predicted by SDI values were identical, indicating that the accurate prediction of fouling potential requires the development of fouling index reflecting different foulant characteristics.

  • This study was motivated by the purpose of improving the O-Index, currently used to quantify water tasty. The authors first develop the M-Index after normalizing Ca, K, and $SiO_{2}$ concentrations in the spring water, in that the concentrations are subject to their log-normal distributions. The M-Index is then compared with the O-Index based on the results of sensory tests, revealing that sensory tests are correlated with the M-Index much more than the O-Index. Furthermore, the developed index is applied to evaluate water sampled from 53 springs in Korea. It is concluded that water, sampled from five most famous springs, has high values in M-Index. In addition, water, collected from springs that are relatively accessible, contains low values, and thus is expected not to tasty good.

  • A sediment quality index (SQI) and a mean sediment quality guideline quotient (M-SQGQ) were applied for the assessment of sediment quality in Masan Bay, Korea where metals and organic pollutants are of concern. The SQI was calculated by two functions, 'scope' (the number of variables that do not meet guideline objective) and 'amplitude' (the magnitude by which variables exceed guideline objective), with six different sediment quality guideline values from Canada, USA and Australia/New Zealand. Categorization of sediment quality was on the basis of SQI scores. The SQI values were compared with six guideline values applied as well as with the M-SQGQs. The SQI values were severely influenced by a few variables of high exceedance in the degree of non-compliance. The SQI values were very dependent on both the numbers and values of guideline variables used in index caluculation. Nevertheless, the SQI could provide integrated and simplified information from a large number of chemical data set. It is required to further evaluate protocols and guideline applied for deriving SQI and to compare it with field based sediment toxicity test and ecosystem integrity.

Assessing agricultural competitiveness of cities and counties in Gyeongbuk

  • The government of Gyeongbuk in Korea increased the financial input in the agricultural sector by 43% from 2008 through 2012. However, the productivity of the agricultural sector in Gyeongbuk rose only about 3.6% during the same period. This study evaluated the agricultural competitiveness of each city or county in Gyeongbuk using six evaluation indices (scale, productivity, finance input, location quotient, technical education, and total) and investigated the relationship between the indices and total values of agricultural productions. The results show that Sangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Uiseong, and Seongju have high competitiveness for the scale index. For the productivity index, Gimcheon, Mungyeong, Ulleung, Yeongju, and Seongju were highly evaluated. For the location quotient index, Yeongcheon, Uiseong, Cheongdo, Seongju, and Sangju have high competitiveness. Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Gunwi, and Yeongyang were highly evaluated for the agricultural finance input index. For the agricultural technical education index, Chilgok, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Gyeongju have high competitiveness. Finally, Sangju, Euiseong, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, and Andong were highly evaluated for the total competitive index, while Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, Goryeong, Uljin, and Cheongsong have a low competitiveness for the total competitive index. This study also found that out of five indices, scale, location quotient, and technical education indices have a positive and statistically significant effect on the total values of agricultural production. However, we did not find any statistically significant effect of the productivity and finance input indices on the total values of agricultural production. Hence, we can conclude that the government should focus their agricultural policy on scale, location quotient and education to improve total agricultural production.

STADIUM: Species-Specific tRNA Adaptive Index Compendium

  • Due to the increasing interest in synonymous codons, several codon bias-related terms were introduced. As one measure of them, the tRNA adaptation index (tAI) was invented about a decade ago. The tAI is a measure of translational efficiency for a gene and is calculated based on the abundance of intracellular tRNA and the binding strength between a codon and a tRNA. The index has been widely used in various fields of molecular evolution, genetics, and pharmacology. Afterwards, an improved version of the index, named specific tRNA adaptation index (stAI), was developed by adapting tRNA copy numbers in species. Although a subsequently developed webserver (stAIcalc) provided tools that calculated stAI values, it was not available to access pre-calculated values. In addition to about 100 species in stAIcalc, we calculated stAI values for whole coding sequences in 148 species. To enable easy access to this index, we constructed a novel web database, named STADIUM (Species-specific tRNA adaptive index compendium). STADIUM provides not only the stAI value of each gene but also statistics based on pathway-based classification. The database is expected to help researchers who have interests in codon optimality and the role of synonymous codons. STADIUM is freely available at http://stadium.pmrc.re.kr.

Influence of Standing Balance With External Rotation Angle of the Hemiplegia Leg (편마비환자의 환측 하지 외회전 정도가 기립균형에 미치는 영향)

  • The two groups each consisting of 28 people who had an adult hemiplegia due to a brain injury received two different methods of exercises to reduce the angle to which the affected lower limb rotates externally. The comparisons between the two groups were made for the changes of the angle in external rotations measured between pre and post test. The static balance index values taken during pre and post tests were also compared. In addition, the correlations of the angle to which the affected lower limb rotates externally with static balance index values were analyzed. The result were as follows: 1. A statistical analysis indicated that in group one having taken simple R.O.M exercises, the angle to which the affected lower limb rotates externally and the static balance index values were both significantly different between pre and post test (P<.01). 2. A statistical analysis indicated that in group two having taken a pattern movement, both the angle to which the affected lower limb rotates externally and static balance index values were significantly different between pre and post test (P<.01). 3. A significant difference between simple R.O.M exercises group and pattern movement exercises groupwas shown only for the angle to which affected limb rotates externally not for static balance index values (P<.01), 4. Pearson correlation coefficient for the angle to which the affected limb rotates externally with static balance index values was found to be significant only in pattern movement exercises group (P < .05).

A Study on the Correlation between the index Values and Qualitative·Quantitative Evaluation Elements and the Distinction Ability of the Journals' Registration Condition of the KCI-based Composite index in Evaluating Korean Journals (한국 학술지 평가를 위한 KCI 기반 복합지표의 지수 값과 질적·양적 평가요소 사이의 연관성 및 학술지 등재 상태 구별 능력에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to analyze the change in the correlation between the index values and qualitative quantitative evaluation elements by applying 'the decile of total number of articles' instead of the average annual number of articles in Kor-Factor2, and to evaluate the distinction ability between registered journals and register nominee journals of the KCI. The correlation between the index values and qualitative quantitative evaluation elements was analyzed by calculating the correlation coefficient between the index values and the evaluation elements, and then the correlation was compared with that of Kor-Factor2. To evaluate the distinction ability, we carried out independent samples t-test on the mean difference between index values of register nominee journal group and registered journal group and compared the mean difference with that of Kor-Factor2, IF and journal h-index. As a result, we found that the modified index applying the decile of total number of articles was effective in improving the balance among the correlation between the index values and qualitative quantitative evaluation elements compared to Kor-Factor2, and the new index appeared to be superior to other indexes on distinction ability of the journal's registration condition in the KCI.
