  • In this paper, we propose a block mapping technique applicable to NAND flash memory. In order to use the NAND flash memory with the operating system and the file system developed on the basis of the hard disk which is mainly used in the general PC field, it is necessary to use the system software known as the FTL (Flash Translation Layer). FTL overcomes the disadvantage of not being able to overwrite data by using the address mapping table and solves the additional features caused by the physical structure of NAND flash memory. In this paper, we propose a new mapping method based on the block mapping method for efficient use of the NAND flash memory. In the case of the proposed technique, the data modification operation is processed by using a blank page in the existing block without using an additional block for the data modification operation, thereby minimizing the block unit deletion operation in the merging operation. Also, the frequency of occurrence of the sequential write request and random write request Accordingly, by optimally adjusting the ratio of pages for recording data in a block and pages for recording data requested for modification, it is possible to optimize sequential writing and random writing by maximizing the utilization of pages in a block.

  • Unlike desktop systems, embedded systems usually meet a strict restriction on using memory. It is required to allocate several class files on memory to run a Java program. A Java class file contains such data including a constant pool, class overview, fields information, and methods information. Some of them are used merely for a debugging purpose, others for a program execution. This paper analyzes the internal structure, or format of the class files used for embedded Java systems. We also investigate how much memory will be necessary for each part of the class files when the files are allocated in memory. The experiment was performed on the simpleRTJ, an open-source commercial embedded Java system.

  • Due to the physical characteristics of NAND flash memory, overwrite operations are not permitted at the same location, and therefore erase operations are required prior to rewriting. These extra operations cause performance degradation of NAND flash memory file system. Since it also has an upper limit to the number of erase operations for a specific location, frequent erases should reduce the lifetime of NAND flash memory. These problems can be resolved by delaying write operations in order to improve I/O performance: however, it will lower the cache hit ratio. This paper proposes a policy of page management using double cache for NAND flash memory file system. Double cache consists of Real cache and Ghost cache to analyze page reference patterns. This policy attempts to delay write operations in Ghost cache to maintain the hit ratio in Real cache. It can also improve write performance by reducing the search time for dirty pages, since Ghost cache consists of Dirty and Clean list. We find that the hit ratio and I/O performance of our policy are improved by 20.57% and 20.59% in average, respectively, when comparing them with the existing policies. The number of write operations is also reduced by 30.75% in average, compared with of the existing policies.

  • Slowly, but surely, we are seeing the emergence of a variety of embedded systems that are employing Storage Class RAM (SCRAM) such as FeRAM, MRAM and PRAM, SCRAM not only has DRAM-characteristic, that is, random byte-unit access capability, but also Disk-characteristic, that is, non-volatility. In this paper, we propose a new software architecture that allows SCRAM to be used both for main memory and for secondary storage simultaneously- The proposed software architecture has two core modules, one is a SCRAM driver and the other is a SCRAM manager. The SCRAM driver takes care of SCRAM directly and exports low level interfaces required for upper layer software modules including traditional file systems, buddy systems and our SCRAM manager. The SCRAM manager treats file objects and memory objects as a single object and deals with them in a unified way so that they can be interchanged without copy overheads. Experiments conducted on real embedded board with FeRAM have shown that the SCRAM driver indeed supports both the traditional F AT file system and buddy system seamlessly. The results also have revealed that the SCRAM manager makes effective use of both characteristics of SCRAM and performs an order of magnitude better than the traditional file system and buddy system.

  • Though the FTP(File Transfer Protocol) has been used widely and stable, It has the structural weakness that can't support current file transmissions so that we have to wait the completion of previous file transmission when try to transmit another file. If try to transmit multiple files concurrently using this FTP, It has to forking multiple FTP servers and clients in each user's PC and ISP's host machine it would result in the waist of memory, resource of network and the high workload of system. In order to solving previous problem, in this paper I have designed the new model of FTP which based on multi-thread and created NFTP(Next-Generation FTP)protocol so that may reduce the workload of system and support current file transmission effectively. I have implemented NFTP and also applied to real service, as a result It have provided reliable service by reducing the workload of system and saved the waiting time which would happened.

  • The performance improvement of the secondary storage is very slow compared to the main memory and processor. The data is loaded from secondary storage to memory for the execution of an application. At this time, there is a bottleneck. In this paper, we propose an Executable Compression Method to speed up the initial loading time of application. and we examined the performance. So we implemented the two applications. The one is a compressor for Execution Binary File. and The other is a decoder of Executable Compressed application file on the Embedded System. Using the test binary files, we performed the speed test in the six files. At the result, one result showed that the performance was decreased. but others had a increased performance. the average increasing rate was almost 29% at the initial loading time. The level of compression had different characteristics of the file. And the performance level was dependent on the file compressed size and uncompress time. so the optimized compression algorithm will be needed to apply the execution binary file.

  • As deployments of Flash memory are spreading out rapidly from tiny USB storages to large DB servers, interoperability become an indispensable requirement for Flash memory software architecture. For the purpose, many systems make use of the conventional FAT file system and FTL (Flash Translation Layer) software as a de facto standard. However, the tactless combination of the FAT file system and FTL does not satisfy diverse other requirements of a variety of systems. In this paper, we propose a novel reconfigurable integrated Flash memory software architecture, named INFLAWARE (INtegrated FLAsh softWARE) that supports not only interoperability but also reconfigurability and performance enhancement. Real implementation based experimental results have shown that INFLAWARE can achieve improvements of memory footprint up to 27% with an average of 19%, compared with the conventional FAT and FTL combination. Also, by using map_destroy technique, it can reduce response times of various applications up to 21% with an average of 10%.

  • In this paper, we introduce new FTL(Flash Translation Layer) driver algorithm that tolerate the power off errors. FTL driver is the software that provide the block device interface to the upper layer software such as file systems or application programs that using the flash memory as a block device interfaced storage. Usually, the flash memory is used as the storage devices of the mobile system due to its low power consumption and small form factor. In mobile system, the state of the power supplement is not stable, because it using the small sized battery that has limited capacity. So, a sudden power off failure can be occurred when we read or write the data on the flash memory. During the write operation, power off failure may introduce the incomplete write operation. Incomplete write operation denotes the inconsistency of the data in flash memory. To provide the stable storage facility with flash memory in mobile system, FTL should provide the fault tolerance against the power off failure. SSR (Simple Sector Remapper) is a fault tolerant FTL driver that provides block device interface and also provides tolerance against power off errors.

  • In this thesis, we design and implement a Flash Cache Core Module (FCCM) which operates on the YAFFS NAND flash memory. The FCCM applies memory replacement policy and prefetching policy based on the page reference pattern of applications. Also, implement the Clean-First memory replacement technique considering the characteristics of flash memory. In this method the decision is made according to page hit to apply prefetched waiting area. The FCCM decrease I/O hit frequency up to 37%, Compared with the linux cache and prefetching policy. Also, it operated using less memory for prefetching(maximum 24% and average 16%) compared with the linux kernel.

  • Using SCM in storage systems introduce new potentials for improving I/O performance and reliability. In this paper, we study the use of SCM as a buffer cache that guarantees transactional unit writes. Our proposed method can improve storage system reliability and performance at the same time and can recover the storage system immediately upon a system crash. The Proposed method is based on the LINUX JBD(Journaling Block Device), thus reliability is equivalent to JBD. In our experiments, the file system that adopts our method shows better I/O performance even while guaranteeing high reliability and shows fast file system recovery time (about 0.2 seconds).
