Critical earthquake input energy to connected building structures using impulse input

  • A frequency-domain method is developed for evaluating the earthquake input energy to two building structures connected by viscous dampers. It is shown that the earthquake input energies to respective building structures and viscous connecting dampers can be defined as works done by the boundary forces between the subsystems on their corresponding displacements. It is demonstrated that the proposed energy transfer function is very useful for clear understanding of dependence of energy consumption ratios in respective buildings and connecting viscous dampers on their properties. It can be shown that the area of the energy transfer function for the total system is constant regardless of natural period and damping ratio because the constant Fourier amplitude of the input acceleration, relating directly the area of the energy transfer function to the input energy, indicates the Dirac delta function and only an initial velocity (kinetic energy) is given in this case. Owing to the constant area property of the energy transfer functions, the total input energy to the overall system including both buildings and connecting viscous dampers is approximately constant regardless of the quantity of connecting viscous dampers. This property leads to an advantageous feature that, if the energy consumption in the connecting viscous dampers increases, the input energies to the buildings can be reduced drastically. For the worst case analysis, critical excitation problems with respect to the impulse interval for double impulse (simplification of pulse-type impulsive ground motion) and multiple impulses (simplification of long-duration ground motion) are considered and their solutions are provided.

  • Impact hammer is widely used as a convenient excitation tool in structural modal testing though, little is known about the dynamic characteristics of its impulse mechanism. Transmission of the impulsive force to the structure depends m the dynamic properties of the impact hammer as well as the stiffness of the tip. In this study an improved dynamic model of the impact hammer is proposed with the consideration of structure to be tested. The deformation masses of hammer tip and structure are as well as their contact stiffness. Numerical results show that this model is useful for the prediction of the impulse duration and the condition of rebounce..

  • In this paper an approach for the analysis of the transient field response of radially symmetric transducer due to a wideband ultrasonic pulse is presented, which is based on a development of Green's function and applies the linear system theory to obtain an analytic expression for the impulse response of an annulus with a planar or spherical geometry. For the focused annular array, the impulse responses of the indivisual annuli are convolved with the delayed excitation pulse, and then summed to obtain the resultant response of the array. This process is very effective in the study of the various focusing abilities of the annular array. For illustration, the field distribution of a five element annular array is treated in detail for several focusing system.

  • This paper introduces the experimental results of sloshing model tests carried out at Seoul National University. Two 1/50-scale tanks, i.e., 2D and 3D models with the same shape, were manufactured for the comparative study. Particular interest was taken in the differences in impact pressures between the 2D and 3D models. Regular motion tests were conducted for different filling depths. For each filling depth, 500 cycles of regular excitation were imposed at each frequency. To observe the characteristics and severity of sloshing from the acquired pressure data, statistical analyses were performed, not only for the peak pressure, but also for the area-concept indices, which represented the amount of impulse.

  • The signals that can be obtained from rotating machines often convey the information of machine. For example, if the machine under investigation has faults, then these signals often have pulse signals, embedded in noise. Therefore the ability to detect the fault signal in noise is major concern of fault diagnosis of rotating machine, In this paper, minimum variance cepstrum (MV cepstrum) . which can easily detect impulse in noise, has been applied to detect the type of faults of ball bearing system. To test the performance of this technique. various experiments have been performed for ball bearing elements that have man made faults. Results show that minimum variance cepstrum can easily detect the periodicity due to faults and also shows the pattern of excitation by the faults.

  • Action potential의 본체는 cochlear nerve의 섬유집합의 주기적 흥분을 보이는 전위변화(복합활동전위)를 말한다. 와우신경섬유의 흥분인 impulse wave-form은 음양(N.P,)의 bipolar wave-form을 나타내기 때문에 A.P.도 이상성 wave-form으로 나타난다. 기계적으로나 약물로 내외모세포를 파괴한 가묘의 고실계에 induction coil을 삽입하고 동시에 outer device를 통해서 준 음자극에 의하여 얻은 파형을 분석 보고한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 음파를 이용하여 덕트 내 길이 방향으로의 불균일 단면적을 역문제적으로 측정하는 방법에 대해서 연구하였다. 음파를 사사용하여 덕트 단면적을 구하는 이론 및 실험방법 등에 대해서 많은 연구가 되어왔으나, 본 연구에서는 덕트 내 충격응답을 구하고 이를 재구성 알고리즘에 대입하여 덕트 내 단면적을 구하는 방법을 채택하였다. 충격 가진을 통하여 덕트 내 충격응답을 구하는 기존 방법의 문제점을 살펴보았고, 광대역 가진 방법을 새로 제안하였다. 실험 및 이론적 고찰을 통하여 새로운 방법이 기존의 방법보다 면적 재구성 오차가 적음을 보였다. 덕트 단면적을 재구성 할 때의 오차 원인과 불규칙 잡음에 의한 오차범위를 파악하기 위하여 오차해석을 수행하여 음파를 이용한 면적 재구성 방법의 적용범위 및 대상을 명확히 하였다.

  • In this paper, the case studies of reducing rotational errors is theoretically done for a grinding spindle with an active magnetic bearing system. The rotational errors acting on the magnetic bearing spindle are due to mass unbalance of rotor, runout, grinding excitation and unmodeled nonlinear dynamics of electromagnets. The adaptive feedforward method based on LMS algorithm is discussed to compensate output and input disturbances, and investigated its effectiveness by numerical simulation. The feedforward control reduced external excitation and rotational error for specified frequency. The interpolation method using impulse function for cancelling the electrical 'uncut is studied. These methods show their effectiveness for the rotational accuracy of the improving magnetic bearing spindle through some simulation results of the rotational error decreased by them.

  • For the identification of the 3 dimensional dynamic characteristics of the Bongjeong Temple, the dynamic test for 1/3 scaled model was performed. Dynamic test with impulse excitation and vibration table excitation can provide useful data for the estimation of dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, mode shapes and stiffness center. This will complement the previous research from the 2-dimensional static test and provide the reference data for the enhanced structural analysis of the traditional wooden structures.

New accuracy indicator to quantify the true and false modes for eigensystem realization algorithm

  • The objective of this paper is to apply a new proposed accuracy indicator to quantify the true and false modes for Eigensystem Realization Algorithm using output-based responses. First, a discrete mass-spring system and a simply supported continuous beam were modelled using finite element method. Then responses are simulated under random excitation. Natural Excitation Technique using only response measurements is applied to compute the impulse responses. Eigensystem Realization Algorithm is employed to identify the modal parameters on the simulated responses. A new accuracy indicator, Normalized Occurrence Number-NON, is developed to quantitatively partition the realized modes into true and false modes so that the false portions can be disregarded. Numerical simulation demonstrates that the new accuracy indicator can determine the true system modes accurately.
