  • It has been reported that if eight small nozzles are arranged along the circle of 40 $^{\sim}$ 72 times the diameter of single nozzle, the propane non-premixed flames are not extinguished even in 200m/s, In this research, experiments were extended to the methane flame. Nine nozzles were used- eight was evenly located along the perimeter of the imaginary circle and one at the geometric center. The space between nozzles, s, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the center nozzle were considered. On the contrary to the propane non-premixed case, the maximum blowout velocity for the methane diffusion flame was achieved when small amount of fuel is supplied through the center nozzle and s/d equals around 21. In the laminar region, the flame attached at the center nozzle anchored the outer lifted flames.

  • Since the eddy current problem usually depends on the geometry of the moving conductive sheet and the shape of the pole projection area, there is no general method to find out its analytical solution. The analysis of the eddy current in a rotating disk is performed in the case of time-invariant field to find its analytical solution. As a method to solve the eddy current problem, the concept of the Coulomb charge and image method are proposed with the consideration of the boundary condition. Firstly, the line charge is obtained from the volume charge generated in the rotating disk and Coulomb's law is applied. Secondly, the finite disk radius is considered by introducing an imaginary eddy current to satisfy the boundary condition that the radial component of the eddy current is zero at the edge of the relating disk. Thirdly, the braking torque is calculated by applying Lorentz force law. Finally, the computed braking torque is compared with the measured one As a result, it can be said that the proposed model presents fairly accurate results in a low angular velocity range although a large error is observed as the angular velocity of the disk increases.

  • In recent years, microtremor array observations have been used for estimation of shear-wave velocity structures. One of the methods is the conventional spatial autocorrelation (SPAC) method, which requires simultaneous recording at least with three or four sensors. Modified SPAC methods such as 2sSPAC, and linear array methods, allow estimating shear-wave structures by using only two sensors, but suffer from instability of the spatial autocorrelation coefficient for frequency ranges higher than 1.0 Hz. Based on microtremor measurements from four different size triangular arrays and four same-size triangular and linear arrays, we have demonstrated the stability of SPAC coefficient for the frequency range from 2 to 4 or 5 Hz. The phase velocities, obtained by fitting the SPAC coefficients to the Bessel function, are also consistent up to the frequency 5 Hz. All data were processed by the SPAC method, with the exception of the spatial averaging for the linear array cases. The arrays were deployed sequentially at different times, near a site having existing Parallel Seismic (PS) borehole logging data. We also used the imaginary part of the SPAC coefficients as a data-quality indicator. Based on perturbations of the autocorrelation spectrum (and in some cases on visual examination of the record waveforms) we divided data into so-called 'reliable' and 'unreliable' categories. We then calculated the imaginary part of the SPAC spectrum for 'reliable', 'unreliable', and complete (i.e. 'reliable' and 'unreliable' datasets combined) datasets for each array, and compared the results. In the case of insufficient azimuthal distribution of the stations (the linear array) the imaginary curve shows some instability and can therefore be regarded as an indicator of insufficient spatial averaging. However, in the case of low coherency of the wavefield the imaginary curve does not show any significant instability.

  • Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.

  • This paper aimed for numerical simulation of complicated gas turbine combustor with swirler. For the convenience of numerical analysis, fuel nozzle and air linear hole areas of secondary and dilution zone, which are issued to jet stream, were simplified to equivalent areas of annular type. In other to solve these problems, imaginary source terms which are corresponded to supplied fuel amount were added to those of governing equation. Chemical equilibrium model of infinite reaction rate and $k-{\epsilon}-g$ model with the consideration of density fluctuation were applied. As the result, swirl intensity contributed to mixing of supplied fuel and air, and to speed up the flame velocity than no swirl condition. Temperature profiles were higher than experimental results at the upstream and lower at the downstream, but total energy balance was accomplished. As these properties showed the similar trend qualitatively, simplified simulation method was worth to apply to complicated combustor for predicting combustion characteristics.

  • It has been reported that the interacting multiple jet flames of propane fuel are not extinguished even at the choking velocity at the nozzle exit if eight small nozzles are arranged along the imaginary circle of $40{\sim}72$ times the diameter of single nozzle. In this research, experiments were conducted to know the NO and CO emission characteristics of the interacting flames. Measurements along the centerline of the flame revealed that decrease in CO concentration was followed by the NO decrease and $O_2$ increase. It was found that interacting flame emitted less NO than that of similar area single jet flame. Also, NO emission of partially premixed interacting flame was decreased up to $17\%$ of that of non-premixed multiple jet flame. Though the mechanism of the NO reduction was not clear from this experiment, it's been shown that partially premixed multiple jet flames could be used to achieve clean and highly stable combustion.

  • This paper shows how to formulate the transient analysis of 2-dimensional Hagen-Poiseuille flow using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Treatments of viscosity, particle approximation and boundary conditions are explained. Numerical tests are calculated to examine effects caused by the number of particles, the number of particles per smoothing length, artificial viscosity and time increments for 2-dimensional Hagen-Poiseuille flow. Artificial viscosity for reducing the numerical instability directly affects the velocity of the flow, though effects of the other parameters do not produce as much effect as artificial viscosity. Numerical solutions using SPH show close agreement with the exact ones for the model flow, but SPH parameter must be chosen carefully Numerical solutions indicate that SPH is also an effective method for the analysis of 2-dimensional Hagen-Poiseuille flow.

  • The motion of two-dimensional floating breakwaters with rectangular clots-section which are moored tautly in shallow water has been analyzed using a velocity potential matching method in which the fluid region is devided into sub-regions and then unknown coefficients of velocity potentials are determined from the continuity condition of mass and momentum flux of fluid at imaginary boundaries between sub-regions. The method originally suggested by Ijima et al.(1972) for the motion of submerged body has been modified to analyze the motion of floating body. The total fluid region has been divided into three sub-regions : the incident wave region, the transmitted wave region and the region below the floating breakwater. The restoring forces induced by mooring lines which were ignored by Ijima et al.(1972) have been modeled as linear springs with the initial tension effects. This method has been verified through the comparions with results from hydraulic expriments. Applications to various conditions of floating breakwater have been performed.

  • The characteristics of forced vibration with excited sinusoidal force was introduced. Also, numerical analyses and FRF in frequency domain were performed in detail. In this regard, the responses of displacement, velocity and acceleration were investigated in a forced vibration model. The FRF characteristics in real and imaginary part around natural frequency are also discussed. This response approach of forced vibration in time domain is used for the identification and monitoring of sinusoidal forced vibration. For acquiring a displacement, velocity and acceleration, a numerical technique of Runge-Kutta-Gill method was performed. For the FRF(frequency response function), These responses are used. Also, the FRF can represent the intrinsic characteristics of the forced vibration. These performed results and analysis are successful in each damped condition for the forced vibration model. After numerical analysis of the different mass, damping and stiffness, the forced vibration response characteristics with sinusoidal force was discriminated considering its amplitude and frequency simultaneously.

  • The characteristics of forced vibration by an external excitation force having a frequency were analyzed according to the amplitude and frequency of the excitation force. To obtain displacement, velocity, and acceleration, numerical analysis was performed to obtain the frequency response, and in particular, each FRF(Frequency Response Function) was analyzed to reveal the location of the system natural frequency and excitation frequency in the frequency domain. In the vibration model caused by external excitation, the natural frequency and distribution of the surrounding excitation mode in displacement, velocity and acceleration FRF. The FRF was also shown in the power spectrum and FRF of real and imaginary parts. The external excitation force was approximated with the excitation force of a sine wave by giving the amplitude and frequency, the mode generated by this excitation force could be distinguished. After numerical analysis by changing the equivalent mass, damping and stiffness, the forced vibration response characteristics by external excitation force were systematically analyzed.
