  • In the pooling stage of a full reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) technique, the global perceived quality for any distorted image is usually measured from the quality of its local image patches. But all the image patches do not have equal contribution when estimating the overall visual quality since the degree of degradation on those patches depends on various considerations i.e., types of the patches, types of the distortions, distortion sensitivities of the patches, saliency score of the patches, etc. As a result, weighted pooling strategy comes into account and different weighting mechanisms are used by the existing FR-IQA methods. This paper performs a thorough analysis and proposes a novel weighting function by considering the luminance adaptation as well as the visual saliency effect to offer more appropriate local weights, which can be adopted in the existing FR-IQA frameworks to improve their prediction accuracy. The extended experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed weighting function.

  • Visual saliency detection is an important part in various vision-based applications. There are a myriad of techniques for saliency detection in color images. However, the number of methods for saliency detection in infrared images is inadequate. In this paper, we introduce a simple approach for pedestrian identification in infrared images using saliency. The input image is thresholded into several Boolean maps, an initial saliency map is then calculated as a weighted sum of created Boolean maps. The initial map is further refined by using thresholding, morphology operation, and Gaussian filter to produce the final, high-quality saliency map. The experiment showed that the proposed method produced high performance results when applied to real-life data.

  • Salient object attracts more and more attention from researchers due to its important role in many fields of multimedia processing like tracking, segmentation, adaptive compression, and content-base image retrieval. Usually, a saliency map is binarized into black and white map, which is considered as the binary mask of the salient object in the image. Still, the threshold is heuristically chosen or parametrically controlled. This paper suggests using the global optimal threshold to perform saliency map thresholding. This work also considers the usage of multi-level optimal thresholds and the local adaptive thresholds in the experiments. These experimental results show that using global optimal threshold method is better than parametric controlled or local adaptive threshold method.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that generates multi-view images by using various image features obtained from the given stereoscopic images. In the proposed algorithm, we first create an intensity gradient saliency map from the given stereo images. And then we calculate a block-based optical flow that represents the relative movement(disparity) of each block with certain size between left and right images. And we also obtain the disparities of feature points that are extracted by SIFT(scale-invariant We then create a disparity saliency map by combining these extracted disparity features. Disparity saliency map is refined through the occlusion detection and removal of false disparities. Thirdly, we extract straight line segments in order to minimize the distortion of straight lines during the image warping. Finally, we generate multi-view images by grid mesh-based image warping algorithm. Extracted image features are used as constraints during grid mesh-based image warping. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the conventional DIBR algorithm in terms of visual quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that constructs a saliency map in which important regions are accurately specified and the colors of the regions are less influenced by the similar surrounding colors. Our method utilizes LBP(Local Binary Pattern) histogram information to compare and analyze texture information of surrounding regions in order to reduce the effect of color information. We extract the saliency of stereoscopic images by integrating a 2D saliency map with depth information of stereoscopic images. We then measure the distance between two different sizes of the LBP histograms that are generated from pixels. The distance we measure is texture difference between the surrounding regions. We then assign a saliency value according to the distance in LBP histogram. To evaluate our experimental results, we measure the F-measure compared to ground-truth by thresholding a saliency map at 0.8. The average F-Measure is 0.65 and our experimental results show improved performance in comparison with existing other saliency map extraction methods.

  • The diffusion-based salient object detection methods have shown excellent detection results and more efficient computation in recent years. However, the current diffusion-based salient object detection methods still have disadvantage of detecting the object appearing at the image boundaries and different scales. To address the above mentioned issues, this paper proposes a multi-scale diffusion-based salient object detection algorithm with background and objectness seeds. In specific, the image is firstly over-segmented at several scales. Secondly, the background and objectness saliency of each superpixel is then calculated and fused in each scale. Thirdly, manifold ranking method is chosen to propagate the Bayessian fusion of background and objectness saliency to the whole image. Finally, the pixel-level saliency map is constructed by weighted summation of saliency values under different scales. We evaluate our salient object detection algorithm with other 24 state-of-the-art methods on four public benchmark datasets, i.e., ASD, SED1, SED2 and SOD. The results show that the proposed method performs favorably against 24 state-of-the-art salient object detection approaches in term of popular measures of PR curve and F-measure. And the visual comparison results also show that our method highlights the salient objects more effectively.

  • Recently, with the development of technology, computer vision research based on the human visual system has been actively conducted. Saliency maps have been used to highlight areas that are visually interesting within the image, but they can suffer from low performance due to external factors, such as an indistinct background or light source. In this study, existing color, brightness, and contrast feature maps are subjected to multiple shape and orientation filters and then connected to a fully connected layer to determine pixel intensities within the image based on location-based weights. The proposed method demonstrates better performance in separating the background from the area of interest in terms of color and brightness in the presence of external elements and noise. Location-based weight normalization is also effective in removing pixels with high intensity that are outside of the image or in non-interest regions. Our proposed method also demonstrates that multi-filter normalization can be processed faster using parallel processing.

  • In this paper, we propose a new salient region detection method in an image. The algorithm is based on the characteristics of human's bottom-up visual attention. Several features known to influence human visual attention like color, intensity and etc. are extracted from the each regions of an image. These features are then converted to importance values for each region using its local competition function and are combined to produce a saliency map, which represents the saliency at every location in the image by a scalar quantity, and guides the selection of attended locations, based on the spatial distribution of saliency region of the image in relation to its Perceptual importance. Results shown indicate that the calculated Saliency Maps correlate well with human perception of visually important regions.

  • As social multimedia sites are getting popular such as Flickr and Facebook, the amount of image information has been increasing very fast. So there have been many studies for accurate social image retrieval. Some of them were web image classification using semantic relations of image tags and BoVW(Bag of Visual Words). In this paper, we propose a method to detect salient region in images using GBVS(Graph Based Visual Saliency) model which can eliminate less important region like a background. First, We construct BoVW based on SIFT algorithm from the database of the preliminary retrieved images with semantically related tags. Second, detect salient region in test images using GBVS model. The result of image classification showed higher accuracy than the previous research. Therefore we expect that our method can classify a variety of images more accurately.
