  • In Korea, many water intake plants are easily affected by effluents of sewage treatment plants because sewage treatment plants are usually located upstream or nearby the plants of the same riverine area. Furthermore, the inflow of harmful contaminants owing to pollutant spills or transportation accidents of vehicles using the roads and bridges intersecting the river causes significant impact on the management of water intake plants. Paldang lake, the main water intake plants in Korea, is especially exposed to various water pollution accidents, because the drainage basin area is significantly large compared to the water surface area of the lake. Therefore it is necessary to predict the possible pollutant spill in advance and consider measurements in case of water pollution. In this study, water quality prediction was performed in Paldang Lake in Korea durig the dry season using two-dimensional numerical models. In order to represent the cases of pollutant accidents, the difference of pollutant transport patterns with varying injection points was analyzed. Numerical simulations for hydrodynamics of water flow and water quality predictions were performed using RMA-2 and RAM4 respectively. As a result of simulation, the difference of pollutant transport with the injection points was analyzed. As a countermeasure against the pollutant accident, the augmentation of the flow rate is proposed. In comparison with the present state, the rapid dilution and flushing effects on the pollutant cloud could be expected with increase of flow rate. Thus, increase of flow rate can be used for operation of water intake plants in case of pollutant spill accidents.

  • A distribution survey was conducted from 2018 to 2020 to evaluate the distribution status, habitat characteristics, and extinction threat of the short ninespine stickleback Pungitius kaibarae (Gasterosteidae). Literature reports of P. kaibarae distribution have been sorted by each period, 1980~1996, 1997~2005, and 2007~2017, and the samples were collected in 32, 43, and 64 stations for each period. Among the 75 streams and 193 sampling sites investigated during the study period, 1,400 P. kaibarae individuals were collected from 26 streams at 39 sites. The main habitat of P. kaibarae was downstream or brackish water zones with a low altitude, slow water velocity, and many aquatic plants. The main reasons for the decline in population size were assumed to be drought and flood, river work for flood restoration and river maintenance, bridges construction, and predation by the exotic fish species Micropterus salmoides. Previous evidence reported a 42.6% reduction in occupancy within 10 years, a decline in habitat quality, and the spread and impact of the exotic fish species Micropterus salmoides. Therefore, P. kaibarae is now considered a Vulnerable (VU A2ace) species based on the IUCN Red List categories and criteria. Therefore, P. kaibarae should be redesignated as an endangered species by the Ministry of Environment and systematically managed.

  • Recently, in digital agriculture, the types and utilization of greenhouses based on IoT are spreading, and greenhouses are being modernized, enlarged, and even factoryized using smart technology. However, a specific standardization plan has not been proposed according to the equipment for data collection in the smart greenhouse and the size or shape of the greenhouse. In other words, there is a lack of standard data for facility equipment, such as the type and number of sensors and equipment according to the size of the greenhouse, the type of greenhouse construction film and materials suitable for crops and carbon neutrality. Therefore, in this study, the suitability of the implementation, installation and quantity of IoT equipment for data collection was tested, and some standard technologies were presented through the implementation of data collection and communication methods. In addition, impact strength, tensile, tear, elongation, light transmittance, and lifespan issues for PE, PVC, and EVA, which account for about 90% of existing greenhouses, were presented, and the shape, size, and environmental problems of greenhouses made of films were presented. presented in the text. In this research paper, a standardized carbon-neutral modular smart greenhouse using nano-material film was implemented as a solution to environmental problems such as greenhouse size, farm crop type, greenhouse lifespan, and film, and its performance with existing greenhouses was analyzed and presented. Through this, we propose a modularized greenhouse that can be expanded or reduced freely without distinction in the size of the greenhouse or the shape of farmhouse crops, and the lifespan is extended and standardized. Finally, the average characteristics of greenhouses using existing PE, PVC, and EVA films and the characteristics of greenhouses using new carbon-neutral nanomaterials are compared and reviewed, and a plan to implement an expandable IoT greenhouse that supports carbon neutrality is proposed.

  • Climate change, abnormal weather, and unprecedented extreme weather events have appeared globally. Interest in their size, frequency, and changes in spatial distribution has been heightened. However, the events do not display regional or regular patterns or cycles. Therefore, it is difficult to carry out quantified evaluation of their frequency and tendency. For more objective evaluation of extreme weather events, this study proposed a rainfall extreme weather index (STARDEX, 2005). To compare the present and future spatio-temporal distribution of extreme weather events, each index was calculated from the past data collected from 66 observation points nationwide operated by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Tendencies up to now have been analyzed. Then, using SRES B2 scenario and 2045s (2031-2050) data from YONU CGCM simulation were used to compute differences among each of future extreme weather event indices and their tendencies were spatially expressed. The results shows increased rainfall tendency in the East-West inland direction during the summer. In autumn, rainfall tendency increased in some parts of Gangwon-do and the south coast. In the meanwhile, the analysis of the duration of prolonged dry period, which can be contrasted with the occurrence of rainfall or its concentration, showed that the dryness tendency was more pronounced in autumn rather than summer. Geographically, the tendency was more remarkable in Jeju-do and areas near coastal areas.

  • The problems such as natural resource exhaustion, pollutant emission and waste generation are increasing worldwide with the industrial development. The quantity of the industrial by-product in Korea is 6 million tons a year, and even its basic treatment processes including landfill, incineration and storage have reached their limits. In this study, fly ash and silica fume were applied to shotcrete to develop a method for the reuse of resources and to increase the use of fly ash, which is an industrial waste. An environmental hazard evaluation is a must to actively address the worldwide environmental problems, though. Therefore, an environmental impact assessment was conducted using the chemical content analysis test and heavy metal exudation test, for ten mixtures that were obtained through the pre-mixing and compressive strength tests. The results of the compressive strength test showed that all mixtures satisfied national and international standards. Cr, Cd and Hg were not detected, and Pb was detected only in some cases with fly ash. Cu and As were detected in all mixtures, but all of them satisfied national and international standards.

  • The effects of inspiratory muscle training in conjunction with aerobic exercise on inspiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, and maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max) were examined. Twenty four healthy collegiate men were divided into three groups; respiratory muscle training group(RTG; n=8), running exercise group(REG; n=8), and both respiratory muscle training and running group(BTG; n=8). Their pulmonary function, maximal inspiratory pressures(PImax), and VO2max were assessed before and after intervention. RTG underwent inspiratory muscle training(IMT) with load set to 50 % of PImax, 30 times per session, twice a day, 4 days a week REG ran on a treadmill at 70-75 % of VO2max for 30 min a day, 4 days a week. BTG participated both IMT and the running exercise. Participant's anthropometric parameters and pulmonary function were not changed. VO2max increased by 6.1±3.3 %, 5.9±6.6 %, and 10.0±8.3 % in RTG, REG, and BTG, respectively(p< .05), and PImax also increased by 21.7±14.3 %, 19.7±12.0 %, and 27.0±12.1 % in RTG, REG, and BTG, respectively, but no group differences were found. Based on the study, although statistically insignificant, BTG showed the biggest increase of VO2max and PImax indicating a possible synergic effect of inspiratory muscle training and aerobic exercise on respiratory responses.

  • In this study, we tried to find out the difference in confidence in performing Healthy Life on CPR before and after CPR education to middle school volunteers. Through the above statistical analysis process, the following findings were obtained: First, the general characteristics of the respondents who participated in this survey were higher than that of boys, followed by third, first and second graders. Second, junior high school volunteers were shown to have similar confidence (Chonbach's α=.80) and confidence (Chonbach's α=.76) before CPR education, and confidence in the degree of social contribution (Chonbach's α=7.77). Third, the Pearson Rates Correlation was performed to see the correlation between grade, gender, pre-education confidence, post-training confidence, confidence in the application of airway methods, confidence in the patient's breathing, confidence in chest compression, confidence in the use of defibrillators, and post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation education. As a result, it was confirmed that there was a significant correlation between all the spokesmen. In particular, post-training self-confidence was the highest correlation with coping confidence in case of cardiac arrest, followed by chest compressive confidence. Comparing and reviewing these findings and prior studies as shown above, we were able to establish that CPR education has an impact on the confidence performed by gender.

  • This study was conducted to find out differences in the removal efficiency of particulate matter (PM) depending on the type of plants and the morphological characteristics of leaves. A total of 12 plants were used, with three plants selected for each type of leaves (big leaf, small leaf, compound leaf, needle leaf). We measured the removed amount of PM10 and PM2.5, the structure of the abaxial leaf surface, and the weight of the wax layer of each plant. Plants with the high removal efficiency of PM included Pachira aquatica Aubl., Ardisia crenata, and Dieffenbachia 'Marianne', and plants with the low removal efficiency included Nandina domestica Thunb, Schefflera arboricola, and Quercus dentata. The abaxial leaf surface having a high removal efficiency of PM had many large wrinkles, and the abaxial leaf surface having a medium removal efficiency was flat and smooth. On the other hand, there were many fine hairs on the abaxial leaf surface with a low removal efficiency. According to the plant leaf type, the PM10 removal efficiency of plants with needle leaves was about three times higher than that of other plants. In particular, the wax layer of conifers weighed 6-24 times higher than those of other plants. The stomata of conifers were evenly distributed on the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces; however, the stomata of Sciadopitys verticillata appeared in the form of papillae unlike general stomata. Therefore, the removal efficiency of PM varied depending on the macro-, and micro-morphological characteristics of plant leaves such as the structure of the abaxial leaf surface, and the weight of the wax layer. Based on this research, selecting plants that are effective in reducing PM in consideration of the plant type and leaf characteristics will improve indoor air quality and decrease exposure of PM to human body.

  • Marital status has drawn much attention as previous studies have been pointed it out as a key factor of health. Nonetheless, systematic studies on elderly marital status and health have been quite limited, for most researches have neglected the varying effects of marital status on health over the lifespan and mainly focused on midlife. This study, using nationwide survey on elderly population, attempts to discover the health differentials between widowed and married elderly and explain the differences though the structure and function of their social network. The results reveal that the magnitudes of marital status effects were differed by dimensions of health. The widowed were more likely to be unhappy than married, even after controlling the socio-demographic characteristics. In physical health, however, the health differences between widowed and married were less noticeable or disappeared, as sex, age and other structure factors were considered. Furthermore, the strength of social network factors affecting the physical and mental health of elderly turned out to be different between married and widowed: widowed were more likely than married to be affected by the contact with children and less likely to be affected by contact with friends/relatives. Such results had both positive and negative impact on physical and mental health of widowed. This may imply the difference in pathways of regulating health among the married and widowed elderly.
