Tn this study, model soil deposits are prepared in large test chambers to minimize the scale effects. Also, slurry of mixture containing 50 percent kaolin clay and 50 percent silica has been consolidated to simulate the process of natural soil deposit formation and to reduce the consolidation time. To provide a more detailed description of varying soil properties along the soil profile of model clay deposits and to compare the in-situ test results with those from prototype tests, miniature in-situ tests, including vane shear, piezoprobe, and cone penetration tests were conducted in each of the clay deposits. The current results indicate that consistent soil deposits were prepared for the current and previous test programs. Also, reasonable predicting methods of prototype behavior based on model in-situ test results were suggested in this study by examining differences between the test results from both the model and prototype tests.
It is well known that shotcrete is the most important support member for the construction of large underground spaces. Generally, the strength of the field shotcrete is heavily dependent on the field mixing and spraying conditions so that it is different from the strength of the shotcrete mixed in laboratories. As a support member, the early strength of shotcrete unlike concrete is very important to the initial stabilization of the underground spaces. Therefore, the field methods to efficiently test the early strength of shotcrete have been highly required. This paper aimed to verify the pneumatic pin penetration test and the point load test for measuring the early strength of the field shotcrete. As a result of the experiments through a series of uniaxial compression, pin penetration, and point load tests for the range of the early shotcrete strength, two equations to estimate reliably the uniaxial compressive strength by the pin penetration and the point load tests were acquired.
A semi-closed loop ground heat exchanger is proposed and its performance is compared through the measuring the effective thermal conductivity of the ground. In-situ tests based on the line source model are carried out to evaluate the thermal characteristics of each ground heat exchanger which has different penetration water flow rate. The test results show the increasing effective thermal conductivity of ground as the penetration water flow rate(PWFR) is increased. Therefore, the higher thermal performance of the proposed semi-closed ground heat exchanger can be expected.
Sandfill at reclaimed sites is usually formed by more than one placement method. Reclaimed sandfill often shows highly variable profiles and the cone penetration test is most commonly used for site characterization. Correlations between cone resistance and geotechnical parameters for sand are influenced by in-situ stress level and it is important to incorporate stress level effect. In this study, cone penetration tests were performed at several elevations from the top of a 10m high surcharge, which was later removed step by step. In order to establish more reliable correlations between cone resistance and geotechnical parameters for sand, different ways of normalizing cone resistance by the corresponding in-situ vertical stress were investigated.

The shear wave velocity ($V_s$) has been commonly used to evaluate the dynamic properties of soil. The field $V_s$ probe (FVP) was already developed to assess the shear stiffness of a soft clay. The objective of this study is to investigate the disturbance effects of the FVP due to the penetration. The laboratory tests are conducted in a large-scale consolidometer (calibration chamber). The reconstituted clay is mixed at the water content of 110% using a slurry mixer. The FVP and down-hole test are carried out every 1cm interval to compare the data. In addition, two square rods with transducers are also implemented to get the reference value. The shear waves evaluated by the FVP, dow-hole tests, and reference rods are closely matched. This study suggests that the disturbance effect of the FVP due to the penetration into the soft clay soils is small enough and the $V_s$ evaluated by the FVP reflects well the in-situ characteristics. Furthermore, the combination of the FVP and down-hole test shows the possibility of hybrid equipment.

Results of in-situ test, laboratory test and strength prediction method for the soft soil underlain by failed road embankment were compared each other. Comparing cone penetration test results with the field vane test results it can be seen that cone factor is 12. Undrained shear strengths determined from the cone factor which was predicted by prediction equation were smaller than those obtained from field vane tests. Among the prediction methods Jamiolkowsky's method gave close strengths to the measured undrained shear strengths by field vane tests and strength ratio were 0.88~1.23.
The effect of plastic board drains (PBDs)on ground improvement was checked out considering three crucial factors: ground settlement, undrained shear strength, and residual water head. First, the settlement analysis including initial settlement induced by reclamation of sand mat was conducted by back calculation analysis with measured data. Its result showed toot the PBDs used for this site worked well on improving soft ground. Secondly, the undrained shear strength was investigated by laboratory and in-situ tests including unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression (UU) tests, unconfined compression tests, in-situ vane tests, and cone penetration tests. From the test results, they showed that the undrained shear strength of the improved ground by PBDs was significantly increased as well as the strength increasing ratio especially $10{\sim}15m$ below the ground surface on site. Thirdly, the residual water head measurement from the in situ dissipation test was found the same as the static water head, which indicated primary consolidation was completed and the effect of soil improvement with PBDs can be confirmed.

Generally, the plate load test and the field density test are conducted for compaction quality control in earthwork, and then additional analysis. Recently developed that the DCPT (Dynamic Cone Penetration Test) equipment for smart compaction quality control its the system are able to get location and real-time information about worker history management. The IoT-based the DCPT system improved the time-cost in the field compared traditional test, and the functions recording and storage of the DPI (Dynamic Cone Penetration Index) were automated. This paper describes using these DCPT equipment on in-situ and compared to the standards of the DCPT, and the compaction trend had be confirmed with DPI as the field test data. As a result, the DPI of the final compaction decreased by 1.4 times compared to the initial compaction, confirming the increase in the compaction strength of the subgrade compaction layer 10 to 14 cm deep from the surface. A trend of increasing compaction strength was observed. This showed a tendency to increase the compaction strength of the target DPI proposed by MnDOT and the results of the existing plate load test, but there was a difference in the increase rate. Therefore, additional studies are needed on domestic compaction materials and laboratory conditions for target DPI and correlation studies with the plate load tests. If this is reflected, it is suggested that DCPT will be widely used as smart construction equipment in earthworks.

Liquefaction-induced sand boils were observed during the Pohang earthquake (Moment magnitude, 5.4) on November 15, 2017, specifically in the region of agricultural fields and park areas near the epicenter. This was recorded as the first observed liquefaction phenomenon in Korea. This paper analyzes liquefaction potentials at the key sites at Pohang area. The simplified methods and current design standard were used to evaluate the occurrence of liquefaction. The seismic demand was estimated based on the NGA-WEST2 ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs). The liquefaction resistance of the ground was determined using the in-situ tests: standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT). The liquefaction potentials were quantified by liquefaction potential index (LPI), which were compared with those from the previous studies.
Estimation of undrained shear strength $(S_u)$ of clayey soils from piezocone penetration test (CPTu), which has widely been known as one of very promising in situ test methods, requires piezocone factors. Empirical correlations are generally utilized to derive piezocone factors, but previous studies on the empirical piezocone factors are site-specific and in some cases need engineering characteristics, which should be obtained from additional laboratory tests. In this study, empirical cone factors were evaluated by comparing 6 CPTu results at Shihwa region in Korea with reference $S_u$ values obtained from field vane test (FVT). From previous CPTu results of other regions in Korea as well as the results herein, the correlations between piezocone factor, $N_{kT}$ and CPTu results were investigated and three simplified evaluation methods of $S_u$ using only CPTu results were presented. The $S_u$ values estimated by $(q_T-{\sigma}_v)/{\sigma}'_v$ method shows better matches with those obtained from laboratory tests for marine clays at Shihwa region.
