  • In this paper, breaking waves are generated in a 2-D wave tank and simulated by using a higher-order boundary element method. A piston-type wavemaker is operated by signals composed of elementary waves. The phase of elementary waves is determined by the linear theory such that they are focused to a prescribed position. Calculated plunging waves coincide well with experiment. A steel box with different plate thicknesses is installed at a predetermined position in the tank. Measured impulsive pressures due to breaking waves are found to be 0.8-1.2$\rho$C2, where $\rho$ corresponds to water density and C to wave celerity. The transverse displacement of the plate is described in terms of modal eigenfunctions. The natural frequencies measured by impact tests in air for thin plate coincide with the computational and theoretical values. The radiationpotential due to plate vibration is derived and the radiation force is expressed in terms of hydroelastic added mass and damping forces. Comparison of natural frequencies of plate in water proves that hydroelastic added mass and damping are properly considered. The measured strain due to regular waves supports the calculated one, but there are apparent discrepancies between theory and experiment in the impulsive case.

  • The dynamic responses of structure under impulsive loading have been investigated according to its duration, based on the theory of viscoplasticity which can appropriately represent the effects of plasticity and rheology simultaneously. The viscoplastic model has been implemented into the two-dimensional finite element system to solve plane stress, plane strain or axi-symmetric problems, and the implicit integration scheme, of which solutions are unconditionally stable for relatively large time step length, has been developed to simulate visoplastic straining with deriving the explicit relationship between stress and strain at a material point level. After simulation, one carefully concludes that the duration as well as magnitude of impulsive loading plays an important role in design of structures.

  • On this research, we classified Korean consumers into several comsumer groups based on the different decision-making process they endorse, and then investigated the difference among these consumer groups in frequency, expenditure, satisfaction in using different types of retail stores. For this research, we have surveyed consumers dwelling in Seoul and in near-Seoul areas in 2004. The following is the summary of the main results. First, 'enjoy shopping' group showed a high expenditure rate in department store shopping and internet shopping, whereas 'impulsive decision' group more frequently visited traditional market places, 'fashion pursuing' group and 'enjoy shopping' group visited department stores more frequently than traditional market places. Second, 'impulsive decision' group assessed that the traditional market place offers better price and quality. Also 'impulsive decision' group and 'enjoy shopping' group assessed positively on the AS provided by department stores, and assessed negatively on the AS provided by internet shopping malls. Finally, 'fashion pursuer' group preferred buying foods from traditional market places, while 'brand seeker' group and 'fashion pursuer' group preferred buying clothes from discount stores. While 'enjoy shopping' group showed a high preference in buying clothes in department stores, 'rational decision-making' group showed a low preference in buying clothes in department stores.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social face sensitivity on vanity and consumption behavior. Questionnaires were administered to 461 college students living in Deagu Metropolitan City and Kyungbook province. Frequency, factor analysis, reliability analysis, regression analysis, and t-test were used for data analysis. Social face sensitivity was categorized into consciousness of being embarrassed, social formality, other consciousness and prestigiousness. Vanity factors were found as physical price, achievement concern, achievement price, and physical concern. Consumption behavior were categorized into 5 factors such as ostentatious consumption, impulsive buying, external information search, brand trust, utilization of internet information and material-oriented. Consciousness of being embarrassed, social formality, and other consciousness, the sub-variables of social face sensitivity had significant effects on achievement concerns and physical concerns. Other consciousness of social face sensitivity had significant effects on all factors of consumption behaviors. There was significant differences in the prestige of social face sensitivity and physical concerns of vanity and ostentatious consumption, impulsive buying, and also in external information search and utilization of internet information of consumer behavior. This indicates that women showed high physical concerns for vanity and ostentatious consumption, impulsive buying, external information search and utilization of internet information of consumption behavior while men care more about prestigiousness of social face sensitivity.

  • In this paper, a new detector is proposed for code acquisition, which employs the signs and ranks of the received signal samples, instead of their actual values, and so does not require knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion. The mean acquisition performance of the proposed detector is compared with that of the detector of $^{[1]}$. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is not only robust to deviations from the true value of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion, but also has comparable performance to that of the scheme of $^{[1]}$ using exact knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise dispersion.

  • We derive decision regions of the maximum likelihood(ML) and suboptimum ML(S-ML) detectors in the first order moving average(FOMA) of an impulsive process. The ML and S-ML detectors are compared in terms of the bit-error-rate in the antipodal signaling system. Numerical results show that the S-ML detector, despite its reduced complexity and simpler structure, exhibits practically the same performance as the optimum ML detector. It is also shown that the performance gap between detectors for FOMA and independent and identically distributed noise becomes larger as the degree of noise impulsiveness increases.

  • This paper proposes an efficient algorithm based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to determine the presence of impulsive noise in the given environment. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Chi-Square tests are known in the literature to serve as a goodness-of-fit test especially for a testing for normality of the distribution. But these algorithms are difficult to implement in practice due to high complexity. The proposed algorithm gives a significant reduction of the computational complexity while decreasing the error probability of hypothesis test, which is shown in the simulation results. Also, it is worth noting that the proposed algorithm is not dependent on the noise environment.

  • The Morison's formula has been commonly used in the determination of wave forces of sinusoidal waves acting on coastal or ocean structures of pile-supported type. In the case that plunging breakers are incident, the structures are subjected to impulsive breaking wave forces which are normally much larger than the Morison's. However, the impulsive breaking wave forces act in a very short time, and hence a dynamic structural analysis should be done to determine whether or not to include the forces in the design force items. In the present study, numerical methods for calculating the dynamic response of a vertically located cylindrical pile are developed. Static and dynamic displacements are then compared through several example analyses varying the structural properties of pile.

  • The maximum cross-correntropy (MCC) algorithm with a set of random symbols keeps its optimum weights undisturbed from impulsive noise unlike MSE-based algorithms and its main factor has been known to be the input magnitude controller (IMC) that adjusts the input intensity according to error power. In this paper, a normalization of the step size of the MCC algorithm by the power of IMC output is proposed. The IMC output power is tracked recursively through a single-pole low-pass filter. In the simulation under impulsive noise with two different multipath channels, the steady state MSE and convergence speed of the proposed algorithm is found to be enhanced by about 1 dB and 500 samples, respectively, compared to the conventional MCC algorithm.

  • The optimal structure of the Tonpilz transducer was designed. First, the FE model of the transducer was constructed, that included all the details of the transducer which used practical environment. The validity of the FE model was verified through the impedance analysis of the transducer. Second, the resonance frequency, the sound pressure, the bandwidth, and the impulsive shock pressure of the transducer in relation to its structural variables were analyzed. Third, the design method of $2^n$ experiments was employed to reduce the number of analysis cases, and through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, the functional forms of the transducer performances that could consider the cross-coupled effects of the structural variables were derived. Based on the all results, the optimal geometry of the Tonpilz transducer that had the highest sound pressure level at the desired working environment was determined through the optimization with the SQP-PD method of a target function composed of the transducer performance. Furthermore, for the convenience of a user, the automatic process program making the optimal structure of the acoustic transducer automatically at a given target and a desired working environment was made. The developed method can reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple structural variables, and can be extended to the design of general acoustic transducers.
