  • The fracture toughness of ceramics can be measure by such various methods as DT (double torsion), CN (chevron notch) etc. But, the application of these methods to the engineering ceramics is very difficult because of its very high hardness. So, IF (indentation fracture) method is generally used for the evaluation of fracture toughness of ceramics. The Median crack induced by the sharp Vickers indenter was compared with the detected AE (acoustic emission) signal. On the silicon nitride ceramics, the AE test results agree fairly well with the median crack occurance and growth process. But, on the alumina, very many complicated crack signals were detected besides median crack. It can be considered that the IF methods must be used in limited engineering ceramics materials.

  • In this research, the effects of fiber stacking sequence on damage behaviors of FML(Fiber Metal Laminates) subject to indentation loading. SOP (Singly Oriented Ply) FML and angle ply FML were fabricated to study fiber orientation effects and angle ply effects. FML were fabricated by using 1050 aluminum laminate and carbon/epoxy prepreg. To increase adhesive bonding strength, Al laminate was etched using FPL methods. The static indentation test were conducted by using UTM(5ton, Shimadzu) under the 2side clamped conditions. During the tests, load and displacement curve and crack initiation and propagation behaviors were investigated. As fiber orientation angle increases, the crack initiation load of SOP FML increases because the stiffness induced by fiber orientation is increased. The penetration load of SOP FML is influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions. However, the macro-crack of angle ply FML was initiated by fiber breakage of lower ply because angle plies in Angle ply FML prevents the crack growth and consolidation. The Angle ply FML has a critical cross-angle which prevent crack growth and consolidation. Damage behavior of Angle ply FML is changed around the critical cross-angle.

  • In this paper, cracking threshold for nanoindentation is analyzed by using 3D finited-element method. The analysis by maximum principal stress criterion can obtain the reliable results for determining to crack initiation location and load. Because the ratio of maximum principal stress to indentation depth for Victors indentation is smaller than flat-plane-column indentation and cracking for Victors indentation occurs from the inner part of specimen difficult to measure crack length, the nanoindentation facture test for flat-plane-column indentation is more effective.

  • Silicon nitride ceramics with highly oriented microstructure were prepared by tape casting a slurry containing 5 wt% of the silicon nitride whiskers. The whiskers were aligned in the casting direction and worked as seeds for the grain growth. The anisotropy was observed from the sintering shrinkage, Vickers indentation crack lengths, and XRD patterns. The cracks were much longer on the surface normal to the aligned grains than on the tape casting surface where the lateral cracks were also observed. The effect of sintering additives and the annealing treatment on the indentation crack length was examined. The sample with higher silica content had longer cracks than the one with lower silica content. The crack length anisotropy increased after annealing at 2123K.

  • This effective way for repairing a fatigue crack is making indetations around fatigue crack tip. In this paper, we performed fatigue test to investigate the optimal position of the indentations, and observed crack opening behavior at the same time. The indentation positions of specimens were on the crack tip, front and back of the crack tip. The results of the experiment showed taht it was veryeffective way to increase fatigue life that making indentations on the crack tip, and it was the optimal position that making indentations on the crack tip.

  • It is useful way to make indentations near crack tip in order to increase fatigue life or repair a fatigue crack. In this study, bending fatigue tests were performed to investigate the optimal position of the indentations near crack tip. The results shows that fatigue life of the specimen is dramatically increased by indentation and the most effective location is the back of the crack tip.

  • In this study, we proposed an indentation evaluation method for fracture toughness using cohesive finite element simulations. First, we examined the effect of material properties (yield strain, Poisson's ratio, and elastic modulus) on crack size during Vickers indentation and then generated a regression formula that explains the relations among fracture toughness, indentation load, and crack size. We also proposed another indentation formula for fracture toughness evaluation using the contact size a and E/H (H: hardness). Finally, we examined the relation between the crack size and the indenter shapes. Based on this, we can generate from the formula obtained using the Vickers indenter a formula for an indenter of different shapes. Using the proposed method, fracture toughness is directly estimated from indentation data.

  • A study is made on the characterization of damage tolerance by spherical indentation in hardly coated layer structure with modest elastic modulus mismatch. A hard silicon nitride is prepared for the coating material and silicon nitride with 5wt% of boron nitride composites for underlayer. Hot pressing to eliminate the effect of interface delamination during the fracture makes strong interfacial bonding. The elastic modulus mismatch between the layers is not only large enough to suppress the surface crack initiation from the coating layer but sufficiently small to prevent the initiation of radial crack from the interface. The strength degradation of the layer structure after sphere contact indentation does not significantly occur, while the degradation of silicon nitride-boron nitride composite is critical at a high load and high number of contacts.

  • Aging aircraft accumulates widespread fatigue damage commonly referred to as multiple site damage(MSO). For ductile material such as 2024-T3 aluminum, MSO may lower the service life below that which is predicted by conventional fracture mechanics. The present paper is concerned with the fatigue life extension by pre-indentation technique for thin 2024-T3 aluminum plate to decelerate the crack propagation rate in the panels with MSO. The panel with fastener holes can be simply modelled by Hole/Slot type Middle-Tension specimen. Results of fatigue testing show significantly improving failure cycles from 10 to 40 times. This retardation effect is decreased by increasing the loading level in the constant amplitude loading. In the sense of retardation mechanism, the crack propagation rate is gradually attenuated by entering the indentation mark and maintains at the lowest value for a long period after the edge of crack passes the center of indentation area.
