  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are examined via finite element (FE) analyses. An optimal location for data analysis is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions, which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/com-pression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress-strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • The elastic modulus and the apparent density of the trabecular bone were evaluated from spherical indentation tests and Computed Tomography (CT) and their relationship was quantified. The femurs were prepared for trabecular bone analysis. Embedded with respect to their anatomical orientation, the transverse planes of the trabecular bone specimens were scanned at 1㎜ intervals using a CT scanner. The metaphyseal regions of femurs were sectioned with a diamond-blade saw, producing 8㎜ cubes. Using a specially made spherical indentation tester, the cubes were mechanically tested in the anterior-posterior (AP), medial-lateral (ML), and inferior-superior (IS) directions. After determination of modulus from the mechanical testing, the apparent densities of the specimens were measured. The results showed that the IS modulus was significantly greater than both the AP and ML moduli with the AP modulus greater than the ML modulus. This demonstrated that orthogonality was a structural characteristic of the trabecular bone. The power relationship between the modulus and the apparent density was also found to be statistically significant.

  • MEMS technology applying to the sensors and micro-electro devices is complete system. These microsystems are made by variable processes. Especially, the mentallization process has very important functions to transfer the power operating the sensor and signal induced from sensor part. But in the structures of MEMS the local stress concentration and deformation are often yielded by an irregular geometrical shape and different constraint. Therefore, this paper studies the effect of supporting type and thickness ratio about thin film of the substrate on the residual stress variation when the thermal loads is applied to the multi-layer thin film fabricated by metallization process. Specimens were made from several materials such as Al, Au and Cu. Then, uniform thermal load was applied, repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by FE Analysis and nano-indentation method using AFM. Generally, the specimen made of Al induced the larger residual stress than that of made of other materials. Specimen made of Cu and Au having the low thermal expansion coefficient induces the minimum residual stress. Similarly, the lowest indentation length was measured by nano-indentation method in the Si/Au/Cu specimen. Particularly, clusters are created in the specimen made of Cu by thermal load and the indentation length became increasingly large by cluster formation.

  • The stress-strain relation of aluminum (Al) alloy foam cell wall was evaluated by the instrumented sharp indentation method. The indentation in a few micron ranges was performed on the cell wall of Al-alloy foam having a composition or Al-3wt.%Si-2wt.%Cu-2wt.%Mg as well as its precursor (material prior to foaming). To extract the stress-stram relation in terms of yield stress ${\sigma}_y$, strain hardening exponent n and elastic modulus E, the closed-form dimensionless relationships between load-indentation depth curve and elasto-plastic property were used. The tensile properties of precursor material of Al-alloy foam were also measured independently by uni-axial tensile test. In order to verify the validity of the extracted stress-strain relation, it was compared with the results of tensile test and finite element (FE) analysis. A modified cubic-spherical lattice model was proposed to analyze the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam. The material parameters extracted by the instrumented nanoindentation method allowed the model to predict the compressive behavior of the Al-alloy foam accurately.

  • In this study, we suggest a method for material property evaluation by dual-triangular pyramidal indenters using the reverse analysis. First, we demonstrated that load-displacement curves of conical and triangular pyramidal indenters are different for the same material. For this reason, an independent research on the triangular pyramidal indenter is needed. From FE indentation analyses on various materials, we then investigated the relationships among material properties, indentation parameters and load-displacement curves. From this, we established property evaluation formula using dual-triangular pyramidal indenters having two different half-included-angles. The approach provides the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent within an average error of 3% for various materials.

  • This paper describes a development of the extrusion process and estimation of the weldability for multi cell tubes used to cooling system of automobiles. A study on extrusion process is performed through the 3D FE simulation in non-steady state and extrusion experimentation. Also, nano-indentation test is employed to estimate the weldability of tubes. Especially, An evaluation of the weldability using the nano-indentation is accomplished as compared with nano-hardness in welded part and in the others. Finally, the pattern of the mandrel defection is investigated according to shapes of the porthole and/or chamber.

  • A behavior of interface of cold forging tool coated by hard film is analyzed by FEM. The indentation of a hemispherical tool of SUJ2 in JIS coated by electroplated coating of chromium into a cylindrical workpiece of S25C in JIS is performed. The proposed constitutive equations are implemented by the non-linear springs model at the interface. Calculated results show that the maximum interfacial normal displacement is observed at an immediately forward from the lip of the indentation, whereas maximum interfacial tangential displacement is at the immediately backward of the lip of the indentation.

  • Condenser tube is a component of the heat exchanger in automobile and air conditioning apparatus. It is generally made from the 1000 or 3000 series Al alloys that have good heat efficiency. In the case of 3000 series, these have high strength and hardness but have the disadvantage of low extruability. The development of extruding process in condenser tube with 3000 series Al alloys is studied in this paper. A study on extrusion process is performed through the 3D FE simulation in non-steady state and extrusion experimentation. Also, nano-indentation test is employed to estimate the weldability of tubes. Especially, An evaluation of the weldability using the nano-indentation is accomplished as compared with nano-hardness of welded part and the others in cross-section of tube.

  • Apparent mechanical properties in structural components can be different from the initially designed values due to the formation of the residual stress in metal forming and welding. Therefore, the evaluation of residual stress has great importance in the reliability diagnosis of structural components. A nondestructive continuous indentation technique has been proposed to evaluate various strength concerning mechanical properties from the analysis of load-depth curve. In this study, quantitative residual stress estimation on API X65 welded joints for natural gas pipeline was performed by analyzing the variation of indentation loading curve by residual stress through a new proposed theoretical model.

  • When a rigid wedge is indented in to a semi-infinite block, the material is bulged up around the wedge that is generally called lip. The previous works in this filed considered the outer profile of the lip to be linear. But, present authors observed both experimentally and with the aid of finite element analysis that the profile of the lip is not always linear, and it depends on the angle of the wedge and friction parameters. So, in this work, attempts have been made to calculate hardness of indentation for different wedge angles and friction parameters. As hardness is intrinsic property of material, consideration of either linear or parabolic lip will not be affected much. A comparative study of hardness for linear and parabolic free surface profiles of the piled up material around the cone is analyzed in this work.
