The responses of brain acetylcholinesterase(Ach-E) and plasma cholinesterase (Ch-E) activities were studied in chicknes given oral doses of Terbufos(S-tert-butyl thiomethyl 0,0-diethyl phosphorodithioate), an organophosphorus insecticide. The acute oral $LD_{50}$ of terbufos was 1.82mg/kg. The activity of plasma Ch-E was inhibited more rapidly than that of brain Ach-E, whereas recovery of plasma Ch-E activity was more rapid than that of brain Ach-E. Recovery of brain Ach-E and plasma Ch-E was followed the model $Y=a+b(log_{10}X)$. Brain Ach-E activity and plasma Ch-E were inhibited 83% and 94%, respectively, at 60min after administered oral $LD_{50}$. Brain Ach-E and plasma Ch-E was inhibited in vitro by Terbufos

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammation effects of essential oils of Erigeron annuus L. Flower. Erigeron annuus L. essential oils were obtained by solvent extraction. Antioxidative ability was evaluated by bioassays using ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid diammonium salt) radical scavenging effect and 2, 2-diphenyl-1-1-picrydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. Erigeron annuus L. essential oil exhibited free radical scavenging activity on ABTS and DPPH 98.6%, 48.3% respectively, at a concentration of $500{\mu}g/ml$. Antimicrobial activity of essential oils of Erigeron annuus L. were tested against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Propionibacterium acnes (P. acne) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) by paper disc method, MIC and MBC. Erigeron annuus L. essential oil showed excellent antibacterial activities against S. aureus with MIC and MBC values of 0.31 mg/mL. The clear zone, indicating antimicrobial activity against P. acnes, was 14 mm, MIC and MBC values 0.31 mg/mL, 0.63 mg/mL, respectively. For the anti-inflammatory activity in RAW 264.7 cell, the Erigeron annuus L. essential oils inhibited not only NO production but also the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as, TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-6 in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggested that Erigeron annuus L. essential oils has considerable potential as a cosmetic ingredient with antioxidative, antimicrobial and anti-inflammation effects.
Protein-bound polysaccharides (PBP) were extracted from the mycellia of Lentinus edodes SR-1, and their anti-tumor activities and immunopotentiating properties were observed. The amounts of PBP needed to extend the doubling time twofold (1 unit) were found to be 1 mg for mouse leukemic cells $P_{388}\;and\;L_{1210}$; 4.4, 3.6 and 6.6 for bowel cancer cells, HCT-48, HRT-18, HT-29 respectively; and 2.6 mg for liver cancer cell, Hep G2. When $P_{388}\;and\;L_{1210}$ were treated with 4 mg of PBP, more than 90% of the cell number were reduced in 48 hours. However, 9 mg of PBP and 72 hrs of incubation time were needed to obtain the same effect for HRT-18, HT-29, and Hep G2. The significant reduction of cell size was observed as the amount of PBP and the incubation time increased. Mice spleen weight and plaque forming cell number increased when the cancer cells were treated with PBP.

An in vitro study was performed to evaluate the effect of four variables on the temperature rise produced by polishing of restorations. The four variables were : restorative material, base, thickness of remaining dentin, continuous polishing or intermittent polishing. Class V cavities were cut on extracted molar and restored with composite resin, resin-modified glass ionomer cement, compomer, amalgam on the various bases (glass ionomer cement, zinc oxide eugenol cement, zinc phosphate cement) Dentin thickness under the restoration was 0.5mm, 1.5mm. Polishing was done with an aluminum oxide-coated disc. Polishing time was continuous or intermittent for up to 1 minute. Intra-pulpal temperature increased almost linearly in all cases. Amalgam produced highest temperature rises at the pulp, while the composite resin, resin-modified glass ionomer cement and compomer were not different for each other. The rate and extent of temperature rising of amalgam restoration was reduced by presence of a cement base. Zinc oxide eugenol cement bases showed the highest temperature rise, while glass ionomer cement, zinc phosphate cement were not different to the untreated tooth Thickness of remaining dentin was only significant for the amalgam restoration. Continuous polishing produced higher temperature rise than intermittent polishing.
A relation between antimicrobial activities and the formation constants of solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with tridentate Schiff base ligand, 4-hydroxy-3(1-{2-(benzylideneamino)-phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methyl-2Hpyran-2-one (HL) derived from o-phenylene diamines, dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and p-chloro benzaldehyde have been studied. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, IR, $^1H$-NMR, UV-vis and mass spectra. From the analytical data, the stiochiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:2 (metal:ligand) with octahedral geometry. The molar conductance values suggest the nonelectrolytic nature of metal complexes. The X-ray diffraction data suggests monoclinic crystal system for Ni(II) and orthorhombic crystal system for Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes. The IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as tridentate ligand with ONN donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. Thermal behavior (TG/DTA) and kinetic parameters calculated by Coats-Redfern method suggests more ordered activated state in complex formation. The protonation constants of the complexes were determined potentiometrically in THF:water (60:40) medium at $25^{\circ}C$ and ionic strength ${\mu}=0.1\;M$ ($NaClO_4$). Antibacterial activities in vitro were performed against Staphylococcus aureu and Escherichia coli. Antifungal activities were studied against Aspergillus Niger and Trichoderma. The effect of the metal ions and stabilities of complexes on antimicrobial activities are discussed.
We evaluated the potential of 20 herbal medications (HMs), commonly used in Korea, to inhibit the catalytic activities of several cytochrome P450 (CYP) isoforms. The abilities of 500 ${\mu}g/ml$ of aqueous extracts of 20 HMs to inhibit phenacetin O-deethylation (CYP1A2), coumarin 6-hydroxylation (CYP2A6), bupropion hydroxylation (CYP2B6), rosiglitazone hydroxylation (CYP2C8), tolbutamide 4-methylhydroxylation (CYP2C9), S-mephenytoin 4'-hydroxylation (CYP2C19), dextromethorphan O-demethylation (CYP2D6), chlorzoxazone 6-hydroxylation (CYP2E1), and midazolam 1'-hydroxylation (CYP3A) were tested using human liver microsomes. The HMs Woohwangcheongsimwon suspension and Hwanglyeonhaedok-Tang strongly inhibited CYP2B6 and CYP2D6 isoform activity, respectively. These results suggest that some of the HMs used in Korea have potential to inhibit CYP isoforms in vitro. Although the plasma concentrations of the active constituents of the HMs were not determined, some herbs could cause clinically significant interactions because the usual doses of those individual herbs are several grams of freeze-dried extracts.
Antioxidative activities of ethanol extracts of seed, branch, leaves, and aerial part of Crotalaria sessiflora L. were compared using in vitro experimental model. Solid contents of each extracts were 12.68, 16.28, 13.04, and 18.59 g/ 100 mL, and phenolic acid contents were $0.082{\pm}0.003,\;0.099{\pm}0.010,\;0.071{\pm}0.002,\;and\;0.094{\pm}0.011\;mg/mL$ in branch, aerial part, seed, and leaves, respectively. Extracts prepared from leaves showed highest electron-donating ability toward DPPH. SOD-liked activities were 78.95, 70.85, 74.65, and 87.49% in aerial part, branch, seed, an leaves respectively. Extracts prepared from leaves showed 59.39% inhibitory effect on peroxidation of egg yolk lecithin.

To investigate the antigenotoxicity of Korean mistletoe using Comet assay, the crude extract was divided into 4 fractions, i.e. fraction I (MW range over 14,000), fraction II $(8,000{\sim}14,000)$, fraction III $(3,500{\sim}8,000)$, and fraction IV (below 3,500) by molecular weight fractionation. In the non-tumoral 3T3 cells, fraction IV could reduce DNA damage induced by MNNG in a dose dependent pattern while fraction I and III which were known to contain lectins and viscotoxins, respectively, did not show the activity. By heat treatment, the antigenotoxic activity of faction IV, though was gradually diminished according to heating time, was found to be maintained significantly. From the Sephadex G-25 gel filtration chromatography, a more purified fraction responsible for the activity of faction IV was obtained from the latter part of total elute. Therefore, it was concluded that the antigenotoxic components of Korean mistletoe were water soluble substances of MW below 1,000 and there is a possibility of utilization as a material of functional foods for chemoprevention.
Zaltoprofen, a propionic acid derivative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is known to have powerful inhibitory effects on acute, subacute and chronic inflammation. We developed poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA) microspheres loaded with zaltoprofen for sustained controlled delivery using an oil-water solvent evaporation methods by varying PLGA molecular weight and cosurfactant contents. Physicochemical properties and morphology of zaltoprofen-loaded PLGA microspheres were investigated by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter. The size of microspheres increased with the molecular weight of PLGA and the content of cosurfactants. The increase of PLGA molecular weight and cosurfactant content decreased the porosity of microspheres, subsequently resulting in the slow drug release. The results demonstrated that the adjustment of PLGA molecular weight and the cosurfactant content allowed us to control the drug release profiles of drug-loaded microspheres.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a well-known herb that is widely consumed as spice for the flavoring of foods. As part of our continuing search for bioactive materials, the in vitro pancreatic lipase inhibition and antioxidant properties of an aqueous ethanolic extract of Z. officinale were investigated. The total phenolic content was determined using a spectrophotometric method. The antioxidant efficacies of the extract was studied with radical scavenging assays using DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radicals. Further more, the antiobesity effect of the extract was evaluated by porcine pancreatic lipase assay. In particularly, the pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity of the ethyl acetate (EtOAc)-soluble portion from Z. officinale was significantly higher than that of the other solvent-soluble portions. The results suggest that Z. officinale may have therapeutic potential that may be useful in development of an anti-obesity agent or its precursors.
