The results of this study confirm that the availability of hemin influences the expression of selected membrane proteins of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Prevotella nigrescens. A 30 kDa (heated 24 kDa) hemin-binding protein whose expression is hemin regulated was identified and purified in P. gingivalis. A strong hemin-binding function was found by LDS-PAGE and TMBZ staining when P. gingivalis cells were grown under hemin-limited conditions. A 50 kDa cell envelope associated protein, whose expression is hemin regulated, is considered to be a putative hemin binding protein from P. intermedia and P. nigrescens, respectively. N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis of CNBr-digested 24 kDa hemin binding protein from P. gingivalis revealed that this protein belongs to a new, so far undescribed hemin-binding class of proteins. N-terminal amino acid sequence of a 50 kDa putative hemin binding protein from P. intermedia was identical with Enolase from Streptococcus intermedia. Work is in progress to further characterize the molecular structure of these proteins.
The possible use of bioglass as implant materials is due to its biocompatibility to human body. Even if many animal studies for the bioglasses have been performed, their structures and physical properties are not fully understood. In the present work, several investigations such as Raman spectroscopic analysis, density, thermal expansion coefficient, softening temperature, and refractive index measurement were carried out to find the structures and physical properties of bioglasses, where MgO is substituted for CaO in bioglass composition (46.1%SiO2, 24.4%Na2O, 26.9%CaO, 2.6%P2O5 ; mole%). Hydroxyapatite formation on the glass surface reacted in Tris-buffer solution was also examined. When CaO was replaced by MgO, nonbridging oxygen in glass structuer was diminished but the degree of disorder increased. Thermal expansion and softening properties showed the mixed oxide effect. Hydroxyapatite were formed on the surface of 0~11mole% of MgO containing bioglasses, and the thickness of SiO2-rich layer as well as hydroxyapatite layer were unchanged with MgO content. However, the hydroxyapatite was not formed on the surface of the bioglasses containing over 11 mole percent MgO, even if the glasses were reacted for long period.
Purpose: This study was performed to survey the incidence and imaging characteristics of the antral exostoses in a Korean population. Materials and methods: The cone-beam computed tomographic images of 5,268 patients were reviewed for the presence of antral exostoses. Incidence, location, shape, structure and dimension were evaluated. Gender and side difference were analyzed by chi-squared test. Results: Ninety eight antral exostoses were found in 78 (1.5%) out of 5,268 patients. Gender and sides showed no statistically significant differences. Antral exostoses was often found in the lateral wall and floor of the maxillary sinus, accounting for 58.2% and 38.8% of the exostoses, respectively. Most exostoses had broad base and were composed of spongy bone surrounded by compact bone. The mean dimension was 9.1(W)*4.9(D)*5.3(H) mm. Conclusion: Antral exostoses is not uncommon in a Korean population. The identification of antral exostoses is clinically significant to avoid unnecessary examination and treatment. It also needs to be examined carefully in the implant planning or sinus lift procedure.
Ferroelectric YMnO$_3$ thin films are excellent dielectric materials for high integrated ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) with metal-ferroelectric-silicon field effect transistor (MFSFET) structure. In this study, YMnO$_3$ thin films were etched with C1$_2$/Ar gas chemistries in inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The maximum etch rate of YMnO$_3$ thin films is 285 $\AA$/min under C1$_2$/Ar of 10/0, 600 W/-200 V and 15 mTorr. The selectivities of YMnO$_3$ over CeO$_2$ and $Y_2$O$_3$ are 2.85, 1.72, respectively. The results of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reflect that Y is removed dominantly by chemical reaction between Y and Cl, while Mn is removed more effective by Ar ion bombardment than chemical reaction. The results of secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) were equal to these of XPS. The etch profile of the etched YMnO$_3$ film is approximately 65$^{\circ}$and free of residues at the sidewall.
The surface was transformed to porous titanium oxide by the anodization of pure titanium. Titanium was anodized in non-aqueous and aqueous electrolytes at different potentials between 5 V and 150 V. Various electrolytes were compose of ethylene glycerol, $H_2SO_4,\;NH_4F\;and\;H_2O$. We obtained titania nanotube arrays on the micro pore of titanium. Micro pores and nano tubes were obtained by anodization at high potentials and low potentials, respectively. Morphologies of nanotubes and micro pore were characterized by FE-SEM. The unique surface structure is very attractive to electrical and medical applications such as gas sensor, biosensor, dental implant and stent.
Porous metals are called as a new material of 21th century because they show not only extremely low density, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Since the late in the 1990's, considerable progress has been made in the production technologies of many kinds of porous metals such as aluminum, titanium, nickel, copper, stainless steel, etc. The commercial applications of porous metals have been increased in the field of light weight structures, sound absorption, mechanical damping, bio-materials, thermal management for heat exchanger and heat sink. Especially, the porous metals are promising in automotive applications for light-weighting body sheets and various structural components due to the good relation between weight and stiffness. This paper reviews the recent progress of production techniques using molten metal bubbling, metal foaming, gas expansion, hollow sphere structure, unidirectional solidification, etc, which have been commercialized or under developing, and finally introduces several case studies on the potential applications of porous metals in the area of heat sink, automotive pannel, cathod for Ni-MH battery, golf putter and medical implant.
The formation of anodic oxide film of titanium (Ti) was studied at a variety of electrolyte concentrations and current density to clarify their effects on morphology, microstructure and composition of Ti oxide layer. For the analysis of the Ti oxide films, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used. The results showed that the concentration of phosphoric acid played a crucial role in the crystalline structure of the Ti oxide layer while the current density gave a critical effect on the thickness and diameter of its pore. In particular, the crystalline anatase phase with a thickness larger than $2{\mu}m$, which is quite desirable for a dental implant application, could be readily prepared at the phosphoric acid concentration of 0.5 M and current density higher than $2.0A/dm^2$.
Microdrive with high precision and light mass enough to install on mouse head was fabricated for recording the reliable signal of neuron cell to understand the brain study. The proposed microdrive has three H-form PZT actuators and its guide structure. The microdrive operation principle is based on the well known inchworm principle. The synchronization of three PZT actuators is able to produce the linear motion along the guide structure. Our proposed microdrive has a precise accuracy of about 100nm and a long stroke of about 5mm. The electrode which is used for the recording of the action potential of the neuron cell was fixed at one of PZT actuators. The proposed microdrive was suited to acquisition of signals from in vivo extra-cellular single-unit recoding. On the condition of the anesthetized mouse, the single-unit signals could be recorded by using the proposed microdrive. In addition, applying the PZT microdrive to an alert mouse, we try to implant it on a mouse brain skull to explore single neuron firing.
Surface modifications are commonly utilized to adjust the properties of the titanium and its alloy surface to the specific needs of the medical applications, but there are disadvantages such as poor osteoconductive properties and low adhesion of bone cell to implant surface. In order to improve these disadvantages, changes in surface properties have an important effect on osseointegration during implantation. In this paper we applied new technological method for improving a unique surface modification using the characteristic of an electrolytic Solution. Thus, in the electrolyte containing NaF in Na2SO4, TiO2 nanoporous was uniformly formed, and HAp nanoparticles were electrodeposited around the TiO2 nanopores, but in the electrolyte containing NH4F in (NH4)H2PO4, the coarse protrusions including HAp nano particles were regularly deposited onto the TiO2 barrier layer. The surface characteristics and the distributed elements and have been investigated by EDS analysis, and ultra-fine structure of surface are carried out using FE-SEM. To investigate the behavior of the anion, the analysis of chemical states was performed by XPS, and the narrow spectrums for Ti2P, Ca 2p, and P 2p seems to be almost similar depending on the characteristics of the electrolyte solution respectively. In addition, Ca 2p spectrum could be resolved into two peaks for Ca 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 at 347.4 and 351.3 eV, which are related to hydroxyapatite. And, the P peak can also be deconvoluted into two peaks for P1/2 and P3/2 levels with binding energy 134.2 and 133.4 eV, respectively. From the result of soaking test, the apatite morphologys were well-formed onto the modified surface according to the different conditions.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate histologically the resorption and tissue response of various resorbable collagen membranes used for guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration, using a subcutaneous model on the dorsal surface of the rat. In this study, 10 Sprague-Dawley male rats (mean BW 150gm) were used and the commercially available materials included acellular dermal matrix allograft, porcine collagen membrane, freeze-dried bovine dura mater. Animals were sacrificed at 2,6 and 8 weeks after implantation of various resorbable collagen membranes. Specimens were prepared with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Resorption : Inner portion of porcine collagen membrane was resorbed a lot at 6 weeks, but its function was being kept for infiltration of another tissues were not observed. Freeze-dried bovine dura mater and acellular dermal allograft were rarely resorbed and kept their structure of outer portion for 8 weeks. 2. Inflammatory reactions : Inflammatory reaction was so mild and foreign body reaction didn't happen in all of resorbable collagen membranes, which showed their biocompatibility. 3. In all of resorbable collagen membranes, multinuclcated giant cells by foreign body reactions were not observed. Barrier membranes have to maintain their function for 4-6 weeks in guided tissue regeneration and at least 8 weeks in guided bone regeneration. According to present study, we can find all of the resorbable collagen membranes kept their function and structure for 8 weeks and were rarely resorbed. Foreign body reaction didn't happen and inflammatory reaction was so mild histologically. Therefore, all of collagen membranes used in this experiment were considered proper resorbable membranes for guided tissue regeneration and guided bone regeneration.
