  • Numerical analysis of three dimensional incompressible turbulent flows in LNG marine high pressure drop control valves was carried out by using the CFD-ACE from ESI-Group. In this study, flow characteristics of control valves with complex flow fields including cavitation effect were investigated. Simulation was performed on five models of control valve that had different orifice diameters of anti-trim and the size of valve. Comparing newly designed control valves for controling the occurrence of cavitation with the conventional valve, new valves showed a improved flow pattern with almost no cavitation.

  • Fractional Step Methods(FSM) are popular in simulation of unsteady incompressible flow. In this study, we demonstrate that FSM, combined with a Volume-Of-Fluid method, can be further applied to simulation of multiphase flow. The interface between the fluids is constructed by the effective least squares volume-of-fluid interface reconstruction algorithm and advected by the velocity using the operator split advection algorithm. To verify our numerical methodology, our results are compared with other authors' numerical and experimental results for the benchmark problems, revealing excellent agreement. The present FSM sheds light on accurate simulation of turbulent multiphase flow which is found in many engineering applications.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of incompressible flow in a tube type marine fuel oil filter have been investigated. Fluent program has been used to obtain the solutions for the problems of three-dimensional, turbulent fuel oil flow in a filtering system. The inlet flow field is assumed to be uniform. The velocity and pressure distributions were obtained using Darcy's law. The increase of inlet velocity for cleaning fuel oil may cause some problems like vibration of the filter element. It was also required to consider the distribution of cleaning velocity because the worst distribution of cleaning velocity may cause the local insufficient cleaning effect and furthermore the effective filtration area can be reduced. The simulated results show that the computer code can be successfully applied for simulation of the complex base oil flow through the porous media. This paper could be applied to the design of auto-backwashing filtering system as design factor.

  • Curretly, the development of MEMS(Micro Electronic Mechanical System) technology awakes many research's interest for the aerodynamics. This work presents the development of a compact synthetic jet actuator for flow separation control at the flat plate. The formation and evolution of fluidic actuators based on synthetic jet technology are investigated using Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Also, 2-Dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equation solver with single partitioning method for Multi-Block grid to analyze and a modeled boundary condition in developed fo. the synthetic jet actuator. Both laminar and turbulent jets are investigated. Results show very good agreement with experimental measurements. A jet flow develops, even though no net mass flow is introduced. Pair of counter-rotating vortices are observed near the jet exit as are observed in the experiments.

  • Computational and experimental investigations on the three-dimensional flowfield through an automotive cooling fan are carried out in this work. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional, turbulent flow through a rotating axial-flow fan is analyzed with Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations and standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model. The governing equations are discretized with finite-volume approximations in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. Computational static pressures on the casing wall agree well with the experimental data which are measured in this work. And, they are sensitive to the change of tip clearance. The flowfield is not significantly affected by the thickness of the blade. The k-.omega. model gives the static pressure rise on the casing wall which is similar to that with the k-.epsilon. model.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop high efficiency plastic plate heat exchangers which can be substituted for conventional aluminum plate heat exchangers. Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated: that is, flat plate type, turbulent promoter type, corrugate type and dimple type heat exchanger. The flat plate type is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulent promoter type is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulent promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. Numerical simulation is carried out using the FLUENT code. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type. The tendency of numerical simulation results is in good agreement with that of the experimental results.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted in order to simulate the characteristics of complex flow through linear cascades of high performance turbine blade with/without tip clearance by using a pressure-correction based, generalized 3D incompressible Wavier-Stokes CFD code. The development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, leakage vortex, tip vortex within tip clearance, etc. are clearly identified through the present simulation which uses the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model with wall function method and a second-order linear upwind scheme for convective terms. The present simulation results are consistent with the generally known tendency that occurs in the blade passage and tip clearance. A 3D model for secondary and leakage flows through turbine cascades with/without tip clearance is also suggested from the present simulation results, including the effects of tip clearance height.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis and numerical optimization methods are presented for the design of an axial-flow fan. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard k- ${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governing equations are discretized using finite volume method. Steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and BFGS method are compared to determine the searching directions. Golden section method and quadratic fit-sectioning method are tested for one dimensional search. Objective function is defined as a ratio of generation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. Two variables concerning sweep angle distribution are selected as the design variables. Performance of the final fan designed by the optimization was tested experimentally.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate flow characteristics of Two dimensional backward-facing step by numerical approach. A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA algorithm is used for the solution of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to simulate the laminar, transitional and turbulent flow conditions at which the experimental data can be available for the backward-facing step. The twenty kinds of Reynolds number are used for the calculations. In an effort to demonstrate that the reported solutions are dependent on the mesh refinement, computations are performed on seven different meshes of uniformly increasing refinement. Also to investigate the result of inflow dependence, two kinds of the inflow profile are chosen for the laminar flow. As criterion of benchmarking the result of numerical simulation, reattachment length is used for the selected Reynolds numbers.
