In this paper, experimental as well as numerical analysis of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminated composite has been presented under ballistic impact with varying projectile nose shapes (conical, ogival and spherical) and incidence velocities. The experimental impact tests on GFRP composite plate reinforced with woven glass fiber ($0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}$)s are performed by using pneumatic gun. A three dimensional finite element model is developed in AUTODYN hydro code to validate the experimental results and to study the ballistic perforation characteristic of the target with different parametric variations. The influence of projectile nose shapes, plate thickness and incidence velocity on the variation of residual velocity, ballistic limit, contact force-time histories, energy absorption, damage pattern and damage area in the composite target have been studied. The material characterization of GFRP composite is carried out as required for the progressive damage analysis of composite. The numerical results from the present FE model in terms of residual velocity, absorbed energy, damage pattern and damage area are having close agreement with the results from the experimental impact tests.
The paper presents the studies carried out on low velocity impact of Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) panels of size $350{\times}350{\times}10mm^3$ and $350{\times}350{\times}15mm^3$. The panels are cast with 2 and 2.5% micro steel fibre and compared with UHPC without fiber. The panels are subjected to low velocity impact, by a drop-weight hemispherical impactor, at three different energy levels of 10, 15 and 20 J. The impact force obtained from the experiments are compared with numerically obtained results using finite element method, theoretically by energy balance approach and empirically by nonlinear multi-genetic programming. The predictions by these models are found to be in good coherence with the experimental results.

The impact of a long-rod penetrator into oblique plates with combined obliquity and yaw is investigated. The study was done using a newly developed three dimensional dynamic and impact analysis code, which uses the explicit finite element method. Through the comparison of simulation result with experimental result and other code's result, the adaptability and accuracy of the developed code is evaluated under the complex situation in which yaw angle and oblique angle exist simultaneously. As a result of comparison, it has found that deformed shape, residual length and velocity, rotational velocity of long-rod show good agreement with experimental data. Through this study, the applicability and accuracy of the code as a metallic armour system design tool is verified.
This paper describes the formulation and application of a dynamic model for a conventional rail track subjected to arbitary loading functions that simulate wheel/rail impact forces. The rail track is idealized as a periodic elastically coupled beam system resting on a Winkler foundation. Modal parameters of the track structure are first obtained from the natural vibration characteristics of the beam system, which is discretized into a periodic assembly of a specially-constructed track element and a single beam element characterized by their exact dynamic stiffness matrices. An equivalent frequency-dependent spring coefficient representing the resilient, flexural and inertial characteristics of the rail support components is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom of the track element. The forced vibration equations of motion of the track subjected to a series of loading functions are then formulated by using beam bending theories and are reduced to second order ordinary differential equations through the use of mode summation with non-proportional modal damping. Numerical examples for the dynamic responses of a typical track are presented, and the solutions resulting from different rail/tie beam theories are compared.

In case of aluminum-cased battery, The ratio of height and base of square is generally above the ten times, square-shaped and problem of non-axis symmetry. It is typical model to set up the analysis method of finite element. The reliable analysis of finite element method is suggested, which is used to investigate the possibility that multi-stage deep drawing and ironing used currently is replaced by backward impact extrusion favorable in the respect of cost production and productivity. The influence of parameter was analyzed and compared, which was considered to analyze the process of large deformation plasticity such as extrusion. Die and billet was made as the same shape of finite element model. The results of experiment show good forming without the rupture and wrinkles with the optimum velocity 100mm/sec obtained by analysis.

The characteristics of noise and vibration by a heavy impact source was studied. The triggering method was used for increasing the reliability and stability to measure the level of sound pressure. sound intensity and vibration acceleration. A simple finite element model and a rigid body analysis method were suggested to calculate the natural frequencies of the multi-layer floor system. The results show that the resilient materials decrease the natural frequency of the reinforced concrete slab, make a resonance with dominant driving frequency in the low frequency region, and increase the vibration and noise level. A simple finite element model and rigid body models was suggested to calculate the natural frequencies of the floor systems.

The response analysis of frame structure with open section beams considering warping conditions and short duration load have been performed. When a beam of frame structure is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform a warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. Because of impact or blast loads, the wave propagation effects become increasingly important as load duration decreases. This paper presents that a warping restraint in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation, dynamic mode shape and response analysis. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame. A method to estimate the number of normal modes that are important is discussed.

To investigate the validity of the finite element analysis program to assess structural integrity of a spent nuclear fuel transport cask subjected to extreme impact loads, structural integrity of the cask for the case of an aircraft engine collision is evaluated using three FE analysis programs: Autodyn, Speed and ABAQUS explicit version. As a result of all analyses, it is confirmed that no penetration occurred in the cask wall. Even though the different programs are used, it is identified that there are insignificant differences in the FE analysis variables such as von Mises effective stress and equivalent plastic strain among the programs.
Investigations of the commercial aircraft impact effect on nuclear island infrastructures have been drawing extensive attention, and this paper aims to perform the safety assessment of Generation III nuclear power plant (NPP) buildings subjected to typical commercial aircrafts crash. At present Part II, based on the verified finite element (FE) models of aircrafts Airbus A320 and A380, as well as the NPP containment and auxiliary buildings in Part I of this paper, the whole collision process is reproduced numerically by adopting the coupled missile-target interaction approach with the finite element code LS-DYNA. The impact induced damage of NPP plant under four impact locations of containment (cylinder, air intake, conical roof and PCS water tank) and two impact locations of auxiliary buildings (exterior wall and roof of spent fuel pool room) are evaluated. Furthermore, by considering the inner structures in the containment and raft foundation of NPP, the structural vibration analyses are conducted under two impact locations (middle height of cylinder, main control room in the auxiliary buildings). It indicates that, within the discussed scenarios, NPP structures can withstand the impact of both two aircrafts, while the functionality of internal equipment on higher floors will be affected to some extent under impact induced vibrations, and A380 aircraft will cause more serious structural damage and vibrations than A320 aircraft. The present work can provide helpful references to assess the safety of the structures and inner equipment of NPP plant under commercial aircraft impact.
This paper describes the results of experiments and numerical simulation studies on the impact and indentation damage created by low-velocity impact subjected onto honeycomb sandwich panels for application to the BIMODAL tram. The test panels were subjected to low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at six energy levels. Contact force histories as a function of time were evaluated and compared. The extent of the damage and depth of the permanent indentation was measured quantitatively using a 3-dimensional scanner. An explicit finite element analysis based on LS-DYNA3D was focused on the introduction of a material damage model and numerical simulation of low-velocity impact responses on honeycomb sandwich panels. Extensive material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the metallic and composite face-sheet materials and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb core material. Good agreement was obtained between numerical and experimental results; in particular, the numerical simulation was able to predict impact damage area and the depth of indentation of honeycomb sandwich composite panels created by the impact loading.
