Computer simulation of mold filling and solidification has been performed in order to analyze the flow and solidification phenomena for the casting process of cylinder liner. The simulation result of mold filling shows that the molten metal flows into the mold in stable without scattering. The simulation results of solidification indicate that the last solidified area is located in the feeder. The temperature variation in casting is measured in actual casting and the result is compared with calculation result.
Fluid flow and heat transfer in rectangular duct system are measured and computed by commercial software of Star-CD for comparison between them. Three rectangular systems are investigated in this study. Those are a rectangular duct with 90 degree bended elbow, a rectangular duct with two branchs, and a circular cylinder in a rectangular duct. But heat transfer is studied only for last system. These investigations show us that the numerical solutions predict satisfactorily design factors (K-factor for the elbowed duct, distributions of flow rates into each branch from a duct, and Nusselt number around circular cylinder) even though there are some disagreements in velocity profiles and turbulent kinetic energy.
Erosion-corrosion in a pipe system often occurs at fittings, valves, and weld beads where flow separation and reattachment yield high turbulence intensity. Thus identifying their correlations would be the first step towards resolving the erosion-corrosion problems associated with industrial applications. Bremhorst of the Univ. of Queensland, Australia, proposed that a rotating cylinder with surface roughness (two backward-facing steps periodically mounted on a circular cylinder) be an economical and tractable tool which can generate extreme flow conditions for erosion-corrosion study. In this work, DNS has been carried out for turbulent flows around the same rotating cylinder as his experimental apparatus. Our result shows that a region of intense turbulence intensity and high wall-shear stress fluctuation is formed along the cylinder surface in the recirculating region behind the step, where high mass-transfer capacity is also experimentally observed. Since corrosion is mass-transfer controlled, our finding sheds light on the direction of future corrosion research.
The effect of oscillating on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. Our study is to analyze the vortex formation behind a circular cylinder for different rotary oscillation conditions. And then we are study to portray the unsteady dynamics of wake flows. We decide lock-on region by observing the phase switching phenomena We classify the vortex formation patterns in the primary lock-on region The present study is to identify the quasi-periodic state around lock-on region. At the boundary between lock-on and non-lock-on the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency follow the forcing frequency ($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency ($St_0$). In the quasi-periodic state, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.
Two-dimensional, angle-resolved LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) measurements of the turbulent rotating flow field in a confined cylinder have been performed. The configurations of interest are flows between a rotating upper disk with a rod attached by a disk or impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ},\;45^{\circ}$) and a stationary lower disk in a confined cylinder. The mean flow velocity as well as the turbulent intensity of the flow field have been measured. The results show that the flow is strongly dependent on the position of the impellers or the disk, negligibly affected by the Reynolds number in turbulent flow. It is observed that the mixing effect of the axial flow impeller(${\theta}= 45^{\circ}$) is better than that of the radial flow impeller(${\theta}= 90^{\circ}$) or a disk.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.
IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.
A model engine having a flat cylinder head and a piston face and an off-center intake valve is investigated in this analysis. Calculation domain is confined to the half of the cylinder with swirl free inlet velocity condition. Due to the absence of measured inlet conditions, the inlet flowrates during induction period are calculated from overall mass and energy conservation requirements. Finite difference equation for velocity and pressure were solved by modified SIMPLER algorithm, standard k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model and hybrid scheme. From the result of prediction, dimensionless velocity distribution and turbulence intensities are investigated at each crank angle.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the vortical flows driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a large background rotation.
We present an improved Lagrangian vortex method in 2-D incompressible unsteady viscous flows, which is based on a mesh-free integral approach of the velocity-vorticity formulation. Vorticity fields are represented by discrete vortex blobs that are updated by the Lagrangian vorticity transport with the particle strength exchange scheme. Velocity fields are expressed in a form of the Helmholtz decomposition, which are calculated by a fast algorithm of the Biot-Savart integration with a smoothed kernel and by a well-established panel method. No-slip condition is enforced through viscous diffusion of vorticity from a solid body into field. The vorticity flux is determined in such a way that spurious slip velocity vanishes. Through the comparison with the existing finite volume scheme for the transient vortical flows around an impulsively started cylinder at Reynolds number Re=550, we would obtain a more accurate scheme for vortex methods in complicated flows.
