  • Adaptive controllers for linear system whose nominal values of coefficients only are known, that is corrupted by disturbance, are designed by signal synthesis model reference adaptive control (MRAC). This design is stemmed from the Lyapunov direct method. To reduce the model following error and to improve the conrergence rate of the design, an indirect suboptimal control law is de rived using the Hamilton Jacobi Beellman equation. Proper compensaton for the effects of time varying coefficients and plant disturbance are suggested. In the design procedure no complete identification of unknown coefficients are required.

Design Improvement of Front-End Loader for Tractor to Reduce Stress Concentration and Evaluation of Impact Safety (응력집중 저감을 위한 트랙터용 프론트 로더의 설계개선 및 충격 안전성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural safety of the front-end loader for the 90 kW class of agricultural tractors in impact test conditions. Deformation and stress on the loader under the impact test conditions are analyzed using the commercial finite element analysis software ANSYS. In previous research dealing with the initial design of the loader, the maximum stress occurred in the mount and exceeded the yield strength of the material. In this paper, an improved design of the mount of the loader was proposed to reduce the stress concentration in the initial design. The safety of the improved design was verified by performing rigid-body dynamics analysis, transient structural analysis, and static structural analysis under three impact test conditions: a drop and catch test, a corner pull test, a corner push test. It was found that the local stress concentration in the mount that appeared in the initial design was greatly reduced in the improved design, and that the maximum stresses occurred in the three impact test conditions are smaller than the yield strength. It is expected that the design improvement of the mount proposed in this study and the method of analysis may be effectively used to enhance structural safety in the development of new model front loaders in the future.

  • In this paper, the improved Multi-FNN (Fuzzy-Neural Networks) model is identified and optimized using HCM (Hard C-Means) clustering method and optimization algorithms. The proposed Multi-FNN is based on FNN and use simplified and linear inference as fuzzy inference method and error back propagation algorithm as learning rules.   • In this paper, a method to apply the simulated annealing method to three dimensional layout design problem which has multiple constraint conditions and evaluation criteria, was suggested. A program to support three dimensional layout design was developed according to the suggested method. This program was applied to the layout design of the wireless unmaned ocean space submergible boat. The layout result was improved 19.0% for the result of layout design expert. By this, it was verified that the suggested method has validity in supporting three dimensional layout design problem.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a vehicle system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. Most optimization algorithms require the derivatives of cost and constraint function with respect to design in order to calculate the next improved design. This paper presents an efficient algorithm application for the design sensitivity analysis, using the direct differentiation method. A mounting area of suspension that welded on chassis frame is analyzed to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method.   • The size and layout of user interface components need to be optimally designed in terms of reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility in order for efficient and effective use of products. The present study develops an ergonomic design method which optimizes the size and layout of user interface components using adaptive genetic algorithm. The developed design method determines a near-optimal design which maximizes the aggregated score of 4 ergonomic design criteria (reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility). The adaptive genetic algorithm used in the present study finds a near-optimum by automatically adjusting the key parameter (probability of mutation) of traditional genetic algorithm according to the characteristic of current solutions. Since the adaptive mechanism partially helps to overcome the local optimality problem, the probability of finding the near-optimum has been substantially improved. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed design method, the present study applied it to the user interface design for a portable wireless communication radio.

  • Among the themes related to earthquake countermeasures at construction sites, those for tower cranes are particularly important. An accident involving the collapse of a crane during the construction of a skyscraper has serious consequences, such as human injury or death, enormous repair costs, and significant delays in construction. One of the causes of deadly tower crane collapses is the destruction of the site joints of the tower crane mast. This paper proposes a new design method by static elastoplastic finite element analysis using a supercomputer for the design of the end plate-type tensile bolted joints, which are generally applied to the site joints of a tower crane mast. This new design method not only enables highly accurate and reliable joint design but also allows for a design that considers construction conditions, such as the introduction of a pre-tension axial force on the bolts. By applying this new design method, the earthquake resistance of tower cranes will undoubtedly be improved.

  • A numerical study was conducted to improve the performance of an impeller of centrifugal compressor. Nine design variables were chosen with constraints. Only meridional contours and blade profile were adjusted. ANN (Artificial Neural Net) was adopted as a main optimization algorithm with PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) in order to reduce the optimization time. At first, ANN was learned and trained with the design variable sets which were obtained using DOE (Design of Experiment). This ANN was continuously improved its accuracy for each generation of which population was one hundred. New design variable set in each generation was selected using a non-gradient based method of PSO in order to obtain the global optimized result. After $7^{th}$ generation, the prediction difference of efficiency and pressure ratio between ANN and CFD was less than 0.6%. From more than 1,200 design variable sets, a pareto of efficiency versus pressure ratio was obtained and an optimized result was selected based on the multi-objective function. On this optimized impeller, the efficiency and pressure ratio were improved by 1% and 9.3%, respectively.

  • In order to improve aerodynamic performance of multi-stage axial flow turbines used in aircraft engines, a one-dimensional aerodynamic design and optimization framework is constructed. In the method, flow path is generated by solving mass continuation and energy conservation with loss computed by the Craig & Cox model; Also real gas properties has been taken into consideration. To obtain an optimal result, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to optimize the efficiencies and determine values of various design variables; Final design can be selected from obtained Pareto optimal solution sets. A three-stage axial turbine is used to verify the effectiveness of the developed optimization framework, and designs are checked by three-dimensional CFD simulation. Results show that the aerodynamic performance of the optimized turbine has been significantly improved at design point, with the total-to-total efficiency increased by 1.17% and the total-to-static efficiency increased by 1.48%. As for the off-design performance, the optimized one is improved at all working points except those at small mass flow.

Design of ferromagnetic shims for an HTS NMR magnet using sequential search method

  • This study deals with the ferromagnetic shims design based on the spherical harmonic coefficient reduction method. The design method using the sequential search method is an intuitive method and has the advantage of quickly reaching the optimal result. The study was conducted for a 400 MHz all-REBCO magnet, which had difficulty in shimming due to the problem of SCF (screening current induced field). The initial field homogeneity of the magnet was measured to be 233.76 ppm at 20 mm DSV (Diameter Spherical Volume). In order to improve the field homogeneity of the magnet, the ferromagnetic shim with a thickness of 1 mil to 11 mil was constructed by a design method in which sequential search algorithm was applied. As a result, the field homogeneity of the magnet could be significantly improved to 0.24 ppm at 20 mm DSV and 0.05 ppm at 10 mm DSV.
