  • Noises are usually generated by various external causes and low quality devices in image data acquisition and recording as well as by channel interference in image transmission. Since these noise signals result in the loss of information, subsequent image processing is subject to the corruption of the original image. In general, image processing is performed in the mixed noise environment where common types of noise, known to be Gaussian and impulse, are present. This study proposes an iterative weighted mean filter for reducing mixed type of noise. Impulse noise pixels are first turned off in the input image, then $3{\times}3$ sliding window regions are processed by replacing center pixel with the result of weighted mean mask operation. This filtering processes are iterated until all the impulse noise pixels are replaced. Applied to images corrupted by Gaussian noise with ${\sigma}=10$ and different levels of impulse noise, the proposed filtering method improved the PSNR by up to 12.98 dB, 1.97 dB, 1.97 dB respectively, compared to SAWF, AWMF, MMF when impulse noise desities are less than 60%.

  • The impulse noise of bullet after shooting in small arms has an effect on the hearing ability of human. Although a silencer has been developed for noise reduction in small arms, there is only a few researches about relationships between the sound pressure level and the auditory sense of human. In this study, the quantitative sound pressure levels are revealed by experimental measurements of impulse noise with each silencer type. And the performance evaluation for noise suppression of a silencer in small arms is carried out to reduce a serious loss of the hearing ability of the small arms user. It is concluded that the evaluated results can be utilized for checking sound pressure and data accumulation for new small arms design with silencer.

  • In this paper we present a generalized directional morphological filtering algorithm for the removal of impulse noise, which is based on a combination of impulse noise detection and a weighted rank-order morphological filtering technique. For salt (or pepper) noise suppression, the generalized directional opening (or closing) filtering of the input signal is selectively used. The detection of impulse noise can be done by the geometrical difference of opening and closing filtering. Simulations show that this new filter has better detail feature preservation with effective noise reduction compared to other nonlinear filtering techniques.

  • As the society develops to advanced digital information times, many studies are underway about digital video processing technology areas such as image restoration. There are typical methods to restore the image which have been damaged by the impulse noise like SM(standard median) filter and CWM(center weighted median) filter. These filters show excellent noise reduction capabilities in low noise density areas, but in high noise density areas, noise reduction capabilities are not sufficient. In this paper, in order to restore the degraded images in impulse(Salt & Pepper) noise environment, the image restoration filter algorithm was suggested which expands and subdivide the mask focusing on damaged pixels. And to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm used PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) as the standard of judgement.

  • In this paper, the SEM image processing system based on PC is designed, and a new noise reduction filtering algorithm is proposed. The SEM image obtained in semiconductor processing line is sensitive to noise, the weighted-D filter can remove uniform and Gaussian noise effectively, but can not remove impulse noise properly, A new improved filtering algorithm is proposed to reduce mixed-noise. The performance of the proposed filter is quantitatively evaluated by use of the normalized mean square errors (NMSE). The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed filter is obtained between 0.96 and 2.5 times better than that of weighted-D filter in NMSE evaluation.

  • With the development of IoT technology, various technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation are being grafted into industrial sites, and accordingly, the importance of data processing is increasing. In particular, a system based on a digital image may cause a malfunction due to noise in the image due to a sensor defect or a communication environment problem. Therefore, research on image processing has been continued as a pre-processing process, and an effective noise reduction technique is required depending on the type of noise and the characteristics of the image. In this paper, we propose a modified spatial weight filter to protect edge components in the impulse noise reduction process. The proposed algorithm divides the filtering mask into four regions and calculates the standard deviation of each region. The final output was filtered by applying a spatial weight to the region with the lowest standard deviation value. Simulation was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, and it showed superior impulse noise reduction performance compared to the existing method.

  • In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear synthesis filter for noise reduction to reduce the effects of Gaussian noise and impulse noise. When the centralization of the local mask is judged to be Gaussian noise by the noise judgment, the weight value of the weight filter are applied differently according to the spatial weight filter and the pixel change by using the sample variance in the local mask. And if it is determined as the impulse noise, we proposed an algorithm that applies different weights of local histogram weight filter and standard median filter according to noise density of mask. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed filter algorithm, we used PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio) and compared existing methods and proposed filter algorithm in the mixed noise environment with Gaussian noise, impulsive noise, and two noises mixed.

  • In this paper an efficient morphologica algorithm for reducing gaussian and impulse noise in gray-scale image is presented. Based on the edge information the input image is partitioned into a flat region and an edge region, then different algorithms are selectively applied to each region. in case of impulse noise, MGR (morphologica grayscale reconstruction) algorithm with directional SE (structuring element) is applied to the flat region. For theedge region opening-closing (closing-opening) is used instead of dialation (erosion), so that the remaining noise around large objects can be removed. In case of gaussian noise, 5*5 OCCO(opening closing closing opening) and 3*3 DMF(directional morphological filter ) are used for the flat region and the edgeregion, respectively. In order to remove discontinuity at the edge boundary, the algorithm uses 3*3 OCCO around the edge region to reconstruct the final image. Experimetnal results have shown that the proposed algorithm achieves a high performance in terms of noise removal, detail preservation, and NMSE.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid filter for noise reduction. The proposed method adjusts rational filtering direction according to an edge in the image using median filtered data. Rational filter modulates the coefficients of a linear lowpass filter to limit its action in presence of image details. By the ratio of polynomials in the input variables, rational filter reduces noise adaptively. Median filter is widely used to reduce impulse noise, but removes some details for highly corrupted images. Also, desirable details are removed when the window size is large. Our proposed algorithm combines rational filter and median filter. Thus, proposed method not only preserves edge, but also reduces noise in uniform region. Experimental results show that our proposed method has better quality than those by existing median and rational filtering methods.
