When the time-harmonic plane wave is incident upon a high-contrast spherical cavity in a lossy medium, the incoherent shadow intensity pattern is acquired by averaging out the multi-frequency intensities of the co-polarized total electric field calculated at the measurement plane perpendicular to the propagating direction of the incident wave in the forward direction. In the spherical rotational measurement configuration, an incoherent imaging of the spherical cavity is obtained via the back-projections of the incoherent shadow intensity pattern. This imaging method is validated by imaging an air sphere in the lossy medium of ${\epsilon}_r$ = 2 and $\sigma$ = 0.001, 0.003 S/m and the conditions for obtaining better images are investigated.
Purpose Proton therapy can deliver an optimal dose to tumor while reducing unnecessary dose to normal tissue as compared the conventional photon therapy. As proton beams are irradiated into tissue, various positron emitters are produced via nuclear fragmentation reactions. These positron emitters could be used for the dose verification by using PET. However, the short half-life of the radioisotopes makes it hard to obtain the enough amounts of events. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of off-line PET imaging scan time on the PET image quality. Materials and Methods The various diameters of spheres (D=37, 28, 22 mm) filled with distilled water were inserted in a 2001 IEC body phantom. Then proton beams (100 MU) were irradiated into the center of the each sphere using the wobbling technique with the gantry angle of $0^{\circ}$. The modulation widths of the spread out bragg peak were 16.4, 14.7 and 9.3 cm for the spheres of 37, 28 and 22 mm in diameters respectively. After 5 min of the proton irradiation, the PET images of the IEC body phantom were obtained for 50 min. The PET images with different time courses (0-10 min, 11-20 min, 21-30 min, 31-40 min and 41-50 min) were obtained by dividing the frame with a duration of 10 min. In order to evaluate the off-line PET image quality with the different time courses, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the PET image calculated for each sphere. Results The CNRs of the sphere (D=37 mm) were 0.43, 0.42, 0.40, 0.31 and 0.21 for the time courses of 0-10 min, 11-20 min, 21-30 min, 31-40 min and 41-50 min respectively. The CNRs of the sphere (D=28 mm) were 0.36, 0.32, 0.27, 0.19 and 0.09 for the time courses of 0-10 min, 11-20 min, 21-30 min, 31-40 min and 41-50 min respectively. The CNR of 37 mm sphere was decreased rapidly after 30 min of the proton irradiation. In case of the spheres of 28 mm and 22 mm, the CNR was decreased drastically after 20 min of the irradiation. Conclusion The off-line PET imaging time is an important factor for the monitoring of the proton therapy. In case of the lesion diameter of 22 mm, the off-line PET image should be obtained within 25 min after the proton irradiation. When it comes to small size of tumor, the long PET imaging time will be beneficial for the proton therapy treatment monitoring.
We present our recent work published in the MNRAS (Lee and Kim, 2014). Numerical studies of the imaging and caustic properties of the singular isothermal sphere (SIS) under a wide range of external shear (from 0.0 to 2.0) are presented. Using a direct inverse mapping formula for this lensing system, we investigate various lensing properties for both low-shear (i.e. ${\gamma}$<1.0) and high-shear (i.e. ${\gamma}$ >1.0) cases. We systematically analyse the effective lensing cross-sections of double-lensing and quadruple-lensing systems, based on the radio luminosity function obtained by the Jodrell-VLA Astrometric Survey (JVAS) and the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS). We find that the limit of a survey selection bias (i.e. between brighter and fainter images) preferentially reduces the effective lensing cross-sections of two-image lensing systems. By considering the effects of survey selection bias, we demonstrate that the long-standing anomaly over the high quads-to-doubles ratios (i.e. 50~70 % for JVAS and CLASS) can be explained by the moderate effective shear of 0.16~0.18, which is half that of previous estimates. The derived inverse-mapping formula could make the SIS + shear lensing model useful for galaxy-lensing simulations.

Respiratory-induced dynamic tumors render free-breathing cone-beam computed tomography (FBCBCT) images with motion artifacts complicating the task of quantifying the internal target volume (ITV). The purpose of this paper is to study the visibility of the revealed ITV when the imaging dose parameters, such as the kVp and mAs, are varied. The $Trilogy^{TM}$ linear accelerator with an On-Board Imaging ($OBI^{TM}$) system was used to acquire low-imaging-dose-mode (LIDM: 110 kVp, 20 mA, 20 ms/frame) and high-imaging-dose-mode (HIDM: 125 kVp, 80 mA, 25 ms/frame) FBCBCT images of a 3-cm diameter sphere (density=0.855 $g/cm^3$) moving in accordance to various sinusoidal breathing patterns, each with an unique inhalation-to-exhalation (I/E) ratio, amplitude, and period. In terms of image ITV contrast, there was a small overall average change of the ITV contrast when going from HIDM to LIDM of $6.5{\pm}5.1%$ for all breathing patterns. As for the ITV visible volume measurements, there was an insignificant difference between the ITV of both the LIDM- and HIDM-FBCBCT images with an average difference of $0.5{\pm}0.5%$, for all cases, despite the large difference in the imaging dose (approximately five-fold difference of ~0.8 and 4 cGy/scan). That indicates that the ITV visibility is not very sensitive to changes in imaging dose. However, both of the FBCBCT consistently underestimated the true ITV dimensions by up to 34.8% irrespective of the imaging dose mode due to significant motion artifacts, and thus, this imaging technique is not adequate to accurately visualize the ITV for image guidance. Due to the insignificant impact of imaging dose on ITV visibility, a plausible, alternative strategy would be to acquire more X-ray projections at the LIDM setting to allow 4DCBCT imaging to better define the ITV, and at the same time, maintain a reasonable imaging dose, i.e., comparable to a single HIDM-FBCBCT scan.

Gamma-ray Detector for gamma-ray imaging device is composed of a shielding body for shielding gamma-rays incident from the radiation source. Distribution of the gamma ray can be represented by the distribution information on the direction in which the detecting section and the signal through the incident hole of collimator. The role of the shield is important because all signals should be treated as noise except for the signal from the incident hole.In this paper In this paper, we have produced a compact, lightweight and Collimator shield by changing the structure and physical properties with respect to the collimator and shielding of lead-based gamma-ray detectors. And we analyzed the shielding effectiveness relative to the incident gamma ray sphere measured signal value through the gamma irradiation test facility. The results confirmed that the production and Collimator shielding the imaging device Implementing more efficient to implement.

Surface visualization can be useful, particularly for internet-based education and simulation system. Since the mesh data size directly affects the downloading and operational performance, the problem that should be solved for efficient surface visualization is to reduce the total number of polygons, constituting the surface geometry as much as Possible. In this paper, an efficient polygon reduction algorithm based on Stokes' theorem, and topology preservation to delete several adjacent vertices simultaneously for past polygon reduction is proposed. The algorithm is irrespective of the shape of polygon, and the number of the polygon. It can also reduce the number of polygons to the minimum number at one time. The performance and the usefulness for medical imaging application was demonstrated using synthesized geometrical objects including plane. cube. cylinder. and sphere. as well as a real human data.

In this study, numerical simulations were conducted for conjugate heat transfer around ice balls in an encapsulated ice thermal storage system. Four shapes of ice balls were modeled; the default one was a sphere, and the other three shapes were designed to enhance convective heat transfer through the ball surface. The flow around the ball was laminar, for which the Reynolds number was 300, and both forced and natural convections inside and outside the balls were considered. The simulations revealed that the magnitude of convective heat transfer for the different shapes decreased in the following order: bone, dimple, hole, and sphere. For the entire simulation, the maximum difference in the average temperatures of water inside the capsules was found to be $0.9^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it can be said that the effect of ice-ball shape on the performance of the ice thermal storage system is significant, considering that more than 0.3 million balls are used in this system.
PET/CT(Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) is an examination combining morphological and functional information in one examination. The purpose of this study is to see the lowest CT dose for attenuation correction in the PET/CT maintaining good image quality when considering CT scan dose to the patients. We injected $^{18}F$-FDG and water into the cylinder shaped phantom, and obtained emission images for 3 mins and transmission images(140 kVp, 8 sec, 10~200 mA for transmission images), and reconstructed the images to PET/CT images with Iterative method. Data(Maximum, Minimum, Average, Standard Deviation) were obtained by drawing a circular ROI(Region Of Interest) on each sphere in each image set with Image J program. And then described SD according to the CT and PEC/CT images as graphes. Through the graphes, we got the relationships of mA and quality of images. SDs according to CT graph were 16.25 at 10 mA, 7.26 at 50 mA, 5.5 at 100 mA, 4.29 at 150 mA, and 3.83 at 200 mA, i.e. the higer mA, the better image quality was presented. SDs according to PET/CT graph were 1823.2 at 10 mA, 1825.1 at 50 mA, 1828.4 at 100 mA, 1813.8 at 150 mA, and 1811.3 at 200 mA. Calculated SDs at PET/CT images were maintained. This means images quality is maintained having nothing to do with mA of high and low.
The Korean VLBI Network (KVN) will open a new field of research in astronomy, geodesy and earth science using the newest three Elm radio telescopes. This will expand our ability to look at the Universe in the millimeter regime. Imaging capability of radio interferometry is highly dependent upon the antenna configuration, source size, declination and the shape of target. In this paper, imaging simulations are carried out with the KVN system configuration. Five test images were used which were a point source, multi-point sources, a uniform sphere with two different sizes compared to the synthesis beam of the KVN and a Very Large Array (VLA) image of Cygnus A. The declination for the full time simulation was set as +60 degrees and the observation time range was -6 to +6 hours around transit. Simulations have been done at 22GHz, one of the KVN observation frequency. All these simulations and data reductions have been run with the Astronomical Image Processing System (AIPS) software package. As the KVN array has a resolution of about 6 mas (milli arcsecond) at 220Hz, in case of model source being approximately the beam size or smaller, the ratio of peak intensity over RMS shows about 10000:1 and 5000:1. The other case in which model source is larger than the beam size, this ratio shows very low range of about 115:1 and 34:1. This is due to the lack of short baselines and the small number of antenna. We compare the coordinates of the model images with those of the cleaned images. The result shows mostly perfect correspondence except in the case of the 12mas uniform sphere. Therefore, the main astronomical targets for the KVN will be the compact sources and the KVN will have an excellent performance in the astrometry for these sources.
This study offers a Monte Carlo alternative for computing mass energy absorption coefficients of any material through calculation of photon energy deposited per mass of the sample and the energy flux obtained inside a sample volume. This approach is applied in this study to evaluate mass energy absorption coefficients of some amino acids found in human body at twenty-eight different photon energies between 10 keV and 20 MeV. The simulations involved a pencil beam source modeled to emit a parallel beam of mono-energetic photons toward a 1 mean free path thick sample of rectangular parallelepiped geometry. All the components in the problem geometry were surrounded by a 100 cm vacuum sphere to avoid any interactions in materials other than the absorber itself. The results computed using the Monte Carlo radiation transport packages MCNP6.2 and GAMOS5.1 were checked against the theoretical values available from the tables of XMUDAT database. These comparisons indicate very good agreement and support the conclusion that Monte Carlo technique utilized in this fashion may be used as a computational tool for determining the mass energy absorption coefficients of any material whose data are not available in the literature.
