This study was conducted to derive the site index of forest productivity of Robinia pseudoacacia (honey plant) to characterize suitable planting sites and to investigate the effect of the site environmental factors on the site index using the quantification theory I method. The data used in the analysis were growth factors (stand age, dominant height, etc.) of the 6th national forest resources survey and various site environmental factors of a forest soil map (1:5,000). The average site index value of the R. pseudoacacia stand in Korea was 14 (range, 8 to 18). The environmental factors affecting the site index were parent rock, climatic zone, soil texture, local topography, and altitude. The accuracy of the estimation model using quantification theory I was only 33%. However, the correlation between the site index and the site environmental factors was statistically significant at the 1% level. Results of quantification analysis between site index and site environmental factors revealed that metamorphic and igneous rocks received high grades as parent rocks, climate zones received higher grades than central temperate zone, clay loam and silt loam received high grades in soil texture, and hillside received a high grade in local topography. Analysis of the partial correlation between site topographical factors and forest productivity (site index) found that soil class and altitude were partially correlated to x by 0.4129 and 0.4023, respectively, indicating that these factors are the most influential variables.
In addition to anthropogenic origins, fluorine (F) is naturally enriched in rocks due to geological events, such as magma dissemination, hydrothermal alteration, mineralization, and fault activities. Generally, it has been well known that F is chiefly enriched in the region of igneous and metamorphic rocks, and biotite granite was mostly distributed in the study area. The F enrichment mechanism was not sufficiently elucidated in the previous studies, and the study on a fault zone was conducted to reveal it more precisely. The mineral composition of the fault zone was identical to that of the Eulwangsan biotite granite (EBG), but they were quantitatively different between the two areas. Compared with the EBG, the fault zone showed relatively higher contents of quartz and F-bearing minerals (fluorite, sericite) but lower contents of plagioclase and alkali feldspar. This difference was likely due to hydrothermal mineral alterations. The results of microscopic observations supported this, and the generation of F-bearing minerals by hydrothermal alterations was recognized in most samples. Accordingly, it might be interpreted that the mineralogical and petrological differences observed in the same-age biotite granite widely distributed in the Yongyudo was caused by the hydrothermal alterations due to small-scale geological events.
Asbestos minerals are found at rocks and soils of the Hongseong and Bibong serpentine mines, western part of Chungnam. The area consists of and metasediment, and Mesozoic igneous intrusives with minor age-known gneiss complexes and Mesozoic sediments. With detailed geological investigations, rock samples for the serpentinite and amphibolite areas are collected at sites containing asbestos. Representative asbestos and rock samples are analysed by PLM, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Serpentinites are found as steeply dipping faults with adjacent gneiss complex to the NNE direction. Repeated alteration, including serpenitization and talcification, is found at the emplacement direction for the serpentinite body. Amphibollites occur as intrusives and stratiforms within the Precambrian gneiss complex. Serpentinite and amphibolite (or amphibole schist) contain amphiboles either as asbestiform or non-asbestiform. Varying amounts of asbestos minerals, including chrysotile, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos, are found within the serpentinites. The asbestos minerals are found near the cracks or fractures and along the bedding plane. They occur as cross fiber, slip fiber and mass fiber types. Varying amounts of amphibole asbestos minerals, such as tremolite and actinolite asbestos, are found within amphibolites and as a mass fiber type. Overall results suggest that rocks of the serpentine mines contain serpentine and amphibole type asbestos minerals originated from the hydrothermal alteration. Considering construction nearby the mines and environmental risks by the asbestos, additional land management plans are required.

Poongjeon talc deposits is emplaced in dolomite and dolomitic limestone of the Cambro-Ordovician Samtaesan Formation. Ore in Poongjeon is low grade talc and the deposit has been known as the contact metasomatic or hydrothermal replacement type related to the intrusion of late Cretaceous granite in this area. X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, fluid inclusion and stable isotope analysis were utilized to examine the mineralogy of the ore and the origin of the ore fluid. The ore from Poongjeon mine mainly consists of talc and tremolite with minor amount of illite, vermiculite, smectite, and chlorite-vermiculite mixed layer. Occurrence of ore body indicates that the talc-tremolite ore was formed through the replacement by the $SiO_2$-rich hydrothermal fluid along the bedding and dike boundaries, or contact of amphibolite and basic dike with carbonate rocks. The temperature and pressure of the ore forming fluids at the time of the talc mineralization were estimated as $350^{\circ}C$ and 400 bar, respectively, based on the heating and freezing data of the fluid inclusions in quartz from talc-tremolite veins. During the talc-tremolite formation, fluids were divided into $CO_2$-enriched fluid and $CO_2$-poor fluid from $CO_2$ immiscibility (or effervescence). Oxygen isotope values (${\delta}^{18}O$) of the talc-tremolite fall within a range between 12.2 and 12.9‰. Hydrogen isotope values(${\delta}D$) of the ore range from -60 to -85‰ and $H_2O$ contents range from 2.0 to 3.4 wt.%. ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ values of talc ore indicate that the hydrothermal fluid involved in talc-tremolite formation was of igneous origin. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic exchange between talc ore and the surface water was negligible after talc-tremolite ore formation.
One-dimensional shear wave velocity structure of North Korea is constrained using short (2-sec) to long period (30-sec) Rayleigh waves generated from four seismic events in China. Rayleigh waves are well recorded at the five broadband seismic stations (BRD, SNU, CHNB, YKB, KSA) which are located near to the border between North and South Korea. Group velocities of fundamental-mode Rayleigh waves are estimated with the Multiple Filter Analysis and refined by using the Phase Matched Filter. Average group velocity dispersion curve ranging from 2.9 to 3.2 km/s, is inverted to constrain the shear wave velocity structures. Relatively low group velocity dispersion curves along the path between the events to BRD at period from 4 to 6 seconds may correspond to the sedimentary sequence of the West Korea Bay Basin (WKBB) in the Yellow Sea. The low velocity zone in deep layers (14-20 km) may be related to the deep sedimentary structure in Pyongnam basin. The fast shear wave velocity structure from the surface to the depth of 14 km is consistent with the existence of metamorphic rocks and igneous bodies in Nangrim massif and Pyongnam basin.
The study area is located in between Hacheonri and Weolgulri, Jecheon-gun where the formations of Okcheon group and Chosun group come in contact and the stratigraphy and geological age of the Okcheon group have been debated among previous workers. The dolomitic limestone which distributed at Cheongam and Dumusil is clarified as the Hyangsanri dolomite formation and the quartzite distributed at Cheongam and Howeunri as Taehyangsan quartzite formation. The newly named Soorumsan schist interbedded in the Great Limestone Series was previously classified Seochangri formation. It is also classified that the formation formerly named as Seochangri was divided into newly named Manji schist which seems to be correlated to Kemyeongsan and Munjuri formation. The formation formerly named as Buknori is clarified as Hwanggangri formation. The Samtaesan formation has been clarified as the lower and upper limestone beds which belong to the Great Limestone Series. The area divided into two groups, that is, Okcheon system of Pre-cambrian age occupies western part and the Great Limestone Series of Chosun system of Cambro-Ordovician age eastern part of this area. Okcheon system consists in ascending order of Manji schist, Hyangsanri dolomite, Taehyangsan quartzite, Munjuri schist, and Hwanggangri formation of meta-tillite. The Great Limestone Series of Chosun group consists in ascending order of lower limestone, Soorumsan schist, Hoosanri quartzite and upper limestone formations. Busan augen gneiss seems to be igneous origin. Unmetamorphosed shale interbed can be traced in the Soorumsan schist. Previous study (Kims, 1974) reveals that meta-volcanic rocks are distributed from south to north along contact zone of the Okcheon and Chosun groups, and it has been confirmed that the meta-volcanics crop out continuously from the adjacent southern quardrangle into the southern part of the area studied, intruding along the fault zone between the Okcheon and Chosun groups which seems to be upthrust as in the area south. This evidence coincides with Kims' work (1974) which states that the Precambrian Okcheon group is largely overturned and thrusted over the Chosun group.
Copper mineralization of the Donghwa and Hwanghagsan mines was deposited in hydrothermal quartz veins which filled fissures in Cretacous sedimentary rocks. Ore minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, bornite, galena, wittichenite and unidentified Cu-Bi-Pb-Sb-S mineral. On the basis of salinities and homogenization temperatures for fluid inclusions, the Donghwa deposit was deposited from $300^{\circ}C$ to $220^{\circ}C$ with 2.5 to 0.2 wt.% eq. NaCl, and the Hwanghagsan deposits was deposited from $300^{\circ}C$ to $160^{\circ}C$ with 4.0 to 0.0 wt.% eq. NaCl. Evidence of boiling suggests pressure of 170 to 60 bar, these pressures correspond to 1700 m to 600 m. The ${\delta}^{34}S_{H_2S}$ values of the Donghwa deposit (4.8~7.4%) are higher than those of the Hwanghagsan deposit (3.5~4.5%), sulfur isotope compositions indicate that ore fluids partially reacted with meteoric water and wall-rock. Equilibrium thermodynamic interpretation indicates that the temperature versus $fs_2$ of the Donghwa deposit (> $420^{\circ}C$, $10^{-3.2}atm$) is higher condition than that of the Hwanghagsan deposit (> $290^{\circ}C$, $10^{-7.0}atm$). K-Ar ages for biotite granite and quartz porphyry in the study area are 64.7 Ma, and 60.9 Ma, reapectively. Mineralization age using sericite in the Donghwa deposits is 59.8 Ma. Therfore, Copper mineralization in the study area was associated with acidic igneous activity such as biotite granite or quartz porphyry.

Ths study was carried out to understand the geo-topographical characteristics of the landslide area (1.5 ha) in Maeri, Sangdong-myeon, Gimhaesi, Gyeongsangnam-do. The bedrock of the landslide area was diollites and the area in and around the upper slope with the scattered talus was composed of Masanam originated from Igneous rocks. The landslide occurred in 19th of April, 2004 and the amount of rainfall for 3 days before the landslide was 74mm. The landslide by land creeping in this area was mainly attributed to geo-topographical characteristics such as well developed colluvial and/or weathered soils, and land cutting in lower slope, although the landslide could be affected by the rainfall. The type of the landslide can be classified into the land creeping by concave colluvial soils.
Southwestern contact zone of the Boeun granodiorite occurs near the thrust fault between the Ogcheon Group and Majeonri Limestone Formation. Ogcheon Group, metasediments composed of the Munjuri Formation, Changri Formation, and unconformably overlying Hwanggangri Formation, belongs to greenschist facies of regional metamorphism accompanied with deformation of two fold axes, $N10^{\circ}E$ and $N45-65^{\circ}E$ directions. Basic metamorphic rocks occurring in the Changri and Limestone Formations are the meta-basalts and meta-diabases of tholeiitic basalt series. The meta-basalts intruded in the Changri Formation as sills, whereas the meta-diabases in the Changri and Limestone Formations as stocks in appearance. They are considered to have emplaced before the formation of two fold axes and related with the thrust fault, based on the geologic setting of the area. The metamorphic facies are identified to be greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-basalt, and epidote-amphibolite facies for the meta-diabases. It is interpreted that such a variety of facies was related from the combination of earlier deuteric alteration and later regional metamorphism. The metasediments in southwestern contact zont of the Boeun granodiorite which is a product of later syntectonic intrusion of middle Jurassic in age, show pyroxene-hornfels facies near the contact and amphibole-horenfels facies away from the contact to the mineral zoning in the contact metamorphic aureole of the Limestone Formation, based on the paragenetic analysis of mineral assemblages. The Limestone in the area appears to be considerably $SiO_2-CaO-MgO-CO_2-H_2O$ can be adopted to evaluate equilibrium conditions of the mineral assemblages in each mineral zone. It is revealed that a temperature gradient was existed accross the contact aureole ranging from the higher igneous side to lower sedimentary side, whereas no clear trend of $XCO_2$ variation appears but high mole fraction. The tremolite diopside-quartz-calcite assemblages occurs in common through the most mineral zones of contact aureole that is in good agreement with the equivalent reaction curve which extends over a wide range of $T-XCO_2$ conditions.

NMC Moland mine, which is classified as a contact replacement or skarn deposit, has been interpreted to have been formed by Daebo igneous activity which intruded into the Joseon Supergroup, because it is quite closely located to Jecheon granite. However, an alternative interpretation was recently suggested that the mine could be related with the hydrothermal fluid originated from Cretaceous granitic rocks, bringing about skarnization and Mo mineralization. Here we present an interpretation on the source granite of the mine based on the gravity exploration: the gravity anomaly, unlike the surface geology, shows that the Muamsa granite could be the related granite of the mine, because its hidden subsurface structure is expected to be more widely extended to surrounding area of the mine and deeper than the Jecheon granite.
