  • This paper presents a numerical study on the effect of live load pattern on RC flat plate under in-plane compression. Through the numerical study on various live load pattern, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plate is determined. Effects of L.L/D.L. and arrangement of reinforcement on the behavior of the flat plate are also studied. And the efficient arrangement of reinforcement regarding to live load pattern is proposed.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exist concerns over long-term residual deformation when subjected to repeated and/or cyclic loads, especially when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, in this paper time-dependent deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced soil under sustained and/or repeated loads were investigated using a series of plane strain compression tests on geogrid reinforced weathered granite soil specimens. The results indicate that sustained or repeated loads can yield appreciable magnitudes of residual deformations, and that the residual deformations are influenced not only by the loading characteristics but by the mechanical properties of geogrid. It is also found that the preloading technique can be effectively used in controlling residual deformations of reinforced soils subjected to sustained and/or repeated loads.

  • Effects of the anisotrpy due to the initial textures in the plane sheet on plane strain punch stretching has been investigated. In this study, the anisotropy from textures in the sheet is incoporated into the finite element process model by combining the theory of crstal plasticity. Three different textures such as random texture, plane strain compression texture and cube texture are considered. Variations of puch loads as well as thickness distributions of the sheets with three different initial textures are investigated.

  • This study, push-off tests for the initially uncracked specimens were conducted to investigate shear transfer mechanism in reinforce concrete elements. Experimental programs for shear transfer were undertaken to investigate the effect of the concrete compressive strength, the presence of steel stirrups as shear reinforcement and the amount of steel stirrups. As the shear plane is loaded, several cracks form in a direction inclined to the shear plane, creating compression struts in the concrete. For this stage, shear is being transferred through a truss-like action produced by the combination of the compressive force in the concrete struts and the tensile force that the steel reinforcement crossing the shear plane develops. In the normal strength concrete specimens with steel stirrups, ultimate failure occurred when the compression struts crushed in concrete. In the high strength concrete specimens, on the other hand, ultimate failure occurred when the steel stirrups developed their yield strength.

  • A study for the structural strength analysis on the doubler plate subjected to the axial, biaxial in-plane compression and shear load has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate, non-linear elasto-plastic analysis is introduced. Gap element modeling for contact effect between main plate and doubler is prepared and nonlinear analysis procedures are illustrated based on MSC/N4W . In addition, some design guides are suggested through the consideration of several important effects such as corrosion of main plate, doubler width, doubler length and doubler thickness. Finally theses results are compared with developed design formula based on the buckling strength and general trends and design guides according to the variation of design parameters are discussed.

  • In the study, tensile, compression and in-plane tests about longitudinal direction of glass fiber were performed. Also, to obtain the material properties of GFRP fabric composite, tensile test was performed. All test were performed by the test method of ASTM. Maximum compressive strength was smaller than the maximum tensile strength at the longitudinal direction test results. Elastic modulus of the tensile and compressive was almost similar at the compression test results in the longitudinal direction. Based on the GFRP fabric composite test results, GF91 was showed good performance at maximum compressive, maximum strain and elastic modulus.

  • In-cylinder flow of a purpose-built small HSDI Hydra Diesel engine was investigated by laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) during induction and compression processes. The flow was quantified in terms of ensemble-averaged axial and swirl velocities, normalized by the mean piston speed, at a plane located 12mm from the cylinder head and corresponding to the mid-plane of the diametrically-opposed quartz windows at an enigne speed of 1000rpm. The formation of toroidal vortices during the intake process and the evolution and decay of swirl motion during the compression process were observed. Turbulence at around TDC of compression became homogeneous and isotropic.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate long-term behavior of flat plates, subjected to combined in-plane compressive and transverse loads. For the numerical studies, a computer program of nonlinear finite element analysis was developed. It can address creep and shrinkage as weel as geometrical and material nonlinearity, and also it can address various load combinations and loading sequences of transverse load, in-plane compressive load and time. This numerical method was verified by comparison with the existing experiments. Parametric studies were performed to investigate the strength variations of flat plates with four parameters; 1) loading sequence of floor load, compressive load and time 2) uniaxial and biaxial compression 3) the ratio of dead to live load 4) span length. Through the numerical studies, the behavioral characteristics of the flat plates and the governing load combinations were examined. These results will be used to develop a design procedure for the long-term behavior of flat plates in the future.

  • The aim of this work is to provide some insights into the elasto-plastic behaviour of plate girder web square and rectangular panels with centred and eccentric holes under both compression and in-plane bending moment. The numerical study was validated comparing the numerical results obtained for one simple steel plate configuration with the corresponding experimental results, obtained at the University of Padova, observing the influence of the initial out-of-plane imperfections on the force vs. displacement relationship and ultimate strength. Once validated the numerical approach, the effect of bending moment on the stability of the plate is studied and some differences with respect to the uniform compression load case are shown. The influence of dimension and position of the hole, the plate aspect ratio and the steel grade on elasto-plastic behaviour is observed. Some indications regarding the critical slenderness (at which transition from elastic to plastic collapse occurs) are given for square and rectangular plates with symmetric and eccentric holes having small, medium and large diameter.

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the compression ratio and the gamut area for a reconstructed image when using JPEG and JPEG2000. Eighteen color samples from the Macbeth ColorChecker are initially used to analyze the relationship between the compression ratio and the color bleeding phenomenon, i.e. the hue and chroma shifts in the a*b* color plane. In addition, twelve natural color images, divided into two groups depending on four color attributes, are also used to investigate the relationship between the compression ratio and the variation in the gamut area. For each image group, the gamut area for the reconstructed image shows an overall tendency to increase when increasing the compression ratio, similar to the experimental results with the Macbeth ColorChecker samples. However, with a high compression ratio, the gamut area decreases due to the mixture of adjacent colors, resulting in more grey.
