A lot of research has been made over the recent decade to develop testing packages with antimicrobial properties to improve food safety. In this study, a new method, experimental device and technology for environmental corresponding packages of polypropylene (PP) film has been developed to provide effective temperature buffering during the transport/long-term storage of grains or foodstuffs from the supplier to the market. This quantitatively optimized mixing system enabled to produce PP films with the 700$\sim$1,400d (width;1.5$\sim$3mm, thickness;0.01$\sim$0.5mm). In the whole mixing systems, the finely-granulated inorganic illite and PP virgin chip for master batch (M/B) chip was calculated by digital measurement methods, and then the M/B chip for PP film was adapted through a air jet and PP grinding method. The prepared PP film was characterized with tensile strength and elongation, far infrared radiation (FIR) emissivity, antimicrobial activity and deodorization properties. The results revealed that the two differently grain-sized illite could be show homogeneously dispersed on PP chip surface, and as the increasing of illite content, the FIR emissivity and the anion emission rate of film was increasingly improved. In both of 325 and 1,500 mesh-sized illite contained PP chip, of course the antimicrobial activity was good. But the ultimate deodorization rate for ammonia gas of PP film were found to be approximately the same.

The light quality obtained from sunlight by removing the spectral region below about 500 nm(blue light region) showed a remarkable effect on the growth of pepper. The physiological characteristics evaluated with the conventionally adopted indices at the vegetative stage revealed that the filtered sunlight improved and accelerated growth in general. In addition, the photosynthetic pigment level comprising chlorophylls, ${\beta}-carotene$ and 5 xanthophyll components as major pigments was increased significantly in the leaves grown under the orange-colored light. The increase of pigment content was prominent for every carotenoid component rather than for chlorophylls. The strong growth activity produced by the elected spectral quality for this work was properly demonstrated by the fruit yield ratio (filtered light/white light) which was found to be 1.35. Also confirmed was that removing the blue light region from solar radiation did not result in worsening of the food quality of matured pepper. The logic behind selection of the above light quality and some data presented was discussed on various photobiological aspects.

A biofertilizer, BIOACTIVE, was manufactured by N-acetyl-thioproline (ATCA) and mineral phosphate solubilizing bacteria. The growth promoting effect of the biofertilizer on lettuce was evaluated under three different pot conditions, and its stability was assessed in the field. According to the results of the pot experiments, plant growth was improved compared with that of control: 128%, 122%, and 153% for the leaf number, leaf length, and leaf mass, respectively. Applying the manufactured biofertilizer increased the concentration of phosphate: 118% and 132% in the cultivation soil and plant cells, respectively. These show that BIOACTIVE may have potential as an effective biofertilizer in agriculture.

An analysis method of tetracyclines far fish and shellfish products containing large amount of low molecular materials and pigments was established. The recovery of the established analysis method for four tetracycline samples was $72-100\%$ and higher than other methods reported. Especially, proposed sample treatment protocol was shown to be effective for the removal of low molecular materials and pigments that tend to interfere with accurate analysis. The detection limit of oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) from the sample was 0.02 ppm, and the detection limit of chlortetracycline (CTC) and doxycycline (DC) from the sample was 0.1ppm, To examine the efficiency of the established method and identify tetracycline usage in fish farms, tetracycline group antibiotics in the flounder being cultured was monitored. The improved method can be used for fish and shellfish products effectively and all surveyed fish farms have used tetracycline all the year round. The proposed method was adopted as official method for fishery products by Korean Food and Drug Administration in 2003 and it is being used by regulatory authority as National Fishery Products Quality Inspection Service.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of dietary and serum phospholipid fatty acids composition and serum lipid levels in postmenopausal women. Data about anthropometry, dietary intake, physical activities, serum lipid profile and serum phospholipid fatty acid composition were collected from eighty-five postmenopausal women. The subjects were classified as normocholesterolemia (NC), moderate hypercholesterolemia(MC) and phyperchollesterolemia(HC) according to their serum total cholesterol (TC) levels based on The Guideline for Korean Hyperlipidemia set/published by The Committee for Hyperlipidemia in Korea. The results were as follows. Total energy intake and the ratio of energy intake to energy expenditure were positively related, while dietary fiber intake was negatively related, with serum TC level. Dietary fat intake was positively related with serum LDL-C level. Dietary cholesterol, saturated fatty acid (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake and the ratio of ingested saturated fat and cholesterol to calories (RISCC) were positively related, while the P/S ratio of dietary fat was negatively related, with serum TC and LDL-C levels. Serum phospholipid fatty acids composition was not significantly different among the three groups. SFA of serum phospholipid fatty acids was positively related, while P/S and M/S ratios of serum phospholipid fatiy acids were negatively correlated, with serum TC and LDL-C levels. We recommend that the dietary P/S ratio of postmenopausal women is increased by reducing their dietary SFA intake. With these changes in the diet, serum phospholipid fatty acid composition could be also changed, and serum lipids levels could be improved.
In mass production of larval rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, high mortality had been observed frequently. This may be the consequence of the low nutritional quality of the live feeds used. This experiment was designed to find out a suitable diet for the mass production of rockfish larvae. Three kinds of live feeds were tested ; plutei of sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus), L-type rotifers (Brachionus plicatiilis) and Artemia naupii. The latter two were enriched with ${\omega}$-yeast, Spirulina platensis and Super Selco before feeding to rockfish larvae. The sea urchin plutei caused to poor survival and growth rates for larval rockfish, and therefore, they were not seemed as proper feed for rockfish larvae. Enrichments of rotifers and Artemia nauplii with ${\omega}$-yeast, Spirulina platensis, or Super Selco improved survival and growth rate. But, rotifers enriched with Super Selco resulted in better rockfish larvae survival than those enriched with ${\omega}$-yeast. A sudden increase of mortality occurred around 11 days after birth. In this critical period, a shift feed such as Artemia nauplii had been supplemented with rotifers. After this critical transition period, the moratality gradually decreased by feeding Artemia nauplii enriched with PUFA. Feeding of mixed feed with rotifers and Artemia nauplii resulted in better larval survival and growth than those of each live food alone.

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the anti-diabetic effects of Spargaium stoloniferum Buchanan-Hamilton (Sparganii Rhizoma, SR) extract on diabetic rats. Methods: Diabetes was induced with Sprague-Dawley rats by high fat/high sucrose (HF/HS) diet for 4 weeks and injection of a single low dose of streptozotocin (STZ; 35 mg/kg). SR water extract at 500 mg/kg was orally administrated once a day for 4 weeks. Body weights, food and water intakes and urine volumes were measured. The levels of glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) were measured in the sera of rats. Histological changes were observed in pancreas, liver, and kidney tissues by H&E staining. Results: The administration of Sparganii Rhizoma extract at 500 mg/kg in diabetic rats did not shown a significant difference in body weight changes and GPT levels, but showed meaningful changes in an increase of urination volume, and decrease of serum glucose and insulin levels. Total cholesterol and GPT levels were also significantly decreased after SR extract administration in diabetic rats. Furthermore, the abnormal changes of pancreas, liver and kidney were also improved by Sparganii Rhizoma extract administration. Conclusions: These results indicate that SR extract can improve HF/HS-diet and STZ-induced diabetic damages in rats through inhibition of the blood glucose and insulin increase.

Protein-calories malnutrition is common among patients in the hospital. In particular, elderly patients with neurologic disorders has more risk of nutritional deficiency due to swallowing difficulty. Enteral tube feeding is more economical, physiological and immunological than parenteral nutrition for patients who have adequate gastrointestinal function. This study was conducted patients with neurologic disorders who received enteral nutrition at Asan Medical Center from February 1 to October 10, 2002. The control group (48 patients) were given traditional feeding methods 4 times a day while the treatment group (45 patients) were given improved feeding methods 3 times a day. We assessed nutritional status of patients and compared to both groups. We investigated body weight, serum albumin, hemoglobin, total lymphocyte count by means of nutrition markers. The objectives of this study is to reduce the time needed for nutritional requirement of patients without an increase in gastrointestinal intolerances. The results of this study are as follows: 1. Nutritional status of many patients in both groups were either malnourished or at risk for malnutrition. 2. The time to arrive to the nutritional requirements were 6.21 $\pm$ 0.35 days for the control group and 4.24 $\pm$ 0.52 days for the treatment group. The treatment group showed a significantly shorter amount of time. 3. The changes of the nutritional marker in the control group showed a significant drop in body weight, serum albumin and serum hemoglobin while the treatment group experienced a significant increase in body weight, serum albumin and total lymphocyte count. 4. Feeding intolerane such as diarrhea, high residual volume, ileus, nausea and vomiting were investigated. Diarrhea found in 25.1% (12 patients) of the control group and 22.2% (10 patients) of the treatment group and these findings are not significant.
The coffee has been used as drink in the world and it has been using not only food but also dyeing. It can be used for four seasons in our normal living and it can be taken friendly everywhere. The coffee consists of about 8${\sim}$10% phenol(chlorogenic acid) that related to antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. However, its exact components and the dyeing property effects has not been well known yet. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the dyeing property and ultraviolet-cut ability of silk and nylon fabrics that was dyed variously with coffee extracts. Coffee extracts were done by boiling coffee with distilled water at $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. As mordanting agent, we used $AlK(SO_4)_2$$12H_2O$, $CuSO_4$$5H_2O$, $FeCl_2$$4H_2O$. As the result of the dyeing properties and ultraviolet-cut ability of fabrics dyed with coffee bean extracts, we can find that the optimum dyeing temperature and dyeing time of the silk and nylon fabrics dyed with coffee bean extracts was $90^{\circ}C$, 60 min. and the colorfastness of washing and dry-cleaning was improved by using mordanting agent(4${\sim}$5 grade). Ultraviolet-cut ability was showed more 90% in dyed nylon fabrics.
