  • The tympanic plate is a small part of the temporal bone that separates the mandibular condyle from the external auditory canal. Fracture of this small plate is rare and usually associated with other bony fractures, mainly temporal and mandibular bone. There is a limited amount of literature on this subject, which increases the chance of cases being overlooked by physicians and radiologists. This is further supported by purely isolated cases of tympanic plate fracture without evidence of other bony fractures. Cone-beam computed tomography is an investigative three-dimensional imaging modality that can be used to detect fine structures and fractures in maxillofacial trauma. This article presents four cases of isolated tympanic plate fracture diagnosed by cone-beam computed tomography with no evidence of fracture involving other bones and review of the literature.

  • In this paper a damage imaging technique using pre-stack migration is developed using Lamb (guided) wave propagation in composite structures for imaging multi damages by both numerical simulations and experimental studies. In particular, the paper focuses on the experimental study using a finite number of sensors for future practical applications. A composite laminate with a surface-mounted linear piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) disk array is illustrated as an example. Two types of damages, one straight-crack damage and two simulated circular-shaped delamination damage, have been studied. First, Mindlin plate theory is used to model Lamb waves propagating in laminates. The group velocities of flexural waves in the composite laminate are also derived from dispersion relations and validated by experiments. Then the pre-stack migration technique is performed by using a two-dimensional explicit finite difference algorithm to back-propagate the scattered energy to the damages and damages are imaged together with the excitation-time imaging conditions. Stacking these images together deduces the resulting image of damages. Both simulations and experimental results show that the pre-stack migration method is a promising method for damage identification in composite structures.

  • This paper proposes a two-stage imaging approach for quantitative inspection of damages in metallic plates using the fundamental anti-symmetric mode of ($A_0$) Lamb wave. The proposed approach employs a number of transducers to transmit and receive $A_0$ Lamb wave pulses, and hence, to sequentially scan the plate structures before and after the presence of damage. The approach is applied to image the corrosion damages, which are simplified as a reduction of plate thickness in this study. In stage-one of the proposed approach a damage location image is reconstructed by analyzing the cross-correlation of the wavelet coefficient calculated from the excitation pulse and scattered wave signals for each transducer pairs to determine the damage location. In stage-two the Lamb wave diffraction tomography is then used to reconstruct a thickness reduction image for evaluating the size and depth of the damage. Finite element simulations are carried out to provide a comprehensive verification of the proposed imaging approach. A number of numerical case studies considering a circular transducer network with eight transducers are used to identify the damages with different locations, sizes and thicknesses. The results show that the proposed methodology is able to accurately identify the damage locations with inaccuracy of the order of few millimeters of a circular inspection area of $100mm^2$ and provide a reasonable estimation of the size and depth of the damages.

  • This paper presents an analytical investigation for a baseline-free imaging of a defect in plate-like structures using the time-reversal of Lamb waves. We first consider the flexural wave (A0 mode) propagation in a plate containing a defect, and reception and time reversal process of the output signal at the receiver. The received output signal is then composed of two parts: a directly propagated wave and a scattered wave from the defect. The time reversal of these waves recovers the original input signal, and produces two additional side bands that contain the time-of-flight information on the defect location. One of the side band signals is then extracted as a pure defect signal. A defect localization image is then constructed from a beamforming technique based on the time-frequency analysis of the side band signal for each transducer pair in a network of sensors. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme enables the accurate, baseline-free detection of a defect, so that experimental studies are needed to verify the proposed method and to be applied to real structure.

  • Purpose : Image plate (IP) is substituted for film in computed radiography. This study is to investigate into a variation of contrast and detail by the number used of image plate in computed radiography. Materials and Methods : A Contrast-Detail(CD)-RAD 2.0 phantom(Nijmegen hospital, The Netherlands) was used for this study. The computed radiography(CR) CD-RAD phantom images were acquired at 40 kVp, 160 mA, 1.6 mAs, and small focus with the Shimadzu general radiography UD-150B-10 system and Fuji FCR 5000 image process system with speed of 200. The IP used including once, 5000 times, and 10000 times also was used. The numerical value of image quality figures (IQF) was produced by CD-RAD analyser(the program is installed in the directory), and then contrast-detail curve was drawn. Results : In this study, the value of IQF was 3.53 in IP used once, 3.40 in 5000 times, and 3.22 in 10000 times. Conclusions : There was a variation of contrast-detail curve by the number used of IP with contrast-detail phantom in computed radiography. Therefore, it is necessary that the IP with lower IQF and a shift of contrast-detail curve to the lower left part is used.

  • Optical imaging systems that operate through atmospheric pathways often suffer from image degradation, mainly caused by the distortion of light waves due to turbulence in the atmosphere. Adaptive optics technology can be used to correct the image distortion caused by atmospheric disturbances. However, there are challenges in conducting experiments with strong atmospheric conditions. An optical phase plate (OPP) is a device that can simulate real atmospheric conditions in a lab setting. We suggest a novel two-step process to fabricate an OPP capable of simulating the effects of atmospheric turbulence. The proposed fabrication method simplifies the process by eliminating additional activities such as phase-screen design and phase simulation. This enables an efficient and economical fabrication of the OPP. We conducted our analysis using the statistical fluctuations of the refractive index and applied modal expansion using Kolmogorov's theory. The experiment aims to fabricate an OPP with parameters D/r0 ≈ 30 and r0 ≈ 5 cm. The objective is defined with the strong atmospheric conditions. Finally, we have fabricated an OPP that satisfied the desired objectives. The OPP closely simulate turbulence to real atmospheric conditions.
