This study aims to investigate the changes in the riparian vegetated area in the Naeseong stream, an unregulated river, in order to analyze the main factors leading to these changes. For this purpose, the land surface cover in the channel area of the Naeseong stream was classified into 9 categories using past aerial photographs collected between 1970 and 2016, which recorded the long-term changes of the Naeseong stream. The increase or decrease in the vegetated area was calculated for each category using a pair of before and after images. The changes in the vegetated area were divided into 6 periods: the unvegetated channel period (1970 - 1980), the first rapid increase (1980 - 1986), the period of decrease due to flood (1986 - 1988), the period of repetitive man-induced disturbance and vegetation increase (1988 - 2008), the period of gradual vegetation increase (2008 - 2013), and the period of second rapid increase (2013 - 2016). Multiple regression analysis was performed using independent variables representing hydrology, climate, and geomorphology. The major variables found to be involved in the changes in the vegetated area of the Naeseong stream were the discharge during June - July, channel width, and temperature during April - June. Among the three variables, discharge and temperature were respectively the main independent variables in the downstream and the upstream reaches as per a single variable model. Channel width was the variable that distinguished the upstream and downstream reaches of the stream. The implication of the long-term increase in the vegetated area in the Naeseong stream was discussed based on the result of this study.
The MILD combustion and pollutant emission characteristics were investigated computationally. The temperature of supplying air-stream and mixing rate (${\Omega}$) of exhaust gas in the air-stream were adjusted to investigate the effects of those parameters on the MILD combustion in jet flow field. The emission indices for NO (EINO) and CO (EICO) were introduced to quantify the amount of those species emitted from the combustion. The high-temperature region disappeared gradually as the mixing rate increased for fixed air-stream temperature. The EINO increased as the air-stream temperature became higher for fixed mixing rate, and the EINO decreased dramatically with increasing the mixing rate for each air-stream temperature condition. The EICO also decreased with increasing the mixing rate and it was nearly independent of air-stream temperature except for near ${\Omega}$ = 0.7. It was found that the CO supplied in the air-stream can be destroyed in the MILD combustion over the certain mixing rate.
The effect of selecting hydrologic item for calculating objective function on calibration of stream flow was evaluated by Hydrologic Simulation Porgram-Fortran (HSPF) linked with Model Independent Parameter Optimizer (PEST). Daily and monthly stream flow and flow duration were used to calculate objective function. Automated calibration focused on monthly stream was proper to analyze seasonal or yearly water budget but not proper to predict daily stream flow or percent chance flow exceeded. Calibration result focused on flow duration is proper to predict precent chance flow exceeded but not proper to analyze water budget or predict peak flow. These results indicate that hydrologic item calculated for objective function on calibration procedure could influence calibration results and watershed modeler should select carefully hydrologic item for the purpose of model application. Current, the criteria of stream flow of Korean TMDL is generated based on percent chance flow exceeded, so flow duration should be included to calculate objective function on calibration procedure for the estimation of criteria of stream flow using hydrologic model.
The regression models for the water temperatures of Ban Byeon Stream and Yong Jeon stream were developed using multi-regression method. It was also investigated that the applicability of the stream temperature prediction to two-dimensional numerical simulation to predict the vertical water temperature in Imha Reservoir. Air temperature and dew point as independent variables were selected to be applicable to cases with the different variation of flow rates. The data division of water temperature using a cutoff flow rate of $20m^3/s$ was found to reduce the prediction error of the stream temperature. The mean absolute percent error of the numerical simulation results of the vertical water temperature in Imha Reservoir using the regression models was 11%, which was only 4.3% lager than the simulation result using the measured stream temperature. Therefore, the regression models of the stream temperatures using multi-regression method applied in this study could be applied to predict the vertical water temperature in Imha Reservoir with a good accuracy.

As the interest on biodiversity has increased around the world, researches about evaluating potential for habitat are also increasing to find and comprehend the valuable habitats. This study focus on comprehending the significance of stream in evaluating habitat's potential. The purpose of this study is to evaluate habitat potential with applying stream as a main variable, and to comprehend the relationship between the variables and habitat potential. Basin is a unit that has hydrological properties and dynamic interaction with ecosystem. Especially, biodiversity and suitability of habitat in basin area has direct correlation with stream. Existing studies also are proposing for habitat potential evaluation in basin unit, they applied forest, slope and road as main variables. Despite stream is considered the most important factor in basin area, researchers haven't applied stream as a main variable. Therefore, in this study, three variables that can demonstrate hydrological properties are selected, which are, riparian distance, stream order and land use disturbance, and evaluate habitat potential. Habitat potential is analyzed by using Maxent (Maximum entropy model), and vertebrate's presence data is used as dependent variables and stream order map and land cover map is used as base data of independent variables. As a result of analysis, habitat potential is higher at riparian and upstream area, and lower at frequently disturbed area. Result indicates that adjacent to stream, upstream, and less disturbed area is the habitat that vertebrate prefer. In particular, mammals prefer adjacent area of stream and forest and reptiles prefer upriver area. Birds prefer adjacent area of stream and midstream and amphibians prefer adjacent area of stream and upriver. The result of this research could help to establish habitat conservation strategy around basin unit in the future.

In this study, it is an object to develop a regression model for the estimation of TOC (total organic carbon) concentration using investigated data for three years from 2010 to 2012 in the Gam Stream unit watershed, and applied in 2009 to verify the applicability of the regression model. TOC and $COD_{Mn}$ (chemical oxygen demand) were appeared to be derived the highest correlation. TOC was significantly correlated with 5 variables including BOD (biological oxygen demand), discharge, SS (suspended solids), Chl-a (chlorophyll a) and TP (total phosphorus) of p<0.01. As a result of PCA (principal component analysis) and FA (factor analysis), COD, TOC, SS, discharge, BOD and TP have been classified as a first factor. TOCe concentration was estimated using the model developed as an independent variable $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$. R squared value between TOC and measurement TOC is 0.745 and 0.822, respectively. The independent variable were added step by step while removing lower importance variable. Based on the developed optimal model, R squared value between measurement value and estimation value for TOC was 0.852. It was found that multiple independent variables might be a better the estimation of TOC concentration using the regression model equation(in a given sites).

Applicability of 8 day interval flow data for the calibration of hydrologic model was evaluated using Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) at Kyungan watershed. The 8 day interval flow monitored by Ministry of Environment located at upstream was calibrated and periodically validated during 2004-2008. And continuous daily flow monitored by Ministry of Construction & Transportation (MOCT) and located at the mouth was compared with daily simulated data during 2004-2007 as spatial validation. Automatic calibration tool which is Model-Independent Parameter Estimation & Uncertainty Analysis (PEST) was applied for HSPF calibration procedure. The model efficiencies for calibration and periodic validation were 0.63 and 0.88, and model performances were fair and very good, respectively, based on criteria of calibration tolerances. Continuous daily stream flow at the mouth of Kyungan watershed were good agreement with observed continuous daily stream flow with showing 0.63 NS value. The PEST program is very useful tool for HSPF hydrologic calibration using non-continuous daily stream flow as well as continuous daily stream flow. The 8 day interval flow data monitored by MOE could be used to calibrate hydrologic model if the continuous daily stream flow is unavailable.
The problem of the formation of steady stream of flat bottom boundary is revisited by applying a progressive finite amplitude wave as an external flow. A solution for the boundary layer is found by expanding the boundary equation into double Fourier series. A vertical profile of the stream is obtained as a function of the ratio, h/L, where h and L are the water depth and the wave length. For the best applicable range of the external wave, it is shown that the boundary stream is independent of the fluid viscosity, but a function of the wave parameters and the water depth. The stream velocity of the steady boundary layer flow is proportional to the wave phase velocity and the square of the ratio, H/h, where His the wave height. The magnitude of the velocity is insignificant when h/L is greater than 1/5.

Most of the islands of Korea are distributed in the South and West Sea, and it consists of independent small stream. As a result, the fish community that inhabits the island's stream is isolated from the mainland and other island. This study utilized a Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and a random forest model to analyze the relationship between environmental variables and fish communities inhabiting islands in South Korea. Through the SOM analysis, the fish communities were divided into three clusters, and there were differences in biotic and abiotic factors between these groups. Cluster I consisted of sites with relatively larger island areas and a higher number of species and population. It was found that 15 out of 16 indicator species were included. Meanwhile, the remaining clusters had fewer species and populations. Cluster II, especially, showed the lowest impact from physical variables such as water width and depth. As a result of predicting the species richness using the random forest model, physical variables in habitats, such as stream width and water depth, had a relatively higher importance on species richness. On the other hand, forest area was the most important variables for predicting Shannon diversity, followed by maximum water depth, and gravel. The results suggest that this study can be used as basic data for establishing a stream ecosystem management strategy in terms of conservation and protection of biological resources in streams of islands.
The purpose of this study was to develop the environmental management strategy of streams based on the quantified evaluation method of the stream environment. The six streams in Jinju city flowing into the Nam-river were selected for the case study. The stream environment evaluation was performed considering the following three independent field surveys. First, the stream naturalnesses considering 20 evaluation elements were investigated for each unit section of the streams having the length of 500m and the width of 100m, and then were evaluated into 5 grades. Second, water qualities of the streams were evaluated into 5 grades based on the results of eight times water quality survey. Third, the landuse patterns in the stream basins were evaluated into 5 grades according to the residential area ratio. Finally, the stream environments were classified into 5 grades by integrating the above three subfactors - stream naturalness, water quality, and residential landuse. According to the evaluation results of stream environments, the three environmental management strategies of streams were suggested. As the results of the case study, Panmun stream and Ghajwa stream were evaluated to the forth grade that need active environmental restoration, and Nabul stream and Yonga stream were evaluated to the second grade that need partial environmental restoration while Youngchun river and Dogsan stream were evaluated to the first grade showing the desirable stream environmental condition. The above environmental evaluation results for each stream will be an important reference for the further stream restoration or management plan.
