Three-Dimensional Analysis of the Mesophyll Plastids Using Ultra High Voltage Electron Microscopy (초고압전자현미경에 의한 엽육세포 색소체 미세구조의 3차원적 분석)

  • Image processing by ultra high voltage electron microscopy (UHVEM) and tomography has offered major contributions to research in the field of cellular ultrastructure. Furthermore, such advancements also have enabled the improved analysis of three-dimensional cellular structures in botany. In the present study. using UHVEM and tomography, we attempted to reconstruct the three-dimensional images of plastid inclusions that probably differentiate during photosynthesis. The foliar tissues were studied Primarily with the TEM and further examined with UHVEM. The spatial relationship between tubular elements and the thylakoidal membrane and/or starch grains within plastids mainly have been investigated in CAM-performing Sedum as well as in $C_4$ Salsola species. The inclusion bodies were found to occur only in early development in the former, while they were found only in mesophyll cells in the latter. The specimens were tilted every two degrees to obtain two-dimensional images with UHVEM and subsequently comparison has been made between the two types. Digital image processing was performed on the elements of the inclusion body using tilting, tomography, and IMOD program to generate and reconstruct three-dimensional images on the cellular level. In Sedum plastids, the inclusion bodies consisted of tubular elements exhibiting about 20 nm distance between elements. However, in Salsola, plastid inclusion bodies demonstrated quite different element structure, displaying pattern, and origin relative to those of the Sedum. The inclusion bodies had an integrative relationship with the starch grains in both species.

Sorghum Panicle Detection using YOLOv5 based on RGB Image Acquired by UAV System (무인기로 취득한 RGB 영상과 YOLOv5를 이용한 수수 이삭 탐지)

  • The purpose of this study is to detect the sorghum panicle using YOLOv5 based on RGB images acquired by a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system. The high-resolution images acquired using the RGB camera mounted in the UAV on September 2, 2022 were split into 512×512 size for YOLOv5 analysis. Sorghum panicles were labeled as bounding boxes in the split image. 2,000images of 512×512 size were divided at a ratio of 6:2:2 and used to train, validate, and test the YOLOv5 model, respectively. When learning with YOLOv5s, which has the fewest parameters among YOLOv5 models, sorghum panicles were detected with mAP@50=0.845. In YOLOv5m with more parameters, sorghum panicles could be detected with mAP@50=0.844. Although the performance of the two models is similar, YOLOv5s ( 4 hours 35 minutes) has a faster training time than YOLOv5m (5 hours 15 minutes). Therefore, in terms of time cost, developing the YOLOv5s model was considered more efficient for detecting sorghum panicles. As an important step in predicting sorghum yield, a technique for detecting sorghum panicles using high-resolution RGB images and the YOLOv5 model was presented.

Reference line-pair values of panoramic radiographs using an arch-form phantom stand to assess clinical image quality

  • Purpose: This study was performed to suggest reference line-pair values of panoramic images with clinically desirable qualities using an arch-form phantom stand. Materials and Methods: The line-pair test phantom was chosen. A real skull model was selected for setting the arch-form model of the phantom stand. The phantom stand had slits in four regions (incisor, premolar, molar, TMJ). Four raw images of the test phantom in each region and one raw image of the real skull were converted into 50 test phantom images and 50 skull phantom images with various line-pair values. 50 post-processed real skull phantom images were divided into 4 groups and were randomly submitted to 14 evaluators. Image quality was graded on a 4 point scale (1. good, 2. normal, 3. poor but interpretable, and 4. not interpretable). The reference line pair was determined as the first line-pair value scored less than 2 points. Result: The mean scores tended to decrease as the line-pair values increased. The reference line-pair values were 3.19 LP/mm in the incisor, 2.32 LP/mm in the premolar and TMJ, and 1.88 LP/mm in the molar region. Conclusion: Image quality evaluation methods and criteria should be able to assess various regions considering the characteristics of panoramic systems. This study suggested overall and regional reference line-pair values and established a set of standard values for them.

The Problem of 'Bio morphism' in the works of Elizabeth Murray (엘리자베스 머레이 작품에 나타난 '바이오 형상성'에 관한 문제)

  • `Bio morphism` are constituted in paintings where the artists try to embody the elementary properties of living creature as of growth and durability. They are the most appropriate concept of painting to harmonize human being with nature closely. The formative ways of them attach great importance to both unconsciousness and desire , as well as variations or dynamics, by noticing a flow of natural senses and feelings of human being. In other words, the formative ways are based on a recognition of nature as the intrinsic force of life, with the result that aesthetics of incompleteness is embodied in images. Therefore they are clearly distinguished from that of functional, geometric images. A tendency of painting at that time, in a word, 'return to figure and expression', means a conversion into organic images like the incomplete, atypical, and biomorphic forms, while denying the mechanical or geometric. Elizabeth Murray are analyzed, for these works are remarkable in the characteristics of 'Bio morphism'. Consequently the features of organic images, that is, 'the formative acceptance of natural figures, or an informality' and 'the force of free will, or an incompleteness', could obviously be revealed. It is a type that obtains a motif out of natural figures like an animal, a plant, or the concrete figures of human being. In conclusion, this thesis is focused on not only emphasizing that 'Bio morphism' were a major tendency among the various trends of postmodern painting in the 20th century, but also analysing both the painterly formation of organic images and the structure of them. In addition to these points, it is a central aim to evoke that Bio morphism should accurately be evaluated and positioned in postmodern painting. A new recognition of 'Bio morphism' is a peculiarity of the times that reflects a cultural aspect of the present, hence it should be recognized as another way to approach the postmodern painting.

Modern(摩登) Female Images in Shanghai by 1930s : Mainly Regarding to Visualized Printed Arts (1930년대 상해의 모던[摩登] 여성 이미지 - 시각화된 복제미술을 중심으로)

  • The term 'modern', in broader sense, refers to the concepts like modernity, modernization, modernism and the like, which came from Westernization impling the recognition of indigenous culture as being inferior to Western culture by comparison along with the expanded influences of the Empire of Japan. These concepts, however, rather than evolving from Western standards, came into being as a form of civilization led by Japan which had already tasted the fruits of modernization by 1920s. Since 1920s, the policy of, so-called, reconstructing Asian countries by Japan came to create eastern way of modernism, as a new East Asian trend mainly revealed in China which was against colonization after Japan's invasion and conquest of Manchuria. Therefore, Eastern' modern' unlike Western one could be understood in the widespread terminology, 'Modern(摩登)' in Shanghai, reflecting consciousness like 'Fashion' or 'Trend' in female images on a variety of visual media. By 1930s it was the most notable that 'modern' was accepted as something similar with 'Fashion', or 'Trend' in sociocultural contexts. These atmosphere had led commercial arts to enable to communicate with the public in a great deal of supports and success in Shanghai which was widely regarded as the citadel for the inflow of Western culture, among which transformations in female images were remarkable as a representative form of culture. It is also remarkable that 'historical modernity' transforming from the feudal age to modern society was considered a synchronic modernity, and nationalism was regarded as a sort of being modern, while involved in the newly-changed female images as a fashion mode. Changes in fashion including hair style in Shanghai by 1930s, as a way of expressions showing what was modern through commercial artistic productions, were easily noticed in visual media as an outlet of modern women's inner desire revealing their pursuit for new mode of life in metropolitan cities. As a characteristic of the time creating a new code of visual female images, it is notable that there existed another form of 'modern' satisfying socio-cultural needs of the general public seeking for being 'modern'.

Tomosynthesis Feasibility Study for Visualization of Interiors of Wood Columns Surrounded with Walls

  • The need for non-destructive testing and evaluation of Korean traditional wooden buildings is increasing because of their widespread deterioration. Among all types of deterioration, termite damage in wooden columns is the most difficult to detect with the naked eye because it starts inside the wood, and the initial deterioration is small. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is the best technology to investigate the inner state of wood that has less damage, but applying it to wooden columns between walls is challenging. Therefore, the feasibility of tomosynthesis, which is a method to reconstruct a coronal section of a subject with a few X-ray projections from a limited angle of rotation, was studied as an alternative to CT. Pine (P. densiflora) with three artificial holes was prepared as a specimen to evaluate the quality of reconstructed tomosynthesis images according to the different number of projections. The quality of the tomosynthesis images in the in-focus plane was evaluated using the contrast-to-noise ratios, while a vertical resolution between the images was assessed by determining the artificial spread function. The quality of the tomosynthesis image in the in-focus plane increased as the number of projections increased and then remained constant as the number of projections reached 21 or over. In the case of vertical resolution, there was no significant difference when 21 projections or more were used to reconstruct the images. A distinct difference between coronal section images was found when the distance was more than 10 mm from one plane to another plane.

  • This study aims to examine associationistic psychology and psychological operation associated with each color image, then to study the relation between particular colors used in paintings produced by Gogh and Klimt in different times and these painters' psychology in a bid to explore the meaning and role of psychological operation of colors. The findings of the study indicated that red and blue colors represent mainly negative images, while yellow and orange colors represent mainly positive images and psychologies. Specifically, in the case of Gogh, red expresses anxiety, a negative image, yellow symbolizes passion, a major positive image of emotional liberation, dark and thick green and the green involving blue symbolize negative images, emptiness and despair, and blue represents negative images of internal desire conflicts, and screaming. Also, purple used together with white represents anxiety and depression. In the case of Klimt, red represents negative images of anger toward mother and suppressed energy, yellow, an alternative to gold color, symbolizes the positive image of hope, passion, desire and eroticism, the arrangement of strong gold and orange colors represents a color of psychological healing more than a color of hope. As such, colors used in paintings produced by modern Western painters express the physiological conditions, psychological feeling and emotion in life, at the time when the artists produced such works. It was found that colors are yet another language of expressing emotions, and symbolize the psychologies of the artists, indicating that colors have something to do with the painters' experience and emotional impulses.

A Study on the Mimesis Type of the Costume in MMORPG Diablo 3 (MMORPG 디아블로 III 캐릭터 의상에 나타난 미메시스 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the specific mimesis types of common character costumes in MMORPGs, which have stories that are very similar in structure to ancient myths and fantasy novels. As the subject of the research I have selected "Diablo 3" created by the American video game developer, Blizzard Entertainment Images of 5 characters, for both genders - Barbarian, Witch Doctor, Monk, Demon hunter, Wizard - were compiled for a total of 10 images, and these images were compared to popular archetypes in mythology, religion and literature. analyzed them separately according to the mimesis type. For this study, Articles and books containing the Aesthetics, Mimesis and Digital culture were researched in order to study the costume features and the Mimesis types and compare them to the costumes in the MMORPG. Firstly, the character Barbarian is a successor of the barbarian character of the previous product. The outfit worn by the game figure is based on the common images expressed in the movie . The makers created an analogous-imitation mimesis by replicating the image in an exaggerated and grand form. Second, the character Witch Doctor derived its motif from the Voodoo cult, and was expressed in analogous-imitation mimesis, using the very shades and patterns used in real life. Third, the character Monk, blending the image of a priest in Eastern Europe and images of its oriental counterparts, was expressed in transposition-diversion mimesis. Fourth, the Demon Hunter took the source of its inspiration from the image of a Witch hunter in the medieval times. The game character has a sharper sleeker figure than its model, and uses more acute shapes and darker gloomier colors expressed in an analogous-imitation mimesis. Finally, the character Magician took a formless character and expressed it in transposition-diversion mimesis taking as its basis some fantasy novels.

  • The field of medical images has been digitalized as the development of computer and the digitalization of the medical instruments. As a result it causes a lot of problems such as an illegal copy related to medical images and property right of the medical images. Therefore, digital watermarking is used for discrimination whether the data are modified or not. It is also used to protect both the property right of medical images and the private life of many patients. The proposed theories, the Non-blind and the Blind method, have two problems. One is needed an original image and the other is using a gaussian watermarking. This paper proposes the new Blind Watermarking using binary images in order to easily recognize the results of watermark. This algorithm is described that an watermark of a binary image is wavelet-transformed, and then a transformed watermark is inserted in medium-band of frequency domains of original image by the Circular Input method. The propose method presented the good performance of over 0.97 in NC.

Image Classification Approach for Improving CBIR System Performance (콘텐트 기반의 이미지검색을 위한 분류기 접근방법)

  • Content-Based image retrieval is a method to search by image features such as local color, texture, and other image content information, which is different from conventional tag or labeled text-based searching. In real life data, the number of images having tags or labels is relatively small, so it is hard to search the relevant images with text-based approach. Existing image search method only based on image feature similarity has limited performance and does not ensure that the results are what the user expected. In this study, we propose and validate a machine learning based approach to improve the performance of the image search engine. We note that when users search relevant images with a query image, they would expect the retrieved images belong to the same category as that of the query. Image classification method is combined with the traditional image feature similarity method. The proposed method is extensively validated on a public PASCAL VOC dataset consisting of 11,530 images from 20 categories.
