  • A study was conducted to determine the effects of maturity at harvest and wilting days on the quality of round baled rye (Secale cereale L.) silage. This study was a $3{\times}3$ factorial arrangement in a split plot design with 3 replicates. The main plot was 3 harvesting dates at the stage of boot (20 Apr.), heading (29 Apr.) and flowering (14 May). The subplot was wilting day : 0 (unwilted), 0.5 and 1 day (0, 1, and 2 days at boot stage). Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) contents of rye silage were significantly greater than those of rye before ensiling, but crude protein (CP) content and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were vice versa. Buffering capacity (BC) of rye harvested at flowering stage was decreased from 264 to 202 meq/kg at 1 day wilting, however, it was increased when harvested at boot or heading stage. The pH in wilted silage was the highest while that of flowering stage was the lowest. Water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content of wilting rye was lower than that of unwilted, and the lowest at late harvesting stage. All plots had minimal WSC content for silage fermentation. Wilting treatment and delayed harvesting date caused an increase in dry matter (DM) content of round bale silage. The content of ammonia-N expressed as a portion of total N showed negative correlation with DM content. High quality silage according to ammonia-N content could be obtained from mid-harvest with wilting. There were highly significant differences in each organic acid between harvesting dates and wilting periods. Acetic and butyric acid contents were increased with delayed harvesting and prolonged wilting period, the lactic acid content, however, was decreased. This study demonstrated that harvest of rye from heading to flowering stage with wilting would be a recommendable method for making high quality rye silage using round bale system.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dry matter intake, weight gain and the required area of grazing pasture for dairy goats. The experimental trials were conducted from April, 2007 to June, 2008 at the animal experimental station in Chungnam National University. The seed mixtures of grazing pasture were composed of orchardgrass (40%) + tall fescue (20%) + perennial ryegrass (10%) + alfalfa (15%) + red clover (15%). The grazing area was $5,000\;m^2$ which was composed of 4 paddocks (average $1,250\;m^2$/plot) and the goats were grazed twelve times by a rotational grazing system. The dairy goats (Saanen) were selected which had nearly the same body weight (average 31.1kg). The average chemical composition of herbage of mixture in grazing periods was crude protein (20.4%), NDF (65.3%) and ADF (31.1%) respectively and the in vitro dry matter digestibility was 68.9%. The average dry matter intake amount per head was 1.253 kg, and the intake amount per body weight was 3.01%. The average body weight gain during the grazing periods (184 days) was 17.4 kg, and the daily gain was 98 g. The required area of grazing pasture was calculated at $467.7\;m^2$ a dairy goat (weight 50 kg basis). This figure, being converted into animal unit (AU), corresponded to approximately 2.14 AU/ha.

  • To clarify the potentiality of sea cucumbers as dietary food, the effects of those glycoprotein on dietary proteins and physicochemical properties of those proteins were studied. Crude glycoprotein was efficiently extracted using 20mM sodium phosphate beffer(pH 7.0) and by salting out with 80% ammoniym sulfate saturation. The fractions obtained through the DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography was identified as glycoprotein by Schiff's reagent and SDS polyacrylanide gel electro-phoresis. The yields of each glycoprotein from the three kinds of sea cucumbers were 0.814(red), 0.184(blue) and 0.232(black) and the molecular weights of the glycoproteins subunits were ranged from 20,000 dalton(blue and black) to 29,000 dalton(red), respectively. The electrophoretic patterns of the glycoprotein isolates were similar to each other and any significant difference in amino acid pattern was observed. Predominant arnino scids were Asx(aspartic acid and asparagine) and Glx(glutamic acid and glutamine) ; in contrast, histidine and methionine were below 2% as compared to total amino acids. water holding capacities of the glycoprotein isolates from red, blue and black cucumbers were equally 100% and emulsion activities ranged from 53% to 64%. In addition the emulsion stabilities were 7.04, 1.37 and 2.44, respectively. In vitro digestibility of some proteins(casein, SPI and squid) was decreased as increasing the level of the freeze dried sea cucumber powder and glycoprotein isolates. But squid protein was not affected.

  • 'Lucky one' is a new orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) variety developed by the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in 2014. Four superior clones were selected and polycrossed for seed production to develope this new variety of orchardgrass. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage productivity of 'Lucky one' were examined at Cheonan from 2010 to 2011. Regional adaption trials were conducted in Cheonan, Hoengseong, Jinju, and Jeju from 2012 to 2014. 'Lucky one' showed growth habit of medium type in fall and spring. It has short flag leaf length with long upper internode. Plant height of 'Lucky one' was 3 cm more than that of control variety, 'Amba'. Its heading date was 2 days later than that of control variety 'Amba'. Characteristics such as waterlogging and disease resistance of 'Lucky one' were stronger or better than those of control variety, 'Amba', Especially, dry matter yield of 'Lucky one' (16,191 kg/ha) was increased 38% compared to that of control variety, 'Amba'(11,778 kg/ha). Nutritive feed values of 'Lucky one' appeared to be similar to those of control variety 'Amba' except in Vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and crude protein content.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of different sowing dates and cultivars on the forage yield and quality of winter rye (Secale cereale L.). The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of two sowing dates such as early (15 September) and late (30 September). The subplots consisted of rye cultivars of five different maturity groups such as 'Kodiak' (Late), 'Koolgrazer' (Early), 'Danko' (Late), 'Homil22' (Medium) and 'Olhomi1' (Early). Dry matter (DM) content at early sowing (19.7%) was higher than those at late sowing (17.8%), while crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) contents at early sowing (16.6% and 61.6%) were lower than those at late sowing (16.8% and 63.1%). Although DM content of early maturing cultivars (Koolgrazer and Olhomi1) was higher than the other cultivars, CP and TDN contents of those were lower compared to other cultivars. The contents of fiber components (ADF, NDF and cellulose) at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, while ADL and hemicellulose at early sowing were lower than those at late sowing. ADF and cellulose of early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars, while ADL and hemicellulose of Danko were higher than that of the other cultivars. DM, CP, In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and TDN yields at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, and early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars. Results of this study indicate that forage production technology in combination with early sowing and use of early maturing rye cultivar could enhance both production and quality of rye.

  • The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of moisture content on the haylage quality of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). Seven levels of moisture content (60%, 55%, 50%, 45%, 40%, 35%, and 30%) were tested in this experiment. The results show that the feed value, crude-protein content, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and in vitro dry-matter digestibility were not significantly different as the moisture content decreased. The pH and lactic-acid content, however, decreased significantly as the moisture content decreased, whereas the content of acetic and butyric acid increased significantly. We concluded that a moisture content within a range from 60% to 40% is best for Italian-ryegrass haylage.

  • This experiment was carried out during 1983-1984 to determine an effective method for the introduction of pasture species on nonarable hill country without cultivation. In this experiment, 1.8 and 2.8kg a.i. $ha^{-1}$ rates of glyphosate and a 0.7kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ rate of paraquat were applied, and also 30, 45 and 60 days intervals between spraying and sowing were used. Establishment of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) was not affected by the application of herbicides, but that of ladino clover (Trifolium repens) was significantly affected by glyphosate and paraquat. It was found that glyphosate and paraquat have no apparent soil residual activity or pre-emergence effect when sprayed 30 to 60 days before sowing. Dry matter yield of pasture species on the herbicide treatments was significantly higher than that on the unsprayed treatments. The highest yield was obtained from the 1.8kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ rate of glyphosate 45 days before sowing. Botanical analysis at the final cut showed that the shrubs and native grass of original site were reduced to 5% by glyphosate application, but those on the unsprayed control were still 51%. Crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility of herbage on the herbicide treatments were higher than those on the unsprayed treatments. Results indicated that glyphosate was more effective to control resident shrubs and grass than paraquat, and good establishment and higher yield of surface-sown pasture species can be obtained by spraying 1.8 to 2.8kg a.i.$ha^{-1}$ of glyphosate, 30 to 45 days before sowing.

The results of this study were as follows : Crude protein was 6.00∼7.89% for oak browse and 5.15∼6.06% for pine browse sampled through July to October, It gradually decreased in oak browse but not in pine browse as the growth of tree was progressed stages. Crude fat content of oak and pine browse were 1.90∼2.68% and 6.30∼6.33%. Crude fiber content was 33.3∼35.2% for oak browse and 33.7∼34.8% for pine browse and they tended to increase according to the growth stage of trees. Crude ash was 3.13∼2.78% for oak browse and 2.11 ∼1.93% for pine browse, respectively. Ca, Mg, Mn and Cu content were higher in oak browse than those in pine browse, but P, K, Na, Fe, and Zn content were similar each other. Mineral contents were decreased as the growth of tree was progressed(P<.05). Acid detergent fiber content of pine and oak browse were 47.7∼52.0% and 46.1∼48.1%, and they increased as the tree grew. Neutral detergent fiber content of pine and oak browse were 64.1∼67.9% and 65.0∼66.5%. NDF content was increased according to the tree growth in pine browse but it was the same in oak browse(P<.05). in vitro digestibility of dry matter was 51.7∼48.4% for pine browse that decreased according to the tree growth(p<.05) and 53.0∼5l.4% for oak browse. Total digestible nutrients of oak browse was 50.9∼52.4% and that of pine browse was 47.7∼51.1% which decreased as the tree grew. Oak browse showed the same relative feeding value(RFV) as pine browse, and it decreased as the growth of tree was progressed(P<.05). Tannin contents was 2.96% for oak browse, 6.27% for pine browse. Tannin contents decreased when browses were dried.
