  • This study examined the effects of demographic variables and psychological mechanisms (self-efficacy, need for closure, and fashion innovativeness) on each of the four types of impulsive buying, including suggestion impulsive buying, stimulus impulsive buying, pure impulsive buying, and reminder impulsive buying. In addition, the study analyzed the impact these four types had on evaluations after impulsive buying (i.e., diversion in mood, regret for buying decision and a sense of financial loss, and dissatisfaction of products). Data was collected by a marketing research company from five hundreds consumers in seven different cities of South Korea who experienced impulsive buying in the off-line apparel stores within the past three months. The results of regression analyses indicated that self-efficacy and gender significantly affected suggestion impulsive buying. That is, the higher consumers' self-efficacy, the greater their suggestion impulsive buying was. In addition, women had higher Suggestion Impulsive Buying than men did. However, in case of Stimulus Impulsive Buying, gender was the only significant antecedent. That is, women had higher stimulus impulsive buying than men did. In terms of pure impulsive buying, fashion innovativeness was a significant predictor, and for the reminder impulsive buying level, fashion innovativeness and need for closure were significant predictors. Finally, pure and suggestion impulsive buying were correlated with positive consumer evaluations, while both stimulus and reminder impulsive buyings were correlated with negative consumer evaluations. Implications and future studies were discussed.

  • This study explored the level and general propensity of consumption-oriented attitude and impulsive buying behavior of high school students, and clarified factors affecting impulsive buying. The research results can be summarized as follows. 1. The degree of consumption-oriented attitude and impulsive buying behavior of high school students were relatively low. 2. Consumption-oriented attitude was found to have significant differences among students based on monthly allowance, self-esteem, influence of friends, influence of mass media and influence of consumer education at school. Moreover, impulsive buying behavior was found to have significant differences according to sex, level of parents's education, fathers job, monthly household income, monthly allowance, influence of home, influence of friends and influence of mass media. 3. The impulsive buying differed significantly according to consumption-oriented attitude. That is, the group showing a higher degree of consumption-oriented attitude also indicated higher impulsive buying. 4. The variables affecting the level of impulsive buying behavior were the level of consumption-oriented attitude, influence of mass media, influence of friends and sex. In other words, consumption-oriented attitude, influence of mass media and influence of friends had a positive affect, and female students were more apt to impulsive buying than male students.

  • This study examined what differences were shown in the types of impulsive buying according to consumers' viewing circumstance, previous purchasing experience, and demographic factors on CATV home-shopping. For this study, data were obtained from adult women in twenties to fifties who have frequently viewed CATV home-shopping. The questionnaire was composed of three sections; characteristics of home-shopping usage, behaviors of impulsive buying and demographic factors. Data from 403 questionnaires were used for the statistical analysis. The results of this study were as following. First, four factors of impulsive buying types were identified. Second, differences in impulsive buying according to viewing circumstance of TV home-shopping were significant. New products were easily accepted by consumers who were reminded of previous needs with more viewing time and frequent viewing chances. Also, differences in impulsive buying according to the reason of viewing were meaningful only for the 'reminder impulsive buying. Third, consumers with more previous purchase experiences had higher reminder impulsive buying on home-shopping. Fourth, there were significant differences in age and marital status according to impulsive buying. The biggest difference was shown in the 'planned impulsive buying' corresponding to age and in the 'reminder impulsive buying' to marital status.

  • Impulsive buying behavior is an important aspect of consumer behavior and is of significant interest to researchers and retail management alike. It is a familiar from of in-apparel store behavior because of its social-psychological characteristics. The objectives of this study were to find out the variable(5) influencing impulsive and non-impulsive buying behavior, as well as to investigate the causal relationships between variables related to impulsive buying behaviors in boutiques. A questionnaire was completed by 345 boutiques customers in Busan, Korea. Demographics showed that consumers were more educated and had higher incomes than average consumers in Korea. Data was analysed by discriminant analysis and path analysis. Results showed that "Clothing involvement" was the most influencing variable determined impulsive buying behavior. "Self-monitoring" proved negatively influencing on impulsive buying behavior in boutiques. Consumers with low interest in apparel reacted positively to the in-store purchasing situation, and did negatively to their affective factors. As a result, they provided the useful information for consumer behavior researchers and boutiques retailers.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the impulsive purchasing tendency of Korean and U.S. college students. In particular, the study examined the effects of self-regulated learning and self-regulated consumption on college students' impulsive buying tendency. A total of 680 valid samples were obtained from online self-reported surveys in Korea and the United States. Both self-regulated learning and self-regulated consumption (self-control and self-supervision) were higher in US college students than Korean students. Self-regulated learning did not influence impulsive purchasing tendency. However, the impulsive purchasing tendency increased as the level of self-supervision among self-regulated consumption decreased. When purchases were made in stores, impulsive purchasing tendency increased in both South Korea and the US. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts to decrease the impulsive purchasing tendency by fostering self-regulated consumption capacity of college students through consumer education.

  • As there is impulsive buying that is pervasive phenomenon in the clothing consumption area, many academics and practitioners have been interested in it. Although prior studies have provided useful insights for understanding and predicting consumers' impulsive behavior, the findings do not clearly explain why different consumers influence impulsive behavior differently even when presented with the same shopping environment. Regulatory focus theory (Higgins, 1987, 1997, 2001) provides an insight for better understanding of consumers' impulsive responses to the elements of shopping experience. Thus, the purpose of our research was to understand the effect of consumers' regulatory focus (i.e., promotion focused vs. prevention focused) on their shopping experiences and impulsive behavior. A total of 157 data collected from female consumers lived in Ulsan and Pusan was used for this study. The results were as follows: First, sensitive experience and emotional experience have significantly positive effects on impulsive buying, but rational experience does significantly negatively effects on it. Second, to test the moderating effects of consumers' regulatory focus, responses were divided into two groups including promotion-focused group (n = 91) and prevention-focused group (n = 66) based on the relative strength of one type of their regulatory focus, which was introduced by Higgins (2001). Multiple regression analysis (independent variables: shopping experience, dependant variable: impulsive buying) was run within each group. The results showed that for the promotion-focused group, sensitive and emotional experience have significantly positive effects on impulsive buying. For prevention focused group, sensitive experience has significantly positive effects on impulsive buying and rational experience does significantly negatively effects on it. Chow's and Fisher's z-test were confirmed that the relationship between shopping experience and impulsive buying behavior was significantly different depending on consumers' regulatory focus.

  • The central purpose of this paper is to examine impulsive buying from home shopping channels and to investigate some stimulating factors of marketing on the customers' impulsive buying. on TV. Survey questionnaires were given to 303 customers who have purchased products through TV home shopping more than once. We report the following findings. First, we find that product stimuli factors exert an effect on impulsive buying of fashion goods, but not of specialty goods. Second, of the two promotion stimuli factors a bonus pack and an extended payment period-the latter is shown to have a great effect. Third, in the case of price stimuli factors, concrete stimuli such as a discount range have a greater influence than abstract stimuli such as a reliable pricing. Finally, in the area of situational stimuli factors, speeches of show hosts have a bigger impact than buying situations such as limit selling. We believe that the current research provides a significant result, theoretically and practically, with respect to customers' behavior in TV home shopping. The methodological limitation involving samples and sampling method and the regional limitation make it difficult to generalize the findings. It should be worthy classifying and managing marketing stimuli. More practical research is in order.

  • Cable TV Home Shopping is one of the popular distribution channels in modem society because of purchasing convenience and saving in shopping time. However, in spite of these advantages, there are some problems because of marketing strategies of many Cable TV shopping companies which stimulate impulse purchases. This study is aimed to find the relationship between buying experience and reaction to impulsive buying stimulus. This study can give a valuable insight in consumer education regarding impulsive purchase behavior in Cable TV home shopping. Study results can also give useful information on the direction of consumer campaign and consumer protection policies. The data was collected by using a questionnaire and the final 496 cases were analyzed by SPSS Win 10.0 program. The major finding were that: 1. Younger, more educated and unmarried consumers tend to response more to impulsive purchasing stimulus. 2. consumers with higher response to impulsive purchasing stimulus had more buying experience, higher shopping frequencies and spent more money in Cable TV home shopping than consumers with lower response. These study results showed that there are some relationship between impulse purchasing stimulus and buying experience in Cable TV home shopping. Therefore, Cable TV Home Shopping companies should provide correct information to the consumers, so they can make resonable decisions. And the consumers should also try to restrain themselves from purchasing impulsively. A law that will regulate all false or exaggerated ads should be provided. To reach righteous and beneficial home shopping culture for both consumer and companies, all these means should be cooperated.
