Visual saliency detection is an essential task because it is an important part of various vision-based applications. There are many techniques for saliency detection in color images. However, the number of methods for saliency detection in infrared images is limited. In this paper, we introduce a simple approach for saliency detection in infrared images based on the thresholding technique. The input image is thresholded into several Boolean maps, and an initial saliency map is calculated as a weighted sum of the created Boolean maps. The initial map is further refined by using thresholding, morphology operation, and a Gaussian filter to produce the final, high-quality saliency map. The experiment showed that the proposed method has high performance when applied to real-life data.

Saliency detection in neurobiology is a vehement research during the last few years, several cognitive and interactive systems are designed to simulate saliency model (an attentional mechanism, which focuses on the worthiest part in the image). In this paper, a bottom up saliency detection model is proposed by taking into account the color and luminance frequency features of RGB, CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space of the image. We employ low-level features of image and apply band pass filter to estimate and highlight salient region. We compute the likelihood probability by applying Bayesian framework at pixels. Experiments on two publically available datasets (MSRA and SED2) show that our saliency model performs better as compared to the ten state of the art algorithms by achieving higher precision, better recall and F-Measure.
Image saliency detection is the basis of perceptual image processing, which is significant to subsequent image processing methods. Most saliency detection methods can detect only a single object with a high-contrast background, but they have no effect on the extraction of a salient object from images with complex low-contrast backgrounds. With the prior knowledge, this paper proposes a method for detecting salient objects by combining the boundary contrast map and the geodesics-like maps. This method can highlight the foreground uniformly and extract the salient objects efficiently in images with low-contrast backgrounds. The classical receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve, which compares the salient map with the ground truth map, does not reflect the human perception. An ROC curve with distance (distance receiver operating characteristic, DROC) is proposed in this paper, which takes the ROC curve closer to the human subjective perception. Experiments on three benchmark datasets and three low-contrast image datasets, with four evaluation methods including DROC, show that on comparing the eight state-of-the-art approaches, the proposed approach performs well.

The diffusion-based salient object detection methods have shown excellent detection results and more efficient computation in recent years. However, the current diffusion-based salient object detection methods still have disadvantage of detecting the object appearing at the image boundaries and different scales. To address the above mentioned issues, this paper proposes a multi-scale diffusion-based salient object detection algorithm with background and objectness seeds. In specific, the image is firstly over-segmented at several scales. Secondly, the background and objectness saliency of each superpixel is then calculated and fused in each scale. Thirdly, manifold ranking method is chosen to propagate the Bayessian fusion of background and objectness saliency to the whole image. Finally, the pixel-level saliency map is constructed by weighted summation of saliency values under different scales. We evaluate our salient object detection algorithm with other 24 state-of-the-art methods on four public benchmark datasets, i.e., ASD, SED1, SED2 and SOD. The results show that the proposed method performs favorably against 24 state-of-the-art salient object detection approaches in term of popular measures of PR curve and F-measure. And the visual comparison results also show that our method highlights the salient objects more effectively.
Visual saliency detection is an important part in various vision-based applications. There are a myriad of techniques for saliency detection in color images. The input image is thresholded into several Boolean maps, an initial saliency map is then calculated as a weighted sum of created Boolean maps. The initial map is further refined by using thresholding, morphology operation, and Gaussian filter to produce the final, high-quality saliency map. In order to improve the edge segmentation effect of the level set image segmentation and avoid the influence of the initial contour on the level set method, a saliency level set image segmentation model based on local Renyi entropy is proposed. Firstly, the saliency map of the original image is extracted by using saliency detection algorithm. And the outline of the saliency map can be used to initialize the level set. Secondly, the local energy and edge energy of the image are obtained by using local Renyi entropy and Canny operator respectively. At the same time, new adaptive weight coefficient and boundary indication function are constructed. Finally, the local binary fitting energy model (LBF) as an external energy term is introduced. In this paper, the contrast experiments are implemented in different image database. The robustness of the proposed model for segmentation of images with intensity inhomogeneity and complicated edges is verified.

In this paper, an unsupervised saliency guided change detection method using UAV and aerial imagery is proposed. Regions that are more different from other areas are salient, which make them more distinct. The existence of the substantial difference between two images makes saliency proper for guiding the change detection process. Change Vector Analysis (CVA), which has the capability of extracting of overall magnitude and direction of change from multi-spectral and temporal remote sensing data, is used for generating an initial difference image. Combined with an unsupervised CVA and the saliency, Principal Component Analysis(PCA), which is possible to implemented as the guide for change detection method, is proposed for UAV and aerial images. By implementing the saliency generation on the difference map extracted via the CVA, potentially changed areas obtained, and by thresholding the saliency map, most of the interest areas correctly extracted. Finally, the PCA method is implemented to extract features, and K-means clustering is applied to detect changed and unchanged map on the extracted areas. This proposed method is applied to the image sets over the flooded and typhoon-damaged area and is resulted in 95 percent better than the PCA approach compared with manually extracted ground truth for all the data sets. Finally, we compared our approach with the PCA K-means method to show the effectiveness of the method.
Nowadays, the saliency region detection has become a popular research topic because of its uses for many applications like object recognition and object segmentation. Some of recent methods apply color distinctiveness based on an analysis of statistics of color image derivatives in order to boosting color saliency can produce the good saliency maps. However, if the salient regions comprise more than half the pixels of the image or the background is complex, it may cause bad results. In this paper, we introduce the method to handle these problems by using maximum symmetric surround. The results show that our method outperforms the previous algorithms. We also show the segmentation results by using Otsu's method.
