  • Objectives Rate of gastroesophageal reflux disease accompanied by irritable bowel syndrome is on the increase. This case study reports significant improvement of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome who had suffered from chest pain, globus pharyngis and diarrhea after taking Sasang constitutional treatment. Methods This patient was diagnosed as Large Yin type Esophagus Cold pattern(Taeeumin Wiwanhanjeung). Herb medicine(Jowiseungcheong-tang) was taken by the patient, three or two times per day during treatment periods. We assessed the changes of the main symptoms such as chest pain, globus pharyngis, defecation discomfort, insomnia et al. using visual analogue scale(VAS). Results The symptoms of chest pain, globus pharyngis, defecation discomfort, insomnia decreased from VAS 7~8 to VAS 0~1 for about three months. Conclusions This case shows that Sasang constitutional medicine treatment can be effective treatment method for gastroesophageal reflux disease accompanied by irritable bowel syndrome.

  • Objectives The aim of this study was to report an improvement on the symptoms of Eosinophilic Colitis (EC) by Yeoldahanso-tang.Methods The patient was diagnosed with Taeumin Ganyeol-paeJo Symptomatology and treated with Yeoldahanso-tang. The gastroendoscopy and eosinophilic infitration of mucosa of colitis are investigated. Also patient's subjective symptom of abdominal pain was scored using the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) during the treatment period. And the number of defecation in a day is also used to decide the degree of colitis. Results and Conclusions The patient had been treated from December 13, 2014 to August 8, 2015. Eosinophilic infiltration of colon was disappeared after the treatment although chronic inflammation still existed. Subjective pain of abdominal pain was measured as NRS 6~8 at the beginning of the remedy, but diminished through the treatment sessions and became NRS 0 in the end. The number of defecation was in average 3, and at the endpoint it became 1. In conclusion, this study suggests that Sasang constitutional Medicine used for treating EC of Taeumin may be effective.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of supplementation with a Bifidobacteria enhanced yogurt (BE0623 yogurt), which includes Bifidobacterium lactis BB12, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Bifidobacterium lactis, in the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using animal models and clinical trials. In a rat study, a loperamide-treated group (LOP) showed reduced water content in fecal pellets but showed an increased number of fecal pellets in the distal colon. In addition, the BE0623 yogurt (L-BE0623Y) group had the fewest fecal pellets in the distal colon. Regarding the serum lipid parameters, the LOP group had a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)/total cholesterol ratio that was 43% lower than that of a normal water group (NOR), but the outcome for the L-BE0623Y group was 27% lower than the NOR group. In a human study, 116 adults with IBS were sampled as subjects and fed 300 mL of yogurt per day for an eight week period. There was an IBS improvement in the L-BE0623Y and commercial yogurt (L-CY) groups, though flatulence, stool consistency and frequency of defecation outcomes were also noted. Specifically, the L-BE0623Y treatment group showed significant effects with regard to defecation duration and urgency after the consumption of the yogurt used in this study. These results suggest that the Bifidobacteria-enhanced yogurt has superior effects with regard to relieving loperamide-induced constipation in rats and that regular consumption of L-BE0623Y is effective to improve IBS in humans.

Method: The data was collected from June 1 to July 30, 2005 at D Hospital in Busan. They were divided into two group: one experimental group of 18, and the another control group of 17. Meridian acupressure was given to the experimental group and no meridian acupressure was given to the control group. The data was analyzed using the t-test, ${\chi}^2-test$, Fisher exact, and repeated measures ANCOVA. Results: There was a significant improvement in frequency of defecation and severity of constipation in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Meridian acupressure can be considered an effective nursing method for the management of constipation among Cerebrovascular Accident patients.

  • The irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in clinical practice and is characterized by abdominal pain associated with a chronic disturbance of defecation. It is important to discriminate IBS from organic bowel disease. Based on clinical and epidemiologic studies, specific symptom criteria for IBS have been developed. The subject is a 29 year old man who has abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, general weakness, dizziness, insomnia and has been diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome. We classified this as Shaoyangin Mangyin(少陽人 亡陰證) and prescribed Hyeongbangjiwhangtang(荊防地黃湯) in accordance with the principle of pyoeumganggi(表陰降氣). In the result, we had the improvement of his symptoms.

Methods The patient was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, as well as western medicine. To evaluate the results of this treatment, the patient assessed discomfort of dyshidrosis by using Numeral Rating Scale(NRS), percentage(%) and we assessed severity of dyshidrosis by using Dyshidrotic Eczema Area and Severity Index(DASI). Results At the time of admission, the degree of discomfort in the dyshidrosis symptoms was NRS 8 and the severity of dyshidrosis was DASI 16(moderate). After the treatment, her symptoms was improved(NRS 0, DASI 0). Sleep, digestion and defecation condition were also improved. Discussion The patient who had frequent recurrence showed a significant improvement of dyshidrosis and accessory symptoms without any side effects, who was treated with Hyeongbangdojeok-san, acupuncture and western medicine.

  • Three dogs with severe traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) due to falling wound were admitted to the Veterinary Medical Center, Chonbuk National University for evaluation of severe pelvic limbs paralysis without deep pain, normal defecation and urination. Based on physical examination, neurological assessment and computed tomogram (CT), the diagnosis was made as subluxation and compressed fracture. All the cases were surgically treated with dorsal laminectomy and a spondylosyndesis using pin and bone cements. For 2 weeks, the dogs didn't show any improvement. Consequently, the dogs were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) and Duhuojisheng-tang (DHJST). All the dogs got back the deep pain and presented wagged tail on 14-35 days after starting EA with DHJST. Especially, two of 3 dogs recovered almost normal ambulation and capacities of urination and defecation. But, one dog failed to regain normal ambulation due to inflammation of operative site which is thought to be caused by the bone cement. From these cases, it was thought that the combination of EA and DHJST mightbe one of the suitable therapies in dogs with no neurological improvement.
