Development of a New Lunar Regolith Simulant using an Automated Program Framework

  • Nowadays, the trend in lunar exploration missions is shifting from prospecting lunar surface to utilizing in-situ resources and establishing sustainable bridgehead. In the past, experiments were mainly focused on rover maneuvers and equipment operations. But the current shift in trend requires more complex experiments that includes preparations for resource extraction, space construction and even space agriculture. To achieve that, the experiment requires a sophisticated simulation of the lunar environment, but we are not yet prepared for this. Particularly, in the case of lunar regolith simulants, precise physical and chemical composition with a rapid development speed rate that allows different terrains to be simulated is required. However, existing lunar regolith simulants, designed for 20th-century exploration paradigms, are not sufficient to meet the requirements of modern space exploration. In order to prepare for the latest trends in space exploration, it is necessary to innovate the methodology for producing simulants. In this study, the basic framework for lunar regolith simulant development was established to realize this goal. The framework not only has a sample database and a database of potential simulation target compositions, but also has a built-in function to automatically calculate the optimal material mixing ratio through the particle swarm optimization algorithm to reproduce the target simulation, enabling fast and accurate simulant development. Using this framework, we anticipate a more agile response to the evolving needs toward simulants for space exploration.

PFC를 이용한 침투그라우팅시 미세입자의 이동 및 전단강도증가 해석 (Analysis of Fine Particle Transfer and Shear Strength Increase Using PFC in Permeation Grouting)

  • 침투그라우팅시 미세입자의 이동 메카니즘과 미세입자들의 간극 충진 후 강도증가 상태를 파악하기 위해 PFC3D를 이용한 수치해석을 수행하였다. 해석을 위하여 업스케일링 기법을 이용하였으며 연구를 통해 다음과 같은 사실들이 관찰되었다. 첫째, 토층 입자에 대한 그라우팅 미세 입자의 상대적 크기가 0.05배에서 0.25배로 증가하면서 입자의 이동이 제한을 받게 된다. 특히, 0.20배 또는 0.25배의 그라우팅 미세입자의 경우, 토층 입자들 간의 공극이 하나 또는 다수의 미세입자들에 의해 막히기 때문에 미세입자의 이동이 거의 없다. 또한 0.05배와 0.10배의 경우, 입자의 이동량이 거의 유사하므로 입자 크기가 감소되어도 그라우팅 효과의 증진은 한계가 있다. 둘째, 침투그라우팅 전과 후의 수치시료에 대한 물성 실험을 한 결과 점착력과 마찰계수가 증가함이 확인되었다.

Geochemical and S isotopic studies of pollutant evolution in groundwater after acid in situ leaching in a uranium mine area in Xinjiang

  • Laboratory experiments and point monitoring of reservoir sediments have proven that stable sulfate reduction (SSR) can lower the concentrations of toxic metals and sulfate in acidic groundwater for a long time. Here, we hypothesize that SSR occurred during in situ leaching after uranium mining, which can impact the fate of acid groundwater in an entire region. To test this, we applied a sulfur isotope fractionation method to analyze the mechanism for natural attenuation of contaminated groundwater produced by acid in situ leaching of uranium (Xinjiang, China). The results showed that δ34S increased over time after the cessation of uranium mining, and natural attenuation caused considerable, area-scale immobilization of sulfur corresponding to retention levels of 5.3%-48.3% while simultaneously decreasing the concentration of uranium. Isotopic evidence for SSR in the area, together with evidence for changes of pollutant concentrations, suggest that area-scale SSR is most likely also important at other acid mining sites for uranium, where retention of acid groundwater may be strengthened through natural attenuation. To recapitulate, the sulfur isotope fractionation method constitutes a relatively accurate tool for quantification of spatiotemporal trends for groundwater during migration and transformation resulting from acid in situ leaching of uranium in northern China.

THM analysis for an in situ experiment using FLAC3D-TOUGH2 and an artificial neural network

  • The evaluation of Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) coupling behavior is important for the development of underground space for various purposes. For a high-level radioactive waste repository excavated in a deep underground rock mass, the accurate prediction of the complex THM behavior is essential for the long-term safety and stability assessment. In order to develop reliable THM analysis techniques effectively, an international cooperation project, Development of Coupled models and their Validation against Experiments (DECOVALEX), was carried out. In DECOVALEX-2015 Task B2, the in situ THM experiment that was conducted at Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory(URL) by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), was modeled by the research teams from the participating countries. In this study, a THM coupling technique that combined TOUGH2 and FLAC3D was developed and applied to the THM analysis for the in situ experiment, in which rock, buffer, backfill, sand, and heater were installed. With the assistance of an artificial neural network, the boundary conditions for the experiment could be adequately implemented in the modeling. The thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical results from the modeling were compared with the measurements from the in situ THM experiment. The predicted buffer temperature from the THM modelling was about $10^{\circ}C$ higher than measurement near by the overpack. At the other locations far from the overpack, modelling predicted slightly lower temperature than measurement. Even though the magnitude of pressure from the modeling was different from the measurements, the general trends of the variation with time were found to be similar.

포화컬럼실험에서 산화공정을 적용한 내분비계 장애물질의 제거 및 은나노물질의 거동 연구 (Mobility of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and oxidative degradation of endocrine disrupting chemicals by saturated column experiments)

  • We applied column experiments to investigate the environmental fate and transport of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) in fully saturated conditions of porous media. These column experiments were performed to emphasize oxidation method with $H_2O_2$ concentration and acidic conditions. The mobility of AgNPs was decreased with the increasing ionic strength that the surface charge of AgNPs(zeta potential) was neutralized with the presence of positive ions of $Na^+$. Additionally, it was also affected due to that not only more increased aggregated size of AgNPs and surface charge of quartz sand. The decreased breakthrough curves(BTCs) of bisphenol-A(BPA) and $17{\alpha}$-ethynylestradiol(EE2) were removed approximately 35.3 and 40%. This is due to that endocrine disrupting chemicals(EDCs) were removed with the release of $OH{\cdot}$ radicals by the fenton-like mechanisms from acidic and fenton-like reagent presenting. This results considered that higher input AgNPs with acidic conditions is proved to realistic in-situ oxidation method. Overall, it should be emphasized that a set of column experiments employed with adjusting pH and $H_2O_2$ concentration in proved to be effective method having potential ability of in-situ degradation for removing organic contaminants such as BPA and EE2.

  • This study places a great emphasis on the approaches to the space environment we inhabit, which I hope will contribute to generating a number of creative possibilities. Looking into 'site-specificity' which is characteristic by public art in public space method based on Daniel Buren's works 'in situ', this study analyze the relationship between the public space and works of art as a perspective of public art. The characteristics of his 'in situ' works that intervened works exist as space consisting of serial factors not simply art-object, and they suggest 'site Is a work'. The case study of Daniel Buren's public art project represented the results, the site marketing and serves as a guideline for the future of true Art/Space experiments. This study verifies the need for the arts and the space to work together in order to develop more creative and conceptual approaches to innovation and presentation. This cooperation is the continuation of space design by other means.

  • 고준위폐기물 기준처분시스템의 건전성과 처분안전성의 실험적 검증에 필수적 시설인 지하처분연구시설이 한국원자력연구원 부지 내에 건설되었다. 지하처분연구시설의 부지조사 결과에 대해 기술하고, 이 부지에 건설될 지하처분연구시설의 설계, 인허가, 건설 과정과 건설된 시설의 개요에 대해 하였다. 또 지하처분연구시설에서 수행 중인 현장실험에 대해 소개하였다.

Preliminary Results of Tissue-Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC) Dosimeter for Measuring In-Situ Aviation Radiation

  • We develop the tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) type's space radiation dosimeter to measure in-situ aviation radiation. That was originally developed as a payload of small satellite in the low-earth orbit. This dosimeter is based on a TEPC. It is made of an A-150 tissue-equivalent plastic shell of an internal diameter of 6 cm and a thickness of 0.3 cm. TEPC is filled with pure propane at 13.9 torrs to simulate a cell diameter of 2 ㎛. And the associated portable and low power electronics are also implemented. The verification experiments have been performed by the calibration experiments at ground level and compared with Liulin observation at aircraft altitude during the flight between Incheon airport (ICN) and John F. Kennedy airport (JFK). We found that the TEPC dosimeter can be used as a monitor for space radiation dosimeter at aviation altitude based on the verification with Liulin observation.

유기물질에 의해 오염된 토양에 대한 in-situ세척기법의 적용성 연구 (Application of in-situ Flushing to the Soil Contaminated by Organic Compounds)

  • 일련의 회분식 실험 및 실험실 규모의 연속식 실험을 통하여 유기오염물질에 의해 오염된 토양에 in-situ 토양세척기법을 적용하는데 필요한 운전조건을 도출하였다. 실제 토양에 소수성 유기오염물질인 n-dodecane, naphthalene, anthracene을 일정량 오염시킨 후 Tween 80, Triton X-100, Sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)가 포함된 용액을 이용하여 세척능력을 비교하였다. 회분식 및 연속식 실험 결과, Tween 80와 Triton X-100가 n-dodecane의 제거에 효과가 우수하였으며, naphthalene과 anthracene의 제거에는 SDS와 Tween 80가 우수하였다. 연속식 실험이 끝난 후, 토양에 잔류하는 세척제의 양은 Tween 80이 제일 적었다. 연속식 실험에서 통과유속을 변화시킨 결과, 7 ml/min에서는 세척에 필요한 접촉시간의 감소로 인하여 세척효과가 3 또는 5ml/min보다 오히려 감소되었다. 본 실험의 적용 범위 내에서는 토양의 초기 pH는 세척이 진행됨에 따라 세척능력에 큰 영향을 미치지 않았다. 세척제의 미생물에 대한 독성실험 결과 Tween 80이 그람 음성균과 양성균의 성장에 가장 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 판명됐다.

  • 전도된 정체점 흐름을 갖는 반응기 안의 가열된 석영(quartz) 표면에서 암모니아($NH_3$)가 분해되는 반응을 실험과 수치 모사을 이용하여 조사하였다. 질소($N_2$)와 혼합된 8 mole%의 암모니아를 사용하였고 반응 표면으로 사용된 석영 표면을 가열하기 위한 전열기의 온도는 $300{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ 범위로 설정하였다. 라만 분광법(in situ Raman spectroscopy)을 이용하여 획득한 반응기 내부의 온도와 암모니아 농도 정보를 반응기 모델을 이용하여 분석한 결과, 전열기의 온도 설정에 의존하는 석영 표면의 온도는 $235{\sim}619^{\circ}C$ 범위였으며 암모니아 분해 반응의 활성화 에너지는 10.9~15.8 kcal/mol 범위를 가졌다.
