  • This experiment was conducted to determine the agronomic characteristics for selection of the excellent barnyard millet and the herbicidal response for their weediness prevention in paddy rice. IT170609, IT195422 and EV2012 have produced more dry matter compared to other barnyard millets tested. In varietal characteristics by heading date, IT170609 showed medium maturing type and IT195422 and EV201 had late maturing type. The germination rate of IT170609, IT195422 and EV2012 on temperature was higher than Echnochloa oryzicola of native species, and it was definitely distinctive at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$. In the herbicidal response for their weediness prevention in paddy rice, imazosulfuron+benzobicyclone+penoxsulam SC showed control effect the extend of over 90% to IT170609, IT195422 and EV2012. Cyhalofop-butyl EC, penoxsulam SC and metamifop EC were very effective by 6~7 leaf stage of barnyard millets tested.

  • A suspected biotype of Scirpus planiculmis to be resistant to sulfonylurea(SU) herbicides was identified in Seosan reclaimed paddy fields in Korea, in 2004. The fields have been cultivated for monocultural rice production with wet-direct seeding method and continuously treated with SU-based herbicide mixtures for thirteen years since 1990. In greenhouse studies, 6 different SU herbicides, such as azimsulfuron, bensulfuron-methyl, cinosulfuron, ethoxysulfuron imazosulfuron and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, completely controlled the Musan assession of Scirpus planiculmis at the recommended dose of each herbicide, however, the Seosan accession of S. planiculmis biotype was survived 20 to 45% even treated with 5 times higher dose of each recommended rate of all herbicides treated. The $GR_{50}$ values of 6 SU herbicides for Seosan accession of S. planiculmis were 47 to 100 times higher than those for Musan accession of S. planiculmis. The $I_{50}$ values pyrazosulfuron-ethyl to acetolactate synthase(ALS) extracted from Sesan and Muan accession of S. planiculmis were 409 nM and 0.8 nM, respectively. The $I_{50}$ value of Seosan was 511 times higher than that of Muan accession. These results suggested that the Seosan accession of S. planiculmis have strong resistant characteristics to 6 SU herbicides, respectively, indicating that resistance might be due to the alteration in the target site of ALS.

  • Field experiments were conducted to predict rice yield losses caused by Echinochloa crus-galli (L.)P. Beauv., Bidens frondosa L. and Aeschynomeme indica L. at a range of plant densities under machine transplanted rice cultivation in different regions of Korea in 2006, and to determine their economic threshold levels (ET). All data were fitted to Cousens' rectangular hyperbola to estimate parameters for predicting rice yield loss. The rice yield loss models of Bidens frondosa L. was predicted as y=5.43/(1+0.0113x), $R^2$=0.963, A. indica was y=5.47/(1+0.0332x), $R^2$=0.976 and E. crus-galli y=5.43/(1+0.01552x), $R^2$=0.950. The mean competitivities represented by the parameter, whose reciprocal ($1/{\beta}$) is a weed density reducing crop yield by 50%. Those of E. crus-galli, B. frondosa and A. indica were 0.01552, 0.01113 and 0.0332 in normal-season machine transplanting of Korea, respectively. Single year mean economic thresholds (ET) of A. indica were 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7 plant $m^{-2}$ with the application of flucetosulfuron, flucetosulfuron+imazosulfuron GR and flucetosulfuron+imazosulfuron+carfentrazone GR herbicides, respectively. Meanwhile ET values of 1.6, 1.9 and 1.9 plants $m^{-2}$ for B. frondosa, 1.2, 1.4, and 1.4 plants $m^{-2}$ for E. crus-galli.

  • Bromobutide, a paddy field herbicide, can effectively control annual and perennial weeds. It has an excellent weeding effect especially against Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides etc. When it is mixed with other herbicides controlling weed spectrum and application timing can be broaden. Bromobutide has stable weeding effects regardless of field and weather conditions, and there is almost no phyototoxic effects to rice.

  • Monochoria vaginalis is one of the most troublesome resistant weeds in Korean rice culture. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the response of M. vaginalis resistant to sulfonylurea(SU) herbicides and to determine alternative herbicides for the control of resistant M. vaginalis in direct seeded and transplanted rice culture in Korea. In greenhouse studies, the resistant biotype was 31-, 38-, 3172-, and 7-fold more resistant to ben-sulfuron-methyl, cyclosulfamuron, imazosulfuron, and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, respectively, than the susceptible biotype, indicating cross-resistance to the SU herbicides used in this study. Non-SU herbicides, butachlor, carfentrazone-ethyl, mefenacet, pretilachlor, pyrazolate, and thiobencarb, several SU herbicide-based mixtures, ethoxysulfuron plus fentrazamide, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl plus pyrazolate plus simetryn, and non-SU herbicide-based mixtures, pyrazolate plus butachlor, pyrazolate plus pretilachlor, simetryn plus molinate, carfentrazone-ethyl plus butachlor, and carfentrazone-ethyl plus thiobencarb can be used to control both the resistant and susceptible biotypes of M. vaginalis when applied before the second leaf stage. In the field experiment, the resistant biotype of M. vaginalis that survived from the paddy fields treated with a SU herbicide-based mixture could effectively be controlled by using mixtures of bentazone plus MCPA, bentazone plus mecoprop-P, and bentazone plus 2,4-D when applied at 2 or 4 main leaves. Our results suggest that the SU-resistant M. vaginalis had not developed multiple resistances to herbicides with different modes of action. In particular, bentazone plus MCPA and bentazone plus mecoprop-P were effective control measures after failure to control resistant M. vaginalis in Korean rice culture.

  • The occurrence of sulfonylurea-resistant weeds has recently increased in Korea. A survey was performed to investigate major paddy field weeds and frequently used herbicides in Gangwon province, Korea in order to establish a system to efficiently control herbicide-resistant weeds. The dominant paddy field weeds included Monochoria vaginalis (14%), Sagittaria trifolia (14%), Scirpus juncoides (13%), and Echinochloa spp. (13%), and the most widely used herbicides were oxadiazon 12% EC (27%), butachlor 5% GR (20%), oxadiargyl 1.7% EC (16%), and benzobicyclon+imazosulfuron+pyriminobac-methyl 6.1% SC (14%) in Gangwon province, Korea. Many paddy rice growers considered Scirpus juncoides, S. trifolia, Echinochloa spp. and M. vaginalis as herbicide-resistant weeds. An extensive research deserves to be conducted to monitor occurrence of herbicide-resistant paddy weeds in Gangwon province, Korea.

  • This study was conducted to find the effective management of main weeds including herbicide-resistant Echinochloa oryzicola, Scirpus juncoides and Monochoria vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface. The dominant dominances in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface were increased for three years between 2009-2011. In weed distribution in 2011, the occurrence density of S. juncoides decreased greatly, but it of E. oryzicola increased especially as compared with it of 2009. Benzobicyclon, mesotrione and pyrimisulfan were effective to sulfonylurea(SU)-resistant S. juncoides and M. vaginalis at 5 and 12 days after seeding, however, the efficacy of bromobutide to sulfonylurea-resistant M. vaginalis was decreased slightly at 12 days after seeding. And carfentrazon and pyrazolate were ineffective to S. juncoides. In direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface which ACCase and ALS inhibitor-resistant E. oryzicola was not occurred, benzobicyclon+penoxsulam+pyrazosulfuron-ethyl ET, bromobutide+imazosulfuron+metamifop GR, and flucetosulfuron+mesotrione+pretilachlor GR showed the control effect over 94% to main weeds included sulfonylurea-resistant S. juncoides and M. vaginalis. The E. oryzicola dominating in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface were not any affected to the survival by treatment with recommended doses of cyhalofop-butyl and penoxsulam tested. The ACCase and ALS inhibitor-resistant E. oryzicola was effectively controlled by mefenacet and fentrazamide up to the 2nd leaf stage. In direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface domiating coincidentally by herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis, "one-shot herbicide" included with mefenacet, fentrazamide, penoxsulam and metamifop could't be used because of low control effect or rice injury. The sequential treatment of benzobicyclon+thiobencarb SE and bensulfuron+mefenacet+thiobencarb GR controlled effectively the herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface. The days required by the 3rd leaf stage of herbicide-resistant E. oryzicola, S. juncoides and M. vaginalis in direct seeded rice on puddled paddy surface seeded in May 20 shortened by 4 days as compared with it of June 10.

  • Sulfonylurea (SU)-resistant weeds include seven annual weeds such as Monochoria vaginalis, Scirpus juncoides and Cyperus difformis, etc., and three perennial weeds of Scirpus planiculmis, Sagittaria pigmaea and Eleocharis acicularis as of 2010 since identification Monochoria korsakowii in the reclaimed rice field in 1998. The Echinochloa oryzoides resistant to acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors has been confirmed in wet-direct seeding rice field of the southern province, Korea in 2009. In the beginning of occurrence of SU-resistant weeds the M. vaginalis, S. juncoides and C. difformis were rapidly and individually spreaded in different fields, however, theses resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed as time goes by. The resistant biotype by weed species demonstrated about 10- to 1,000-fold resistance, base on $GR_{50}$ (50% growth reduction) values of the SU herbicides tested. And the resistant biotype of E. oryzoides to cyhalofop-butyl, pyriminobac-methyl, and penoxsulam was about 14, 8, and 11 times more resistant than the susceptible biotype base on $GR_{50}$ values. In history of paddy herbicides in Korea, the introduction of SU herbicides including besulfuron-metyl and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl that control many troublesome weeds at low use rates and provide excellent crop safety gave farmers and many workers for herbicide business refreshing jolt. The products and applied area of SU-included herbicides have been rapidly increased, and have accounted for about 69% and 96%, respectively, in Korea. The top ten herbicides by applied area were composed of all SU-included herbicides by 2003. The concentrated and successive treatment of ACCase and ALS inhibitors for control of barnyardgrass in direct-seeded rice led up to the resistance of E. oryzoides. Also, SU-herbicides like pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and imazosulfuron which are effective to barnyardgrass can be bound up with the resistance of E. oryzoides. The ALS activity isolated from the resistant biotype of M. korsakowii to SU-herbicides tested was less sensitive than that of susceptible biotype. The concentration of herbicide required for 50% inhibition of ALS activity ($I_{50}$) of the SU-resistant M. korsakowii was 14- to 76-fold higher as compared to the susceptible biotype. No differences were observed in the rates of [$^{14}C$]bensulfuron uptake and translocation. ALS genes from M. vaginalis resistant and susceptible biotypes against SU-herbicides revealed a single amino acid substitution of proline (CCT), at 197th position based on the M. korsakowii ALS sequence numbering, to serin (TCT) in conserved domain A of the gene. Carfentrazone-ethyl and pyrazolate were used mainly to control SU-resistant M. vaginalis by 2006, the early period, in Korea. However, the alternative herbicides such as benzobicyclone, to be possible to control simultaneously the several resistant weeds, have been developing and using broadly because the several resistant weeds have been occurring simultaneously in the same filed. The top ten herbicides by applied area in Korea have been occupied by products of 3-way mixture type including herbicides with alternative mode of action for the herbicide resistant weeds. Mefenacet, fentrazamide and cafenstrole had excellent controlling effects on the ACCase and ALS inhibitors resistant when they were applied within 2 leaf stage.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of several herbicides for rice and weed control with herbicides application times and seeding times in flooded direct-seeded rice field. The phytotoxicity of herbieides(bensulfuron methyl+dimepiperate, bensulfuron methyl+mefenacet+dymron, bensulfuron methyl+quinclorac, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+molinate, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+cyhalofop, imazosulfuron+molinate, imazosul-furon+cyhalofop) for rice in different seeding dates was the most high at 7 days after seeding(DAS) Followed by 12 and 17 DAS. In particular, the bensulfuron methyl+mefenacet+dymron showed very high phytotoxicity to rice plants. Weed species occurred in direct-seeding field seeded on May 1 were 10 species (grasses ; 1, broad-leaves ; 6, sedges ; 3) and Echinochloa crus-galli was the most dominant weed among them. Whereas weed species occurred rice field seeded on May 22 were 7 species(grasses ; 1, broad-leaves : 3, ridges ; 3) and Echirochloa crus-galli was the most dominant weed among them. The weed control for annual weeds(Echinochloa crus-galli, Aneilema keisak, and so on) and perennial weeds(Cyperus serotinus, Scipurus juncoides) was remarkably effective at the application of 7 and 12 DAS, but it of Eleocharis kuroguwai was effective at the application of 17 DAS on two seeding times. The yields were decreased significantly at the plot affected severely by herbicides applied at 7 DAS and the plots showed low efficacy at herbicides application of 17 DAS.
