  • In this study, we aimed to illustrate that the thresholding method gives different results when tested on the original and the refined histograms. We use the global thresholding method, the well-known image segmentation method for separating objects and background from the image, and the refined histogram is created by the neighborhood distinction metric. If the original histogram of an image has some large bins which occupy the most density of whole intensity distribution, it is a problem for global methods such as segmentation and contrast enhancement. We refined the histogram to overcome the big bin problem in which sub-bins are created from big bins based on distinction metric. We suggest the refined histogram for preprocessing of thresholding in order to reduce the big bin problem. In the test, we use Otsu and median-based thresholding techniques and experimental results prove that their results on the refined histograms are more effective compared with the original ones.

  • Multi-level thresholding is a method that is widely used in image segmentation. However most of the existing methods are not suited to be directly used in applicable fields and moreover expanded until a step of image segmentation. This paper proposes region-based multi-level thresholding as an image segmentation method. At first we classify pixels of each color channel to two clusters by using EWFCM(Entropy-based Weighted Fuzzy C-Means) algorithm that is an improved FCM algorithm with spatial information between pixels. To obtain better segmentation results, a reduction of clusters is then performed by a region-based reclassification step based on a similarity between regions existing in a cluster and the other clusters. The clusters are created using the classification information of pixels according to color channel. We finally perform a region merging by Bayesian algorithm based on Kullback-Leibler distance between a region and the neighboring regions as a post-processing method as many regions still exist in image. Experiments show that region-based multi-level thresholding is superior to cluster-, pixel-based multi-level thresholding, and the existing mettled. And much better segmentation results are obtained by the post-processing method.

  • In this paper, we present a new automatic thresholding algorithm based on maximum entropy of two-dimensional pixel histogram. While most of the previous algorithms select thresholds depending only on the histogram of gray level itself in the image, the presented algorithm considers 2D relational histogram of gray levels of two adjacent pixels in the image. Thus, the new algorithm tends to leave salient edge features on the image after thresholding. The experimental results show the good performance of the presented algorithm.

  • The basic idea of conventional thresholding is that an image consists of objects and their background where the gray levels of the objects are different from those of the background. In this paper, we extend it to one where an image consists of not only objects and the background but also their edges. Based on this extension, we propose an edge detection-based thresholding method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results tested on six well-known test images and compared with conventional methods.

  • This paper presents a multistage adaptive thresholding method and circular Hough transform for pupil detection. Multistage adaptive thresholding is a thresholding method that applies local image statistic within a neighborhood variable and the global thresholds. Therefore, the method can adopt the benefit of local thresholding and prevent an over segmentation at the same time because of the global image information. To detect a pupil, a circular Hough transform is applied to it in which the pupil pattern is considered as a circle shape. The experimental results show the reliability of our proposed method in detecting pupil properly.

  • Speckle noise reduction for power Doppler ventricle coherent image for restoration and enhancement using Fast Wavelet Transform with multi-thresholding and multi-filtering on the each subbands is presented. Fast Wavelet Transform divides into low frequency component image to high frequency component image to be multi-resolved. Speckle noise is located on high frequency component in multi-resolution image mainly. A Doppler ventricle image is transformed and inversed with separated threshold function and filtering from low to high resolved images for restoration to utilize visualization for ventricle diagnosis. The experimental result shows that the proposed method has better performance in comparison with the conventional method.

  • This paper presents a method for measuring tool wear parameters based on two dimensional image information. The tool wear images were obtained from an ITV camera with magnifying and lighting devices, and were analyzed using image processing techniques such as thresholding, noise filtering and boundary tracing. Thresholding was used to transform the captured gray scale image into a binary image for rapid sequential image processing. The threshold level was determined using a novel technique in which the brightness histograms of two concentric windows containing the tool wear image were compared. The use of noise filtering and boundary tracing to reduce the measuring errors was explored. Performance tests of the measurement precision and processing speed revealed that the direct method was highly effective in intermittent tool wear monitoring.

  • Tongue diagnosis is one of the most important diagnostic methods in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tongue image segmentation aims to extract the image object (i.e., tongue body), which plays a key role in the process of manufacturing an automated tongue diagnosis system. It is still challenging, because there exists the personal diversity in tongue appearances such as size, shape, and color. This paper proposes an innovative segmentation method that uses image thresholding, gray projection and active contour model (ACM). Specifically, an initial object region is first extracted by performing image thresholding in HSI (i.e., Hue Saturation Intensity) color space, and subsequent morphological operations. Then, a gray projection technique is used to determine the upper bound of the tongue body root for refining the initial object region. Finally, the contour of the refined object region is smoothed by ACM. Experimental results on a dataset composed of 100 color tongue images showed that the proposed method obtained more accurate segmentation results than other available state-of-the-art methods.

  • Thresholding has been used to reduce the number of gray values in images. Typically, a single threshold value has been used, resulting in two gray level images. Image reduction of one single threshold value, however, may lose too much of the high-frequency edge information. Thus, dynamic thresholding that uses a different threshold for each pixel is preferred instead of using a single threshold value. Dynamic thresholding can preserve high frequency details as well as reduce the size of images. Since it takes long time to perform existing software dynamic thresholding in an embedded system, this paper proposes and implements a circuit by using a FPGA in order to perform a real-time dynamic thresholding,. The proposed circuit consists of two counters, and threshold look-up table, and control unit. The values of two counters determine each pixel position, the threshold look-up table converts each pixel value into other value, and the control unit generates necessary control signals. On arriving from a camera to the proposed circuit, each pixel is compared with its threshold value and is converted into other gray value. An image processing system by using the proposed circuit will be implemented and some experiments will be performed.

  • Entropy used for measuring the richness in details of the image and absolute mean brightness error(AMBE) providing a change in the image global appearance are two quantitative measures generally used for measuring quality of images. In this paper, we propose an entropy and AMBE-based thresholding method to binalize a given image. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by thresholding experiments on nine test images and comparison with other conventional thresholding methods, that is, Otsu method and entropy-based method.
