This paper presents an improved parallel particle swarm optimization approach (IPPSO) based decomposed network for economic power dispatch with discontinuous fuel cost functions. The range of partial power demand corresponding to the partial output powers near the global optimal solution is determined by a flexible decomposed network strategy and then the final optimal solution is obtained by parallel Particle Swarm Optimization. The proposed approach tested on 6 generating units with smooth cost function, and to 26-bus (6 generating units) with consideration of prohibited zone effect, the simulation results compared with recent global optimization methods (Bee-OPF, GA, MTS, SA, PSO). From the different case studies, it is observed that the proposed approach provides qualitative solution with less computational time compared to various methods available in the literature survey.
This paper investigates the potential of a hybrid model which combines the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) and an improved particle swarm optimization (IMPSO) techniques for prediction of concrete compressive strength. A modified PSO algorithm is employed in determining the optimal values of LSSVM parameters to improve the forecasting accuracy. Experimental data on concrete compressive strength in the literature were used to validate and evaluate the performance of the proposed IMPSO-LSSVM model. Further, predictions from five models (the IMPSO-LSSVM, PSO-LSSVM, genetic algorithm (GA) based LSSVM, back propagation (BP) neural network, and a statistical model) were compared with the experimental data. The results show that the proposed IMPSO-LSSVM model is a feasible and efficient tool for predicting the concrete compressive strength with high accuracy.
The printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) with airfoil fins has the benefits of high compactness, high efficiency and superior heat transfer performance. A novel multi-objective optimization approach is presented to design the airfoil fin PCHE in this paper. Three optimization design variables (the vertical number, the horizontal number and the staggered number) are obtained by means of dimensionless airfoil fin arrangement parameters. And the optimization objective is to maximize the Nusselt number (Nu) and minimize the Fanning friction factor (f). Firstly, in order to investigate the impact of design variables on the thermal-hydraulic performance, a parametric study via the design of experiments is proposed. Subsequently, the relationships between three optimization design variables and two objective functions (Nu and f) are characterized by an improved particle swarm optimization-backpropagation artificial neural network. Finally, a multi-objective optimization is used to construct the Pareto optimal front, in which the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II is used. The comprehensive performance is found to be the best when the airfoil fins are completely staggered arrangement. And the best compromise solution based on the TOPSIS method is identified as the optimal solution, which can achieve the requirement of high heat transfer performance and low flow resistance.
The compound active clamp zero voltage soft switching (CACZVS) three-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter has many advantages, such as high efficiency, high power factor, bi-directional energy flow, and soft switching of all the switches. Triple closed-loop PI controllers are used for the three-phase power factor correction converter. The control objectives of the converter include a fast transient response, high accuracy, and unity power factor. There are six parameters of the controllers that need to be tuned in order to obtain multi-objective optimization. However, six of the parameters are mutually dependent for the objectives. This is beyond the scope of the traditional experience based PI parameters tuning method. In this paper, an improved chaotic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) method has been proposed to optimize the controller parameters. In the proposed method, multi-dimensional chaotic sequences generated by spatiotemporal chaos map are used as initial particles to get a better initial distribution and to avoid local minimums. Pareto optimal solutions are also used to avoid the weight selection difficulty of the multi-objectives. Simulation and experiment results show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.
This paper proposes a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, which is improved by making use of the Harmony Search (HS) approach and called HS-PSO algorithm. A computer code is developed for optimal sizing design of non-linear steel frames with various semi-rigid and rigid beam-to-column connections based on the HS-PSO algorithm. The developed code selects suitable sections for beams and columns, from a standard set of steel sections such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) wide-flange W-shapes, such that the minimum total cost, which comprises total member plus connection costs, is obtained. Stress and displacement constraints of AISC-LRFD code together with the size constraints are imposed on the frame in the optimal design procedure. The nonlinear moment-rotation behavior of connections is modeled using the Frye-Morris polynomial model. Moreover, the P-${\Delta}$ effects of beam-column members are taken into account in the non-linear structural analysis. Three benchmark design examples with several types of connections are presented and the results are compared with those of standard PSO and of other researches as well. The comparison shows that the proposed HS-PSO algorithm performs better both than the PSO and the Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) methods.

With the increasing popularization of cloud computing, how to reduce physical energy consumption and increase resource utilization while maintaining system performance has become a research hotspot of virtual machine deployment in cloud platform. Although some related researches have been reported to solve this problem, most of them used the traditional heuristic algorithm based on greedy algorithm and only considered effect of single-dimensional resource (CPU or Memory) on energy consumption. With considerations to multi-dimensional resource utilization, this paper analyzed impact of multi-dimensional resources on energy consumption of cloud computation. A multi-dimensional resource constraint that could maintain normal system operation was proposed. Later, a novel virtual machine deployment method (NVMDM) based on improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) and Euclidean distance was put forward. It deals with problems like how to generate the initial particle swarm through the improved first-fit algorithm based on resource constraint (IFFABRC), how to define measure standard of credibility of individual and global optimal solutions of particles by combining with Bayesian transform, and how to define fitness function of particle swarm according to the multi-dimensional resource constraint relationship. The proposed NVMDM was proved superior to existing heuristic algorithm in developing performances of physical machines. It could improve utilization of CPU, memory, disk and bandwidth effectively and control task execution time of users within the range of resource constraint.
This paper proposes the hybrid Complex-PSO algorithm based on the complex search method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) for unconstrained optimization. This hybridization intends to produce faster and more accurate convergence to the optimum value. These hybrid will concentrate on determining the dynamic load model parameters, the ZIP model and induction motor model parameters. Measurement-based parameter estimation, which employs measurement data to derive load model parameters, is used. The theoretical foundation of the measurement-based approach is system identification. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the standard particle swarm optimization and complex method can be improved through hybridization of the two methods and the results will be compared with that of their original forms.

This paper proposes an improved particle swarm optimization named PSO with Controllable Random Exploration Velocity (PSO-CREV) behaving an additional exploration behavior. Different from other improvements on PSO, the updating principle of PSO-CREV is constructed in terms of stochastic approximation diagram. Hence a stochastic velocity independent on cognitive and social components of PSO can be added to the updating principle, so that particles have strong exploration ability than those of conventional PSO. The conditions and main behaviors of PSO-CREV are described. Two properties in terms of "divergence before convergence" and "controllable exploration behavior" are presented, which promote the performance of PSO-CREV. An experimental method based on a complex test function is proposed by which the proper parameters of PSO-CREV used in practice are figured out, which guarantees the high exploration ability, as well as the convergence rate is concerned. The benchmarks and applications on FCRNN training verify the improvements brought by PSO-CREV.
The estimation of the remaining useful life (RUL) of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is important for intelligent battery management system (BMS). Data mining technology is becoming increasingly mature, and the RUL estimation of Li-ion batteries based on data-driven prognostics is more accurate with the arrival of the era of big data. However, the support vector machine (SVM), which is applied to predict the RUL of Li-ion batteries, uses the traditional single-radial basis kernel function. This type of classifier has weak generalization ability, and it easily shows the problem of data migration, which results in inaccurate prediction of the RUL of Li-ion batteries. In this study, a novel multi-kernel SVM (MSVM) based on polynomial kernel and radial basis kernel function is proposed. Moreover, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to search the kernel parameters, penalty factor, and weight coefficient of the MSVM model. Finally, this paper utilizes the NASA battery dataset to form the observed data sequence for regression prediction. Results show that the improved algorithm not only has better prediction accuracy and stronger generalization ability but also decreases training time and computational complexity.

Centrifugal pump is a key part of nuclear power plant systems, and its health status is critical to the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. Therefore, fault diagnosis is required for centrifugal pump. Traditional fault diagnosis methods have difficulty extracting fault features from nonlinear and non-stationary signals, resulting in low diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, a new fault diagnosis method is proposed based on the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm-based variational modal decomposition (VMD) and relevance vector machine (RVM). Firstly, a simulation test bench for rotor faults is built, in which vibration displacement signals of the rotor are also collected by eddy current sensors. Then, the improved particle swarm algorithm is used to optimize the VMD to achieve adaptive decomposition of vibration displacement signals. Meanwhile, a screening criterion based on the minimum Kullback-Leibler (K-L) divergence value is established to extract the primary intrinsic modal function (IMF) component. Eventually, the factors are obtained from the primary IMF component to form a fault feature vector, and fault patterns are recognized using the RVM model. The results show that the extraction of the fault information and fault diagnosis classification have been improved, and the average accuracy could reach 97.87%.
